A prime example is Facebook. Sites on the Internet may allow you to log in to the service with your Facebook credentials. This is useful as users do not have to register yet another account before they can use the service. It does however mean that users need to authorize those apps to use that data.

And with multiple popular services doing this, it may quickly become a control issue. It is not that sites like Facebook or Twitter are hiding the pages where apps that have been authorized in the past are listed, but it still requires the user to know that a page for managing app permission exists.

My Permissions is a free web service that offers two core features. It first links directly to the app permission management pages on eight social networking sites. Included by the service are Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Linkedin, Dropbox, Instragram and Flickr.

A click on a button opens the app settings control panel of the selected service in a new tab. You may be asked to log in first before you can manage app permissions. If you are already signed in, you can edit or remove app permissions right away. It usually takes a single click to remove an application from the list of connected apps.

You can naturally bookmark the links right away to open the app permission pages right away without having to visit the My Permissions page first.

The developers have created an ifttt recipe that reminds users once per month to check app permissions on social networking sites that they use.

If you are a heavy app and social networking user you may appreciate the service. Everyone else can still use it to check which apps have been authorized currently. (via <a

While it is possible to switch from timeline view to mentions or retweets, there are not a whole lot of other filtering options available. Want to filter for media tweets or replies? Then you have to use a third party Twitter software like Tweetfilter. The userscript is compatible with the majority of modern browsers and adds new filters and other customizations that are easily accessible and usable on the Twitter website.

Once installed it displays an always visible module at the lower right side on the Twitter website. The userscripts filtering options are displayed by default. Available are Twitters own filters plus filters for replies, links and media tweets. A click on one of the filtering options displays only those messages on the Twitter page.

<a

The system is very flexible and can be disabled or inverted at any time with a single mouse click.

Customizations are the second core feature that Tweetfilter offers. Here it is possible to configure a variety of settings that change Twitter features and what users see when they open their personal Twitter timeline.

This includes basic customizations like hiding advertising or invite friend suggestions but also more advanced features like automatically hiding the top bar, displaying alerts or hiding promoted content on Twitter.

A total of six tabs are available to configure Twitter features and modules like the timeline, dashboard or filters.

filter independently all retweets (including classic RT-format), media, replies, Tweets with links from timelines with tweets

custom filters for keywords, full-word (exact) match, username, mentions, hashtags, real name, source (via) with live updated match count

shortened link expansion

highlight Tweets mentioning you

customize timeline layout, add via information, new menu options

customize dashboard and aspects of the twitter.com layout gaining more space and remove distractions

show friend status in Tweets (who you follow, who follows you)

sound and message notification on new mentions and/or direct messages

<a

Especially the filtering options come in handy for users who receive a significant amount of messages every day.

Tweetfilter can be installed from the official userscript website. The script is compatible with Firefox 3.6+, Chrome 10+, Opera 11+, Safari 5+ and Internet Explorer 9+.

Twit Cleaner, Sort Out The Garbage Among Your Twitter Followers

Twitter

twit cleaner

twitter

twitter software

twitter tips
<guid

Trying to get a good solid message out every day now which links to an interesting news piece. Most of my messages do not link to Ghacks, but to technology news that I find interesting but cannot post about on Ghacks.

I just stumbled upon Twit Cleaner over at David Bradley’s blog on the Internet which analyses all the people that you follow on Twitter to sort out the garbage (their terminology).

The service uses OAuth for authorization so that you do not have to give them direct access to your Twitter account login. Your account is also automatically set to follow them, and they will follow you for reporting and support reasons. It is necessary to keep following them at least until the report has been generated. It is then up to you whether you want to unfollow them.

It took a few seconds to generate the report for my Twitter account, but that is probably due to the fact that I’m following less than 20 or so Twitter users. David mentioned that he had to wait about 20 minutes before all of the 2056 Twitter users he followed were scanned.

The program generates a nice summary in the end that sorts Twitter users into groups like “potentially dodgy behavior”, “no activity in over a month”, “all talk all the time” or “not so interesting”.

Below the summary is a list of all Twitter users that have been sorted into one of the groups. You can jump directly to a certain type of users.

The users are then displayed with their profile photo and name.

A click on the photo sends that user to the unfollow queue which is then processed in a natural manner.

It definitely pays to double-check the Twitter accounts that are identified by Twit Cleaner as “potentially garbage”. Depending on the number of users that you follow, this verification step may take some time.

Twit Cleaner’s approach is quite unique, and from what I can tell, works quite well. It does not really make sense to run the service if you only have a few dozens or so Twitter users that you follow, like I do. This changes once that counts reaches hundreds or thousands of users that you follow, as it is likely that at least some of them are not providing useful contents on Twitter.

Do you use Twitter?

Online Services

The Web

instant messaging

twitter

twitter tips
<guid

It is an absolute killer idea, but I am still astounded by the volume of traffic it has. I find it very useful for a number of things. It can automate some tasks, you can keep a personal log of things you’ve done, you can use itto manage yourself. I am also using it to communicate with my readers at my new blog, and it can be used really well for websites in general, as a way to keep in touch with readers even when they’re off-site.

However, I really, really don’t care what people are doing right now. The people who I do care about are very limited, I would follow about 3 Twitter users, even then I wouldn’t read all the tweets. Twitter can be cool if you find something funny or interesting on the net, you can send the link to your firends without needing to create an email. However, I really don’t care when someone gets up, when they brush their teeth.

Call me anti-social, but I just can’t see the “addicivity” behind all this. In fact, following a lot of people would clog up my twitter clients, so I would miss a lot of valuable stuff. I am not criticizing you guys who follow hundreds of people, I completely understand that we are different. Regardless, Twitter is an awesome idea and a well-implemented service. So do you like Twitter? What do you use it for?

<span

First you log into Flickr and navigate to the photo that you want to post if it is one of the photos from your account. It is also possible to simply navigate to a photo on Flickr and use that with the service. Then you copy the url of the photo and load the Twitter homepage. There you log into the account and paste the url of the photo into the status update form.

Flickr2Twitter (Flickr To Twitter) is an experimental Firefox add-on that get rids of the copying, pasting and manual opening of the Twitter homepage. It adds a button to every photo page on Flickr that makes it is possible to post the photo to Twitter. A click on the button will automatically load the Twitter homepage in a new tab in the Firefox web browser. If the user is already logged in it will automatically paste the url of the Flickr photo into the status update form leaving the last step of submitting the message to Twitter to the user.

Users who are not logged in will have to log in first before the process continues.

Twitter: Some love it while others would never even think of using the service that lets other people know what you are currently doing. Still it is widely popular and third party applications are beginning to be published that take advantage of this popularity.

Twitsig is one of those applications. It creates a dynamic image that is displaying your user icon and your last message in a signature image. This signature can be embedded into forums or blogs for instance where signatures are allowed.

The process is simple. Just enter the twitter user name and click on the Get Code button. Three different types of links are displayed once the code is generated. One direct link to the image which does not get updated, one html link to embed into websites and blogs and one in BBcode for forums.

<span
