With users from different social background and countries coming together, there is always the chance that you stumble upon text written in languages that you do not understand. Often your only option to make sense of the text is to use a machine translation service like Google Translate or Microsoft Translate.

Web browsers like Google Chrome offer built-in translation options, others offer add-ons like Quick Translator to add this functionality to the web browser.

But browser add-ons or features are limited to one browser, which may not be enough if you are also receiving emails, messages or documents in languages that you are not fluent in.

That’s where desktop translation clients come into play. QTranslate is a lightweight free translation software for the Windows operating system. The program supports six different translation engines: Google Translate, Microsoft Translate, Promt, SDL, Yahoo Babel Fish and Yandex.

QTranslate registers several global hotkeys that let you translate text from any open program window. The two most important hotkeys are Ctrl-q, which displays a translation of the highlighted text in a popup window, or Ctrl-Ctrl which sends the highlighted text to the program window where it is then translated.

Tests in the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email client, Google Mail and Microsoft Office were all successful.

QTranslate detects the original language the highlighted text is written in automatically. First time users need to make sure that the target language is set correctly in the main program window.

The keyboard shortcut Ctrl-e furthermore uses text to speech synthesis to read the text out loud. This only works if Google Translate or Microsoft Translate are selected as the translation engines.

Another interesting option is the ability to run a web search for selected text with the shortcut Ctrl-w. Web hits are displayed in a small popup window next to the highlighted text.

The program keeps track of all previous translations, which can be displayed in a history window with the shortcut Ctrl-H.

Verdict

QTranslate is a versatile translation software for the Windows operating system. Support for six translation services and hotkey driven translations are the program’s main selling points.

Translators wanted for Ghacks

ghacks

blog

translator

website
<guid

I'm therefor looking for translators that would like to translate my English articles. I'm especially looking for translators for the following languages: Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, German and French. Just let me know if you want to translate it into another language, I might be interested as well. /> This might not be a fortune at the beginning but it will steadily grow over time. I need translators that do it on a daily basis to translate everything that I write into the other language. You will need a Google Adsense account to start with or a paypal account. I could setup channels in Adsense if you are not allowed to create an Adsense account. I would transfer the money after Google made the payments for that month to your paypal account.

It is hard to predict how much you can earn with the translations. I think it is possible to earn about $5 per 1000 visitors which would go directly into your pockets. Remember that the articles stay and will drive visitors permanently to the site.

If you would like to apply for the job let me know and I reply asap to you. It would be nice if you could translate at least one article from my site as a sample of your work. Use the Contact link on the top to send me a message.

Update: Thanks for the incredible feedback that I received from you guys so far. I do not need translators for Spanish, Portuguese, French and German anymore. I’m still looking for Japanese and Chinese translators. Any other languages not mentioned yet could be fine to.

Translator Add-on for Firefox

Browsing

Firefox

add on

babelfish

language

mozilla

site

translate

translator

website

translator add-on for Mozilla Firefox. The add-on currently supports the following languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Arabic. You may not translate between all languages though, for example you may only translate from Simplified Chinese to English but not to other languages.

The add-on is configured to use Google Translation as the default Translation service. You may change this behavior if you prefer Yahoo Babelfish, PROMPT, Altavista, FreeTranslation or IM Translator. The add-on places an icon in the status bar. Right-Clicking that icon opens a menu with all the available translation options and a link to the preferences.

The add-on can be configured to translate the website in the current tab, a new window, a new tab or the sidebar. You may also select to add a quick translation option when the icon in the status bar is left clicked. You have to select the languages for quick translation by yourself.

The translator add-on is an excellent time saver if you have been using translation services before. Sure, you do not necessarily need the add-on to translate the websites. You could also do it manually by visiting the translation service and pasting the url to translate into the form field.
