Several torrent applications such as uTorrent provide access to a torrent search that originates in the client software. Most launch the search on a website in the default web browser instead of displaying the search results in their own interface. TorrentFetcher, a desktop Torrent search engine, offers torrent search capabilities right from its interface. Everything that is connected to the search is handled in the software program.

The user needs to enter a search term and can optionally select a category, change the number of results and the download directory for the torrents. The interface will then be populated by search results after a short time. It will list the title, seeders, peers, the size and date of each torrent that has been found during the search.

A double-click on any search result will automatically download that torrent to the directory specified in the header of the torrent search engine. It should be noted that TorrentFetcher will not download the contents the torrent is linking but only the torrent itself. This means that it has to be used in conjunction with a Bittorrent client such as uTorrent.

It works very well with torrent clients that automatically monitor a directory for torrents and begin downloading the files automatically after finding a new torrent file in that directory.

The software developer does not reveal the torrent search engine that is used to populate the results. An option to reveal that information and probably even exchange that torrent search engine with another one would come in really handy. The search in its current stage seems to be concentrating on English torrents. It would also be nice if the results could be sorted by clicking on a column so that the search results could be sorted by date for example.

TorrentFetcher is a handy software program to find torrents. Adding some of the previously mentioned features would increase its reach.

Update: Youtorrent 3 apparently stole the script from the website Nowtorrents, that’s at least what the search results at Youtorrent 3 are now claiming. This looks like a script protection put in place by the developers of the script.

I’m a bit puzzled by the sudden increase in torrent search engines that search on multiple Bittorrent websites at once. It seems like new ones are popping up every day and that others vanish again after just a few days of operation. I really liked Youtorrent before the developers changed it from a useful torrent search engine to one that did not find anything anymore.

It was blazingly fast, searched several of the biggest and most important torrent websites, provided filters and ways to sort the results by date, size, name and several other factors. <del datetime="2008-04-27T12:39:33+00:00">Youtorrent 3</del> feels like the same search engine. The interface looks similar and the speed is great. The search engine searches the databases of 13 torrent websites including Mininova, The Pirate Bay and Sumotorrent.

One feature that I really like is that every search result is categorized on top of the table so that the results can be filtered further to reduce the hits. The links lead directly to the download sites of the torrent search engine where the file can be downloaded.

I cannot guarantee that this torrent search engine will be there i a week or two but it does look solid enough that it could stand the test of time.

Torrent websites are much like Linux distributions, there are so many out there that it is easy to lose the track. Torrent search engines can be divided into two categories: Site search engines and meta search engines. Site search engines obviously only search the torrents that are hosted on one selected website while meta search engines crawl the databases of several torrent websites which often leads to better results.

The best way to search for torrents is therefor in my opinion to use meta search engines unless you are on a private tracker or prefer to use only one torrent search engine and no other.

Meta torrent search engines can only be effective if they are fast and update their database regularly, real time updates being the optimum. The selection of torrent websites that are crawled is the second criteria for a good torrent meta search engine.

1. Youtorrent

Youtorrent came to light only recently. It currently supports ten torrent websites with the option to add another six in the preferences. The search is pretty fast and the related search terms are aiding the user in his search. Offers a Firefox plugin.

2. Pizzatorrent

Pizzatorrent supports 15 Bittorrent websites right out of the box. The search seems just a tad faster than that of Youtorrent and they divide the results in categories which is great if you are searching for broad terms. Offers a Firefox and Internet Explorer plugin plus a Facebook application.

3. Torrent Finder

Torrent Finder is the most comprehensive Bittorrent search engine which crawls more than a hundred torrent sites during a search. It is slower than the other two engines mentioned already and does not list all results in one frame but separates each torrent site in their own frame which means that users will have to click through dozens of sites which makes a comparison difficulty.

4. Multitorrent

Multitorrent is not really a meta crawler. It provides access to the database of several torrent websites but it is only possible to search one at a time. It does offer category searches though which the other engines don’t.

I’m not a regular on torrent websites but I know that they all seem to have a similar layout. No eye candy, no Ajax, just simple searches and results. That’s fine with me but it feels like they are all missing some technology trends that emerged recently with Ajax for instance. Youtorrent is a torrent search engine that tries to be what Youtube is for videos and Youporn is for sex videos – the key player of the torrent search engines.

It searches in 12 torrent trackers and websites to find the best – and most – matches possible. It has a simple interface with no distractions, the search result pages are Ajax based which means you witness a nice effect when the search results pour in. The result pages use a clean interface as well displaying information like file name, size, seeders and peers plus the name and a link to the website that it found the torrent on.

A click on the link loads this website and you can download it from their interface. I was not able to spot advertisement yet on the Youtorrent website but it is only a few days old. Could be that they add advertisement later on but at the moment it is clean and fast as it can get.

The only criticism that I was able to come up with is the lack of boolean search parameters which will be added in an upcoming release according to the site owners. It would be really nice if you could download the torrents right from the Youtorrent website instead of having to load the original website first and download it from there. It is understandable however that the site owners of the original website would not like this that much.

Its rather easy to search the web for p2p f...

Its rather easy to search the web for p2p files without the need to register to one of the millions of bittorrent and emule sites out there. Before I start, I encourage no one to search for copyrighted files and download them, as everyone knows, there are other non-copyrighted files for both networks available.

To get started you will need a torrent client like Bitcomet and / or an Emule client

Torrent search

1. Google: The basic search would be to simply use the filetype:torrent string to find all indexed torrent files in the google cache. Unfortunatly this is no longer working, google needs at least one other keyword to display results. To achieve this you do the torrent search this way: “name you are looking for” filetype:torrent

2. Yahoo: Yahoo still lets you search for the filetype:torrent string without the need to an additional keyword. Of course, the results are to many to be specific so be advised to also use another keyword with the filetype command.

3. Msn: the filetype:torrent command is not working with Msn, until now I have not found out why that is the case. Maybe they restrict the filetypes you can search for to some common ones. That means torrent search is not working for msn this way.

Another possibility would be to restrict your search to one of the known torrent sites, I won´t name them in the article, because most of them have mostly copyrighted torrent links on their sites. The command to search a specific site would simply be site:url filetype:torrent keyword(s)

Emule / Edonkey files:

Thats a tricky one, you can´t search for filetypes because there are none, edonkey / emule uses its own protocol, which looks something like this ed2k:// aso.

What we will have to do is search for this string (ed2k) and we will find sites that use this in their websites. I recieved the best results with google but yahoo and msn should work as well, you probably will have to tweak your keywords a bit.

keyword(s) ed2k
