A new version of the popular email client Thunderbird has been released just a moment ago. Users can already download the new version from the official Thunderbird website or by using the built in update checker in the email client. The release notes have not been updated yet but the release itself is classified as a security release.

Thunderbird users should therefor make sure that they download and install the new version of the desktop email client as soon as possible. The download is available for all supported operating systems (Microsoft Windows, Linux and Apple OS)

The portable version of Thunderbird 2.0.22 has already been created by Caschy. It can be downloaded from his website directly.

Users who want to know about the changes before they update the client should check the release notes page frequently. It won’t be long until the page gets updated as well.

If you use both the online email client Gmail and the desktop email client Thunderbird you might like the idea of porting some of the features and shortcuts that Google has introduced to Gmail into Mozilla Thunderbird. Gmail UI does that. It does not port all of the features to the desktop email client but some of the most popular ones. The add-on for Thunderbird is compatible with all Thunderbird versions except the Thunderbird 3 branch but it is likely that it will be compatible once Thunderbird 3 is officially released.

One of the most interesting features is the archive function. Gmail UI adds the archive function of Gmail to Thunderbird. The user selects a folder name for the archive that can be used on account basis which would mean that the folder had to exist under every user account or one global archive folder which obviously only has to be selected once. The keyboard shortcut [Y] moves selected emails from the current folder directly into the archive folder.

That’s however not the only feature that has been ported over. It is possible to move messages up and down with the [J] and [K] keys, mark emails as junk with [Ctrl J] or focus on the quick search bar with [/]. Expressions are added to the quick search bar which mimics the search expressions in Gmail. Some basic examples would be to enter terms like from:paul, to:mike or f:bob t:dave s:help.

The email client Mozilla Thunderbird does not come with delete confirmations turned on by default. There is also no option in the Thunderbird settings to activate delete confirmations. The advanced config editor does list two entries that might be there to enable delete confirmations but there is zero information to be found on the Internet about those two settings. Even if those settings would enable delete confirmations they would do so for all emails and folders.

Delete Confirm is a Thunderbird extension that adds delete confirmations to the email client. It is possible to enable delete confirmations on a per folder basis in Thunderbird. The Trash and Send folder delete confirmations are enabled by default while they are turned off for all other folders.

A right-click on a folder and the selection of Properties will display a checkbox to enable or disable delete confirmations. The extension will display a popup if the user tries to delete an email that resides in a folder that has delete confirmations activated.

Delete Confirm is compatible with all Thunderbird 2 versions and can be downloaded right from the Mozilla website. The add-on is experimental which means that the user has to log into the Mozilla website before downloading the add-on.

The email client Mozilla Thunderbird comes with a few mail filters preinstalled that can be used to automatically process incoming emails. The actions that can be selected as a Thunderbird filter are limited to moving, copying, deleting, forwarding or tagging messages, adding stars, setting mail priorities, marking as read, setting the junk status or replying with templates. While the actions do include several of the most used filters they do lack some actions that are available in other mail clients.

The experimental Mozilla Thunderbird 3 add-on FiltaQuilla adds those additional actions to the Thunderbird Filter settings, in particular filters to launch a software program, append text to subjects, remove tags or stars, mark the email as replied or unread, copy the mail as read or disable notifications.

Probably the most interesting filter of this list is the filter to launch a file after receiving an email message that meets the requirements.

Each Thunderbird filter can be activated and deactivated in the options of the Thunderbird add-on. The mail filters can be selected in the Tools > Message Filters menu.

The Thunderbird add-on is unfortunately only compatible with Thunderbird 3 and not with the more widely used Thunderbird 2. Thunderbird 3 is currently available in Beta 1.

It felt like development for the email client Thunderbird came almost to an halt in the last twelve months. Yes, updates were released but most of them were security related. Thunderbird 3 Beta 1 is the first beta release of the upcoming version 3 of the email client. This version will introduce some long needed exciting features.

The beta release of the email client contains some of those new features already. Some of them are the long awaited improvements to IMAP for faster message viewing, improved email import from other email clients or the tab interface for emails.

The beta will install into a different directory in Windows and MAC OS X while the developers say that it may overwrite settings in Linux. They still recommend to backup the profile before installation to be on the safe side.

The release notes list several issues that are known in this release that might affect your system. You should check them out before installation to avoid complications.

A new version of the email client Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 is currently distributed to mirror sites to prepare for the official update announcement that is expected to be released later today. The only way to download the new version right now is to download the Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 release from the Mozilla ftp site.

The release is already available for all supported languages and operating systems. Neither the Check For Updates nor the official website reveal that a new version is about to be released.

This includes the release notes which still show the information about Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.17. The release notes usually get updated almost simultaneously with the updates going live.
