Many of these workers all took advantage of flexi-time to leave work early yesterday, apparently in protest at the wholesale move to Windows Phone.

Bloomberg reported that shares in the company fell 14% today, which is the largest drop for the company since last summer.

It’s not all bad news though, as the first concept image of a Nokia Windows Phone have leaked to Engadget, you can see it below. I think you’ll agree that if Nokia release handsets that look this good then the fortumes of both Nokia and Microsoft can be turned around.
Nokia has had mixed fortunes in recent years and its CEO was forced to admit they’d fallen years behind their rivals. While the company was working on a new smartphone OS, MeeGo, it could never have had it market-ready in time to get back in the race.

Nokia is still the world’s largest phone manufacturer and needs to maintain this position. So far uptake of Windows Phone has been lukewarm. This is due to a combination of factors that include smartphone fatigue, Android’s current dominance and a poor set of enterprise features. Nokia is the partner Microsoft need to make Windows Phone trendy. It looks very much from this image that Nokia will not be letting them down.

F-Secure Anti-Theft For Mobile

Google Android

Mobiles

Nokia

android

anti-theft for mobile

f-secure

symbian

windows mobile
<guid

Of course, their smartness is highly relative – like whether your last phone had a color display or not and whether the rock that was over you was volcanic in origin. There’s a lot happening still, so you better catch up now. Get over to the other side and get started.

<span

They have such a propensity to leakage that you would think multinational companies need someone to educate them about keeping a tight lid on things.

Or may be everyone wants free advertisement like Apple tends to generate with their high levels of secrecy.

The latest to be leaked is another Android phone from LG, called the GT540. We haven’t heard how well the last one is doing so far but it looks like they are already quite far ahead into the second one.

LG did say that a Snapdragon model was headed for Q2 2010 and that a non-QWERTY handset is also destined for 2010. With a screen size is 320×480, it can be any one of those. Which one do you think it is? [<a

They have put up a press release that details on what exactly the phone has inside it.

The PR highlights the fact that has a 16:9 ratio 3.5” screen that displays 640×360 display. Other than that, it is a quadband GSM/EDGE phone that also has GPS on it. You get a 3.5MP with auto-focus, flash, video capture, etc. Dell is probably going to launch it in Europe and the US only when they are confident that the phone will be able to hold out in front of the fast moving competition in those markets. Those hopes are now dashed. Based on the intel gathered by Phandroid, the radio bands on the X10 are the same as the ones on the iPhone.

QED – even though the X10 has a lot of bands listed on the website the US version will only work with the carrier who carries the iPhone. Say hello to the blue beachball all over again – AT&T. The iPhone is the iPhone, so being on AT&T has not stopped it from going viral. Will the X10 have something similar to help it sell? Only time will tell. [<a

Spotify has just been released for the Symbian S60 OS. In doing so, they are suddenly up from supporting only a handful of phone models to supporting a long list of phone models manufactured by different carriers. Most of them are by Nokia and others include Sony Ericsson and Samsung. [<a

Spotify has also officially surpassed last.fm in user polls – this after Last.fm was adamant about Spotify not being a competition for them. href="http://www.ghacks.net/tag/kurara/" target="_self">Kurara? That phone from Sony Ericsson That got leaked right after the XPERIA X10 came out from behind the veil? Well, we had it pegged down as an ordinary phone that is the stripped down, cheaper version of the Aino megaphone. Turns out that that is not the case at all. It is actually a pretty fast and snazzy little phone that holds the guts of a born performer.

I am referring to the fact that it is carrying an ARM Cortex A8 chip inside or so the rumor mills say. That chip is supported with a hefty Dose of RAM – whole 256MB of it. Then there is the PowerVR graphics processor – Kurara has one inside it.

All of this has been made possible by the machinations of one Mr. Eldar Murtazin, the one who runs the Mobile Review website. He promises greater details will follow soon. But his overall impression of the Symbian 80 OS on the Kurara is that it is extremely fast.

Well, if you intend to run a slightly older OS on a comparatively newer processor, you are likely to get good results.

Kurara was previously taken to be the little brother of the Sony Ericsson Aino, having a smaller camera size and over all slower components. But now it looks like the Kurara is poised to take over the higher end of the mid range section. If the UI is palatable and the phone runs without problems, a lot of people will snap it up as a budget phone because logically it shouldn’t be as expensive as the Aino or the XPERIA phones. Over all it is likely to be closer to traditional phones than the modern smartphones even though Symbian has third party apps and this is a full touchscreen phone. Whatever happens, we will be watching you Kurara. [post at Opera.com revealed the near release of Opera Mobile 9.7 for Windows Mobile touchscreen Devices. The new beta version of Opera Mobile will come with several interesting and important enhancements but unfortunately no Symbian support. Among the features are the new Presto 2.2 rendering engine that is passing the Acid 3 test with a score of 100/100 which seems to be a first for mobile web browsers. This is the same rendering engine that the preview version of Opera’s latest desktop web browser Opera 10 makes use of.

Opera Turbo has been added to the mobile web browser which is a compression technique that is routing Internet traffic through a server that is compressing the contents so that they can be delivered more rapidly to the user. The monthly bandwidth bill will also benefit from Opera Turbo as compressed data reduces the overall bandwidth consumption of the mobile device.

Other improvements in Opera Mobile 9.7 are the improved widget manager which runs independently from the web browser, Google Gears support and hardware acceleration with OpenGL ES support. Opera Mobile 9.7 Beta has not yet been released but it is expected to be released soon. Opera created a speed comparison video between Opera Mobile 9.7 with Opera Turbo enabled, Opera Mobile 9.7 without Opera Turbo and Microsoft IE Mobile.

<span

The giveaway is slowly reaching the end with another week to go before it closes its door for this year on December 24. Today’s application is the popular password manager, note taking and form filler RoboForm.

RoboForm is available for Microsoft Windows operating systems and can be installed directly, on a USB device or on mobile devices such as Windows Mobile, Symbian or Blackberry. The software integrates nicely with web browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer or AOL / MSN and displays a toolbar that provides access to all the application’s functions and there is also a System Tray icon providing the same.

The password manager will automatically catch data that is entered in password forms and provides the means to store those passwords in the application so that it can be used to automatically log into the website or service.

Information are stored in so called passcards which do not only contain information like the username or password but additional parameters like cookie length or emails. The information can be protected with a master password which is similar to the feature of the same name in Firefox. The data is therefor protected and save from prying eyes until the master password is provided.

Keyboard shortcuts speed up the process further by providing access to some of the functions and menus. The password manager is only one of the features of RoboForm. It will also aid the user during registration.

It is not a problem to use very long and secure passwords since all passwords are stored in the application. The password generator helps the user by generating a secure password for the website or service.

It provides options to select the length of the password, the allowed characters and the minimum amount of numbers. The password generator will also display the bit strength of the password to give the user an indication of the strength.

Passwords are only one type of information that have to be provided during registration. RoboForm makes use of so called identities that can be used to fill in the other information automatically as well. Identities are data sets that contain information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers and any other type of data the user likes to add.

These information can then be used to automatically fill a registration form which can be a huge time saver for users who regularly sign up for new services on the Internet. Different identities are available to distinguish different users or different environments such as work and home.

Another useful feature of RoboForm is the note taking module. It can be used to store notes securely on the computer. Notes can also be protected by the master password so that no one can access them without providing the master password first. Notes are simple text documents that contain information saved by the user.

RoboForm is an interesting application for users who spend a lot of time on the Internet. The Symbian operating system is used in many Nokia phones and one of the most used operating systems in mobile phones. The release of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android operating system have put some pressure on the world’s largest mobile phone maker to build an operating system that can compete on the same level.

It is therefor no coincidence that touch panel support was one of the major improvements in this release. Besides that the new Symbian OS will support higher screen resolutions and advanced sensor technologies. Nokia optimized the operating system for longer battery life and performance.

Nokia has done a lot to create a competitive operating system to compete with Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android plattform on the same level. The first new handset running on Symbian Os 9.4 was announced in the same webcast.

<span

The name implies that it will be a phone for entertainment and a direct competitor of Apple’s iPhone plattform.

Save Network Bandwidth

Software

The Web

http tunnel

https tunnel

java software

network bandwidth

save bandwidth

symbian

windows mobile

windows software
<guid

If they reach the limit they either have to pay for additional data transfers or live with reduced connection speeds which are both unpleasant side effects. Another possibility would be specialized services where the user has to pay for every data transfer right from the beginning.

The rise of mobile phones, netbooks and other mobile devices pushed the need for data compression tools that reduce the actual size of a data transfer.

Toonel (via Make Use Of) provides a solution both for desktop computer users as well as those that connect with a mobile device to the Internet. It features an impressive list of operating system it is compatible with including Windows, Linux, Macintosh, Windows Mobile and Symbian.

All versions basically function the same way. The traffic is routed through the Toonel servers which compress the communication with the user’s computer system. The user will have to set a proxy address in his favorite web browser or application so that the traffic will be compressed by the local client before it is being send to the Toonel server and from there to the destination address.

Toonel works with http, https, ftp connections and virtually any other form of TCP / IP connections. One interesting feature is to control the quality level of images which can greatly reduce the bandwidth needed to transfer the data. Users who want to save as much as possible might want to consider turning image browsing off in their application.

Free Apps and Games for your Symbian Phone

Mobiles

Software

application

download

Games

Nokia

symbian
<guid

Apparently Symbian is a total bitch to develop for so there isn’t a huge amount of apps like you can get for the iPhone.

There are some resources however, so I’ve put together this list of the best sites to find free (and commercial) applications and more:

Mosh

Nokia’s portal for free apps, games, audio and images. Accessible from your phone and computer. It has a pretty rubbish selection of applications, but if you’re looking for some semi-decent free games then Mosh has quite a few.

Symbian Freak

Symbian Freak provides news and downloads for Symbian phones. It actually has one of the best selections of freeware, some of the applications are even useful! If I had to recommend one resource is would be this.

Symbian Freeware

If you filter through all the crap you might find some decent downloads in here.

Nokia Beta Labs

Actually fair bit going on in here; a number of apps which are coming out of development are worth taking a look at.

Nokia Download!
Download! is another Nokia Portal for free and paid applications. There are few apps here, not a huge amount, hopefully Nokia has some plans to improve this aspect of their products.

My Symbian

Forums and download directory, fair bit here if you browse through.

Dot Sis

Hang out on these forums and you’re likely to find a whole lot of games and apps. If you can be bothered registering =P

Carbide

Carbide.ui is software to create user interfaces for your Symbian device. I was away for the last five days and had to make sure that I could react immediately when I would receive notice of an emergency. You need to know that I run a few scripts every minute that check if certain core modules are still running on my servers and that I receive an SMS instantly if they are not.

This helps if I’m near a PC but not if I’m playing with my five year old nephew at the North Sea. One of my backup plans included the installation of a Symbian version of Putty on my Nokie N73 mobile phone. Putty is a Telnet and SSH client that can be used to quickly connect to servers and start commands and scripts there. It would take only a minute or so to connect to the server and restart a module, like ftp, MySQL or Apache, if one of them crashes.

It can also be used to analyze what went wrong providing the server did not crash completely and does not restart. All that is needed is the free software PuTTY for Symbian OS which can be installed on a Symbian OS compatible mobile phones also known as S60 third edition smartphones.

Ports for UIQ 1, UIQ 2 and UIQ 3 are available as well. It’s actually pretty cumbersome to work with Putty on a mobile phone that does not have a full QWERTY keyboard with additional keys like ESC which is why the mobile version of Putty offers a special send menu that provides access to those special characters.

Publish Photos to Flickr from your Nokia Phone

Mobiles

Nokia

flickr

mobile phone

s60

symbian
<guid

A lot of Nokia N series mobile phones are supported and many have the Flickr application build in. Among the supported phones are the N73 editions, the N80, N93 and the N95.

You can load the specific website for each Nokia phone from this page, just click on the phone that you are using and a website will load with instructions on how to activate the feature. Two possibilities exist for each phone. If the application is already installed all you have to do is put in the username and password that is displayed on this webpage. Please note that they differ from your normal Flickr username and password.

If the service is not available yet you can download a configuration file which is offered on each phones website as well and install it on your mobile phone. Flickr will then be an option once the application has been installed on your mobile phone.

After that you can choose Web Upload to upload any picture on your phone to your Flickr account directly.

There is a special Nokia Help section in the FAQ on Flickr in case you run into troubles. I think that this is a great opportunity to publish pictures as soon as you take them.

Realtime Youtube Video transcoding for mobiles

Mobiles

Music and Video

Nokia

symbian

youtube

emTube just a day ago which was an application for Symbian S60 mobile phones like the Nokia N73 and Nokia N95 that made it possible to browse Youtube with the mobile phone and download + view movies as well. No conversion was needed and the quality of the service was astonishingly good.

Several websites, like the Download Squad, have been reviewing a service called ByWiFi today that converted videos from Youtube and Metacafe into 3gp format, a format widely used by mobile phones so that everyone with a phone supporting the standard would be able to view those movies as well.

ByWiFi has some advantages and disadvantages compared to emTube. The advantage is that the converted files are normally smaller than the ones that you download with emTube and that Metacafe is supported as well. The disadvantage is that the video has to be converted first and that the wait time depends on the capacities of the ByWiFi server.

You do get a link and can reload that link from time to time to check if the video is already available which means that you do not have to be online all the time which would not be a problem if you are on a unlimited data plan.

I do prefer emTube because of its speed and independence from third party services except Youtube of course. Users without a Symbian S60 mobile phone on the other hand will probably like ByWiFi.
