Subtitles on the other hand are helpful in many other cases. They are sometimes included on the DVD or rip so that it is possible to start watching right away.

A search in subtitles databases like Open Subtitles will often yield the desired subtitle. That’s fine if it remains a rare process.

Some developers have automated the process. Subtitle downloaders like Renaissance, Subtitle Search or Subs Grabber offer semi-automated processes that often can retrieve subtitles for multiple shows and videos at once.

Subtitles 1.0 adds a context menu entry to Windows Explorer to find subtitles for a selected video file. The program displays a large list of available languages to select from before it opens a web page with the search results.

Only the subtitles database of Subtitles.com.br is supported by the software. That, and the fact that it is not possible to remove unnecessary languages from the context menu are our biggest gripes.

Subtitles 1.0 is a comfortable program nevertheless, especially for users who need to find subtitles occasionally. Subtitle downloaders are the better option for if subtitles are needed regularly.

Kijio sports an easy to use interface that supports adding and editing primary and secondary subtitles of videos and movies. The user has the option to only load the movie and start the subtitle creation from scratch or load one or two subtitles into the program interface to edit them afterwards.

The subtitle editor displays a preview of the movie, a timeline and the current subtitle text on the screen. The mouse is used to pause the video playback, select parts in the timeline to add new text and to edit existing text.

The lower part of the interface contains additional fine tuning options to sync the subtitles with the movie.

One interesting option that is provided by Kijio is the ability to translate subtitles into different languages. It is possible to translate a complete subtitle file or only selected text.

While this is not as good as manual translating text it could be enough to enjoy the movie if time is of a matter.

Subtitles that have been created or edited can be saved as .srt or .sub files in the end.

Subtitle Search is another program for finding and download subtitles from the Internet. It supports several subtitle databases including the popular sites Open Subtitles and Subtitle Resource.

The main program basically works by entering a movie title or partial title into the search form in the program’s interface.

Subtitle Search will then perform searches on various supported websites to find the movie and corresponding subtitles.

The subtitle downloader usually populates the results listing quickly. Each result is listed with its title, language, number of CDs, rating and source.

Subtitle Search will also pull information about the movie from IMDB including its cover, votes, rating and link. All it takes to download a specific subtitle is to left-click it in the results. It is also possible to open the page it is hosted on by right-clicking the subtitle instead.

Users can also perform a search on IMDB right from the program’s interface which might come in handy if a movie title cannot be remembered.

There are two additional features that we would like to mention in this short review. The first is the ability to automatically download movie trailers if they are found on supported websites. The second to monitor the subtitle databases for subtitles that are currently not hosted there.

Subtitle Search is an Open source software program for the Windows operating system that can be downloaded directly from the project’s website at Sourcefoge.

The main feature that puts Renaissance apart from similar subtitles download programs is the fact that it can automatically scan for subtitles based on the name of the video files. All the user needs to do is to point the program to one folder on the hard drive. The program will automatically scan the specified folder for video files and display them in the program interface sorted by folder.

A click on the search button in the interface will initiate a search for subtitles that fit the file names. Those that are found are displayed with IDs next to the listed videos.

A checkbox is provided next to each subtitle that has been found. A click on the download button will initiate the subtitles download for all selected videos. The language of the subtitles can be changed from English to dozens of other languages.

Renaissance scans the Open Subtitles database and other subtitles databases that make use of the OSDB protocol. There is also an option to view IMDB information about a selected video if available by clicking on the IMDB tab in the program.

One thing that is missing is a manual search option in case no subtitles are located by the automatic search. Renaissance is available for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating system. It has been developed in Java which means that Java needs to be installed on the computer system for the program to run.

Easy Subtitle Converter is a portable software program for the Windows operating system that can turn five supported subtitle formats into 20 different subtitle formats. The input formats that are supported are MPL2, SubRipper, TMPlayer, MicroDVD and Dual.

The subtitle converter itself is easy to use. Subtitles can be added to the program with the Add Files button on top. It is possible to add multiple subtitles at once if they reside in the same directory.

The subtitle type will automatically be detected by the program. It is also necessary that the movie resides in the same directory so that the software can detect the movie’s fps rate. For this the movies need to be either in avi or mpeg format.

All that it takes afterwards is the selection of the output format. A click on the start button will initiate the subtitle conversion.

Easy Subtitle Converter can be downloaded from the developer’s website. It is compatible with most versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system including Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

There is also an option to analyze existing subtitles for problems like lines with to many characters, empty lines or overlapping times. But analyzing is not the only automatic option that Submagic offers. There is also a very extensive error fixing feature that can fix more than 20 common problems and errors of subtitles including the correction of ocr errors, removal of line separators or the fixing of quotes. Several fixes contain multiple choices that the user can chose from.

The Edit tab can be used to search subtitles, find and replace text and to insert, add, delete or split them. The final tab in the editing process is the synchronize tab which can be just to finetune the display of the lines in the movie.

All of this would not be helpful if there was not some kind of movie preview feature to test the subtitles. That’s possible in the Play Movie tab which also lists some of the commonly used functions mentioned earlier on in the article. It is for instance possible to insert or delete lines directly or to shift and stretch the lines to synchronize perfectly with the movie.

Another interesting option is the movie converter which can be used to convert movies from NTSC format to PAL and vice verse. The final tab contains general options that define how parameters like font sizes for the subtitles, the default screen format and several others like colors or directories on the computer system.

Submagic is a sophisticated well thought out application to work with subtitles. Beginners might feel a bit overwhelmed by the features and settings but it should not take more than a few minutes to get to know the subtitle editor. Impatient users might try their luck with one of the various subtitle downloaders like subtitle downloader, sub download or subtitle download instead.

SubDude has been designed to automatically rename subtitles to match the names of the movies. The software program comes with a graphical user interface which can be used to point it to a folder on the computer system. The subtitle renamer will automatically rename the subtitles to match the names of the videos. Regular expressions are used to match the videos and subtitles and the program usually does a very good job at finding the right matches.

It is furthermore possible to create an undo file in case something goes terribly wrong during the process. There are also two options to add the program to the context menu and send to shortcut in Windows.

SubDude is a portable software program that can be executed from wherever the files are unpacked to. It comes with a ini in the data folder that can be used to edit the regular expressions used to identify matching videos and subtitles.

All three subtitle databases will be searched and displayed in the interface. The top pane contains the titles of the movies while the lower pane will list the available subtitles for the different versions of the selected movie.

Subs Grabber integrates itself into the right-click Windows Explorer menu so that it can be used to right-click a movie and perform a search for it in the software.

The vast databases of the three services ensure that lots of subtitles can be found using the subtitles downloader.

Download Divx Subtitles is just one software that can be used to search for and download subtitles. It is using the database of the popular subtitle website GetSubtitle. The database contains subtitles for movies and television series in various formats such as srt or sub which are supported by various media players.

The search is probably the easiest way to search for subtitles as it reduces the hits tremendously. The search results can be filtered by language and format. The releases are listed by language, format, data and number of CDs. There is however no information about the total playing time which could mean that you have to test various subtitles before finding the right one.

The program is pretty easy to use but directs downloads directly to the website from where the subtitles can be downloaded. An alternative all in one solution is subtitle downloader which does all of this directly in its interface.

The main window provides two panes and a header toolbar. The left pane is a folder browser which an be used to point Subdownloader at a folder which is then automatically scanned for video files. The automatic identification takes place and movies that have been identified are displayed in the right pane with all known subtitles from the database.

By default all languages are shown but the header toolbar provides a way to filter by languages. If you are after English subtitles you can simply select that language and only English languages are shown. The subtitles can be selected and a click on the Download button which is also located in the main toolbar starts the download. That button is misplaced in my opinion, it would make more sense below the subtitle pane.

The subtitles are automatically downloaded in the same directory as the videos and most video players recognize them automatically.

Movies that have been identified are automatically pepped up with IMDB information like rating and a link to the page for further information. You also got a play button to automatically play the video with subtitles from within the interface if a movie player is configured in the program’s options.

There is also the possibility to search for and download subtitles instead of scanning video files. That’s pretty good if you don’t have the video files on the main computer.

Sublight is directly connected to the Subtitles On Net community which maintains a large database of subtitles. The program provides an easy to use search for subtitles and an option to pick a local video file and search for its subtitle. This has the additional benefit that both can be played in your favorite media player right away without having to move the subtitle into the right directory on your pc.

The subtitle search works flawlessly and it’s possible to change a few settings to decrease the time it takes to find the right subtitle to add. You can filter for languages for instance which obviously makes sense. It is furthermore possible to set a year, episode or season if that is known.

The results list is then showing the subtitles that were found for your search querry. If you have selected a local video you can simply double-click the subtitle to play the video with it. Not all applications can be used though, it was tested with the likes of Media Player Classic, BS Player and VLC but it should work just fine with additional ones.

Sublights provides a very convenient way to search for and add subtitles. The database is large enough to hold most popular movies in it.

The major disadvantage of subtitles so far has been accessibility in my opinion, at least when you take a look at watching movies on your computer. You have to know the websites and forums that provide users with subtitles and it’s more of a burden than fun to do that.

Sub Downloader [via Genbeta] could change that. This software scans various subtitle databases returning a list of subtitles for the selected movies. By default subtitles in all languages are returned which can be changed in the program’s options. If you only wanted to find and download English and French subtitles you could edit the settings accordingly.

The subtitles are automatically downloaded into the right directory. What I really like is the fact that you can dump the contents of a folder into Sub Downloader to search for subtitles for all videos at once. The tool can add two options to the right-click menu that search for subtitles when you click on that option. Again both single videos and complete folders can be submitted.

Sub Downloader is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

You can then pick a language from the available languages and subtitles are automatically shown if they do exist for the show. If you register an account with Subjoost you can add and request subtitles. There are not that many subtitles available currently but this will surely increase over the next days with all the news coverage the service is getting.

The good thing is that it is a community driven project which will surely mean that we are going to see more subtitles pretty soon. Take a look at the available subtitles on the website that displays all existing subtitles.

It would be a great service for his visitors if a Spanish webmaster would add Spanish subtitles to English videos that he found on Youtube for instance. The second is to create new content by adding the subtitles. This can be done in a humorous way, to add a comment or additional sources.

The interface of Overstream is easy to use. Users have to signup to be able to add subtitles to videos though. Once they are logged in they can use a url from a supported video portal to create a video with subtitles. The video is loaded into the interface and subtitles can be created by choosing a interval on the timeline. By default all subtitles remain for three seconds on screen which can be changed in the interface to suit your needs.

Basic video controls are available to test the subtitles. The user can stop, pause, forward, rewind and play videos. Videos can then be saved and are published on the Overstream website. Another nice feature ? You can load and save subtitles in the srt format.

The only downside at the moment is the lack of videos on the website. Roughly 900 are available which is probably the figure that gets added to Youtube each minute.

I’am not speaking about movie downloads here – although that would be a possible application as well – but about legal purchases of movies that have been created in Asia and Scandinavia. Many of those movies have no synchronization and English subtitles which would mean that I would not be able to enjoy the movie.

I usually search subtitle databases such as Open Subtitles for the title and download the English subtitle if available. Subtitles are available in numerous languages all added by a dedicated bunch that create them for free.

The database contains more than 285000 subtitles sometimes even more than one. A search for Fight Club for instance had 258 hits for various languages and versions.

A nice feature is that you may search for subtitles in a certain language which really reduces the hits for every search that you conduct.
