Many users refer to it as the gray bar as it may pop up for playlists, favorited and liked videos as well as for subscribed videos.

So what functionality do those bars add to the YouTube experience? The gray bar may appear if you click on a liked or subscribed video, showing other videos that you liked or from a channel that you are subscribed to.

The main annoyance here is that the bar cannot be disabled completely. The gray bar is linked to YouTube accounts, which means that users who are not logged in will not see the your subscriptions bar, my liked videos bar, my favorited videos bar or any other bar that YouTube may display at the bottom of the screen. Not logging in is therefor the most effective option to avoid the gray bar on YouTube.

The bars display direct links to other videos, navigational controls like loading the next or previous video of the playlist and auto-shuffle and auto-repeat options. You can futhermore hide the playlist which does not really hide it but changes the interface to a single line without video thumbnails.

Subscription Bar Remover For Youtube is a Chrome extension that is capable of hidding all gray bars on YouTube complete. It can hide the liked videos bar and the your subscriptions bar for instance which are the two most common gray bars shown on YouTube.

Just install the Chrome extension to get rid of those bars immediately.

Firefox users can install the userscript Removes Youtube’s Subscription Bar/Autoplay that offers the same functionality. Please note that you need to install an extension like Greasemonkey or Scriptish before you can install userscripts in the Firefox web browser. The userscript is working under Opera as well.

Have you seen the gray bar on YouTube before?

Sort Subscriptions Alphabetically in Google Reader

Online Services

The Web

google reader

netvibes

news feeds

rss

rss news feeds

subscriptions
<guid

I would say it is the best overall news reader that I tried so far but it is having a few quirks that annoy the hell out of me.

The first thing that I was frantically searching for was a way to sort the subscriptions alphabetically in Google Reader. After searching through all settings and various Internet search engines I came up with nothing. Yes, that’s right. There is no way to sort the subscriptions automatically in Google Reader.

The only thing that you can do is drag and drop them around so that they are listed in alphabetical order. Imagine doing that with 200+ RSS News Feeds. That would take a while. Most users probably import their first batch of RSS News Feeds using an OPML file which could be sorted alphabetically.

Every new entry to Google Reader on the other hand is added at the bottom after each folder and existing subscription which means it has to be manually dragged and dropped into the right location.

I was recently looking for one specific feed that I subscribed to and it took me almost a minute to locate it because the subscribed feeds could not be sorted properly.

Exporting and importing the RSS News Feeds does not help either unless they would be imported into an application that provides access to a “sort” function that can sort the feeds alphabetically. That would on the other hand be much work and something that had to be done regularly.

New free Magazine Subscriptions

Cool

Entertainment

ghacks

magazines

offers

subscriptions
<guid

There have been some great new additions since my last article that listed some of the interesting offers and I thought it would be time to write a new article on the subject.

You can access all magazines and whitepapers available for international users on this page and those for US citizens (which are far more) on this.

As I said earlier everything is free and there are no hidden subscription fees or automatic paid subscriptions of magazines after a trial period. Most magazines and white papers are delivered digitally to your inbox. If you find a great mag that should be mentioned here let me know and I add it.
