Last.fm is now offering playback of full length music tracks and entire albums on their online music community website for users from the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany with other countries to follow soon thereafter. Songs can be played for a maximum of three times before information about a soon to be coming subscription service pops up. Details about the subscription service which will will have options for unlimited playbacks are scarce at this point, it is only sure that it will cost more than the current subscription price of $2.50 monthly.

Artists get paid whenever a song is played by using revenue sharing, which means that they will be paid by a percentage of the advertising revenue based on the number of plays. Contracts with all four major labels made this improvement possible which could be a great step in the right direction.

A quick check revealed that the implementation has not been finalized yet but that you can access a lot of full length tracks already. Give it a day or two and everything will sort out. Users are a little bit confused for instance about existing playlists and embedded content.

I’m not a regular Last.fm user though and it would be nice if regular users could voice their opinion on the change.

Both iTunes and Winamp offer a way to share music with your friends although their implementation is rather limited. Apples iTunes software shares music only with users that are within the same network while Winamp Remote offers a way to listen to Winamp from a website.

Simplify Media tops both implementations by offering a way to stream music from iTunes or Winamp over the Internet that can be accessed using iTunes or Winamp. The real benefit besides being able to listen (sort and search) to your own music collection from a different computer is that your friends – better the friends that you invite – can also listen to the music on your computer.

Several limitations have been added to Simplify Media probably to please the Music Industry. The number of invites is limited as is the amount of users who can listen to your music at the same time. Users who are connected to your library cannot save or burn the music either. (unless they happen to use Grab++ or a similar tool)

By default only the folders that you picked during installation will be available for listening. All playlists that have music in those folders will be available as well.

Inviting friends could not be easier as well. Type in their username if they already have an account or their email address so that they receive an email with instructions on how to proceed.

I think it is interesting that it is possible to listen to songs that have been purchased in the iTunes store even if they have DRM protection as long as the user is signed in with his username and the other computer is authorized by the iTunes store as well.

A friend of mine was asking me if there was a quick and easy way to stream music over the Internet. I did some research for him and found the solution in the free software Vibe Streamer. This program makes it possible to stream music over Internet and Lan and comes equipped with all the features necessary to make it a great product.

It is first of all possible to stream – share would be a better word in my opinion – an unlimited amount of mp3 files and protect them by creating user groups and accounts that have permission to access the mp3 files. Another security measure is to protect the server with an IP whitelist which only allows access for IPs that are listed.

The computer running Vibe Streamer has to be connected to the Internet of course if others want to access the song collection. This is done by opening a connection to the IP address of the server in a web browser. Currently Internet Exlorer, Firefox and Opera are supported which means that everyone should be able to access the collection.
