Offering the biggest storage capacities of all the file hosts on the Internet will surely drive some traffic to a file hoster’s website. Oosah did just that with the announcement that they would offer 1 Terabyte – that is 1024 Gigabytes – to everyone signing up for their file hosting service. And while they surely have calculated with a mean storage usage instead of the maximum it would still be apparent that a free file host would have serious troubles coping with the demand.

The upload limits are 250 Megabytes for video files and 50 Megabytes for mp3 and images. The user guide is still speaking of a 2 Gigabyte limit per user which contradicts the information on the homepage of the service most likely because the user guide has not been updated with the new information.

The options offered by Oosah surely look nice. Besides the storage capacities the service offered Flickr, Youtube, Facebook and Picasa integration, an iPhone client, playlists, galleries, slideshows, public and private sharing and a easy to use web interface.

A new announcement on the homepage and on the blog seem to suggest that the developers did not expect the popularity of the service: Uploads have been disabled temporarily and Flickr integration disabled.

That problem is homemade on the other hand. The Internet has seen multiple services that made a huge announcement and could not live up to their promises because of the massive media coverage and exponential user increase.

The insight from the situation should be to make sure that the important data is backed up properly before rushing to new services.

I normally do not write about file hoster because most simply offer the same service using a different interface and website address. Drop.io on the other hand is pretty unique because of several features. Users do not have to signup to store (drop) their files at Drop.io and the only limitation is a maximum size of 100 Megabytes per drop.

A drop can contain several files as long as they do not exceed 100 Megabytes. If you want to store more create another drop. Each drop is accessible through a unique url which gets added after www.drop.io. The unique aspect is that users can select the name of the drop as long as the name of the drop has not been already used by another user.

Drops can be password protected which means that only users with the password can access the drop and its files. Drops get automatically deleted after a set period of time which can be defined by the user as well, the range is from 1 day to 1 year. It should be noted that the time can be prolonged by the creator of the drop.

The creator may also choose how other users can interact with the drop. The choices range from viewing only, over viewing and adding notes to viewing files, adding notes and files.

Another interesting aspect is that files can not only the added using the Dropio homepage but also by other means like email or mobile phone. Files can be send as an attachment to the email address dropname@drop.io and will be added if they do not exceed the maximum allowed file size.
