The software updater will perform an initial scan of the installed programs of the operating system and display them in a list afterwards. The software programs in the list can then be scanned for updates by clicking on the UpToDate button at the top. This will open a SSL connection to the server which will return information. These information are divided into programs that are up to date, programs for which an update is available and programs that are either unknown or unsupported.

Filters are available at the top which can display or hide these specific groups in the interface.

The program will only list programs with updates and unknown programs by default. A click on the plus sign in front of every listed application will open the available updates that are known for the program. Information, if available, about the update are listed in the left sidebar. This sidebar will always contain a link to the developer homepage from where the update can be downloaded.

The method is different from other programs that scan for software updates who usually link to one of their homepages and not the developer. Another difference is that it is not possible to initiate downloads from within the application. That’s a good thing as it makes it easier to check the update for validity before installing it. It is on the other hand less comfortable. It is possible to include beta and alpha releases in the update process.

A few minor problems became apparent after a while. Updates for Opera 10.00 included Opera 10.10 (which was fine) but also Opera 75 and Opera 85, two products that are not existing likely caused by reporting errors. This is not such a huge problem as the user will find out about the available versions on the Opera website.

The software also did list all but the latest patch for a game that was installed in the new version available listing which could be confusing to users who have the latest patch installed. It listed a few false positives (e.g. Winamp 5.56 updates like Winamp 5.552 which does not seem right) but those were just a few.

Most of the recognized updates were dead on and the amount of updates found was impressive as well. Software UpToDate is definitely an alternative to other software updaters like Sumo (see: Software Update Monitoring With SUMO), Radarsync (see: Radarsync checks for driver and application updates ) or Techtracker (see: Cnet Techtracker Checks For Software Updates ).

Outdated software programs will automatically be listed at the top of the list followed by all other programs that are currently up to date. Each entry in the table will list the version on the local computer system and the latest version of the software program. A download link is provided which will immediately initiate the download from the Cnet servers (in a new tab).

The only other options provided in this table are to configure email alerts which are unfortunately not explained anywhere on that page. It most likely will trigger email messages whenever the software gets updated. At least two false positive were detected by Cnet’s Techtracker. It identified the Firefox version as 3.5.2 where in fact it was already the latest 3.5.3 version of Firefox. A similar detection error was found in the Mozilla Thunderbird entry. It was listed as Thunderbird version 1.9.1.1 where in fact it was the latest Thunderbird 2.0.0.23.

A click on the more info link beneath each software title will display quick information about the software including editor and user ratings with links pointing to those reviews, the file size and download statistics.

Nothing that’s really necessary considering that the software is already installed on the system but still nice to have. It would have been better if the download size of each software was displayed more prominently in the table.

Cnet’s Techtracker is an interesting addition to the list of software updaters. It is backed by one of the largest software portals on the Internet which means that it can offer a good software detection rate. The forced registration and false positives are the two negative aspects of the program. While the developers can surely work on the latter the former will most likely not change in the near future. Users who want to give it a shot can download the software after logging into the website with their Cnet or Facebook account.

One could say it’s an software update tracker that tracks all the good free software of this world. The first week saw a nice start of the service although there has not been much coverage besides the initial three blog posts linked above. The RSS feed subscriber count is scratching at 1000 subscribers. The 50 Twitter followers would bring the total count above the 1k mark which is great for such a young service.

I have added the RSS feed to the sidebar here at Ghacks which will from now on display the five latest software updates that directly link to the software developer sites. If you have not already subscribed to the Appnews feed I suggest you do so as it will keep you up to date with software developments of great programs that have been covered at our sites.

We are still collecting ideas on how to proceed from here. Some suggestions are offering a widget for websites to include, a directory of programs that are monitored and the inclusion of additional websites that provide the same expertise and quality in their free software reviews.

Update Notifier is an alternative software updates checker which can be installed or run as a portable application. The program uses a clean interface that displays the installed version of scanned software programs, the latest known version in the database and a link to a website from where the application can be downloaded in case a newer version is available. The results were correct for all tested applications which is something that several of the previously tested software updater failed in.

A click on the download button will open the website of the software developer that contains information about the application. It takes another two clicks to start the download that is available directly from the same website. There is unfortunately no direct link to the website of the software developer itself to verify the findings or to download the software from there.

Update Notifier can be configured to filter the results list. Filters include the listing of only commercial or free software as well as listings based on the type of update available. The program can also be pointed at a folder on the local computer system containing portable applications to check those for updates as well.

Ketarin on the other hand does not keep the software on a specific computer system up to date. The difference is that Ketarin checks if a software installer has been updated on a specified location and downloads the new installer to a location defined by the user of the software.

The main purpose of the software is therefor similar to the concept of those automatic updaters but with the difference that it only downloads the new program versions so that they can be distributed to a network of computers. It can naturally be used to install the new version on the computer that Ketarin is running as well.

Ketarin can monitor software installers in three different ways.

• Monitoring URLs for changes
• Monitoring and using the FileHippo service
• Using placeholders to watch webpages for changes

The software developers have created a short documentation that gives examples for all three ways of monitoring software installers.

Applications that are monitored can be grouped into categories. There is also the possibility to run commands after downloading an updated software installer and to import or export applications to XML files.

The software program is Open Source and portable. Some would say it is not as it requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0.

It is therefor not easy to pick an application for the update of the week award but since I’m impressed by AIMP I decided to promote the music player a little bit more with the award. SUMO will scan the applications listed in the Windows Start Menu by default but the user can let it scan specific drives or folders on the system and add executables manually. Users will be surprised that SUMO will recognize most of the applications that are added manually. A test with MWSnap and Newsbin Pro was successful. SUMO recognized the two applications and was able to check their version in the database.

One interesting option is to include beta versions in the update notifications which can be enabled in the program’s settings. Including beta versions raised the update count from 6 to 26 applications. Some like an update of Firefox 3.03 to Firefox 3.1 would require some research while others are no brainers.

The interesting feature is to add executables manually to SUMO. Not all executables will be recognized though because some developers do not include version information in their files. That’s however not a problem of SUMO but of all software updater.

SUMO will display the applications that need an update including the new version that is available. A click on Get Update will load a website with download links to the latest version. There is no option to download the files directly from within Sumo. The advantage is that the websites contain usually between 2-5 locations that contain the latest version of the software.

Users can propose a link on the websites, perform a Google Search and Report Errors or Beta versions. The latest version and the version of the user is shown on the page as well.

SUMO is missing a few features that would make it an universal software. An option to download all software updates automatically would be more than welcome. As would be a feature to add links to software applications manually to the software. It is possible to add applications but if SUMO does not have them in their database there is no way to update them. The only option is to click the Get Update link and propose a link.

Some of the more remarkable updates are the first release candidate of Opera 9.6, itunes 8 and Orbit Download 2.75 but the update award goes to AIMP 2.5 this time.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.1.0 – I do not see a lot of reasons to install a Codec package unless you are really desperate. It’s so much easier to switch to a client that plays all formats out of the box.
