People use dozens of social news and bookmarking websites nowadays. All those sites offer toolbars and buttons for various browsers including Firefox, it’s just to much if you want to install all of them. Webmasters are looking for ways to submit their sites and articles to those sites with less effort.

Shareaholic is a Firefox extension that adds one button to Firefox that can be used to submit the current url to various social bookmarking and news websites like Digg, Delicious, Facebook and Stumbleupon. Users need to right-click their toolbar after installation and select customize from the menu.

A new window appears with buttons that can be added to the toolbars. Locate the Shareaholic button and drag and drop it into a place you are comfortable with. Once it is there it can be used.

The extension can be customized as well. You can add or remove sites. A total of 13 websites are available and seven are activated by default. So, if you would not use Tumblr you could remove that and add Twitter instead. Here is a list of all sites available:

Delicious
Digg
Facebook
Friendfeed
Google Bookmarks
Magnolia
Mixx
Reddit
Simpy
Stumbleupon
Truemors
Tumblr
Twitter

Pages can also be emailed using the Bzzster service. This requires a user account at that service though. Shareaholic has one more interesting feature that is worth noting, it’s called Community Links. This lists the latest links that Shareaholic users have submitted to the various websites. A nice way to discover new websites.

I have been using Digg, the social news portal where users vote on stories submitted by users, for more than two years and I loved it at the beginning. Nowadays when I visit the Technology section of Digg I see what I already read in my feed reader. There is Lifehacker, Mashable, Gizmodo, Torrentfreak and Arstechnica on the frontpage who seem to make the frontpage no matter what they write.

The news that I read yesterday are popular on Digg today which is a shame in my opinion. I’d love to see an experiment where one of the mentioned websites is posting a bull story that leads to a “Haha, fooled you” page on their website. My guess would be that it would still make the frontpage.

I also like the hypocrisy. When a blog hits the frontpage one of the first comments is a summary of what has been said or a link to the source of the article. As if the blog did nothing but to copy. Now, when Lifehacker, who have several two paragraph posts on their website is linking to a source writes an article like this it makes the frontpage and no one is posting the link to the real site in the comments.

Besides this it is possible to purchase any number of Diggs desired for a very low price. (25 Diggs $6 for example) which turns that website into spam hell. Sure, the guys who like to bury articles are working day and night to keep the competition from appearing on the Digg frontpage but they don’t stand a chance against articles that gets lots of votes fast.

Digg has become a useless site because of these reasons and I decided to delete the bookmark. Bye Bye Digg, it was a nice time.

How many bookmarking sites are out there on the web ? A few hundred for sure. They are a great way to increase backlinks to your blog and drive some traffic to it as well. Submitting your articles to those bookmarking sites however is a painfully slow process. Visiting those sites one by one, logging in, filling out the submission form takes some time and it pretty boring and repetitive.

A new service named social marker tries to step in and offer webmasters a solution that get rid of the repetitive typing. Once at their website you have the choice to submit your story to 32 social news and bookmarking websites with the option to check the ones that you would like to submit it to or to select profiles such as news, social, best, all and none of the sites.

The submission works like the following. You fill in the most relevant information about your article once at Socialmarker, those are Title, Tags, Excerpt and URL and hit submit afterwards. Socialmarker will load the first website of the list. You do need to login there of course but can choose that this login is saved for further sessions.

At the bottom of the screen is a short bar with the information that you entered before starting the process. You can drag and drop those details into the appropriate fields of the submission form at the various bookmarking sites. Sometimes those forms are already filled out.

The navigation at the top lets you load the next website in the list once the submission is finished at the current site. This takes some time because you will have to log into all those sites during the first submission round.

The second and all subsequent submissions however are more speedy because you do not have to log into the selected sites again. It takes about six minutes to submit the article to all bookmarking sites listed at Socialmarker.

This depends on your line speed of course and how fast your drag and drop skills are.

Socialmarker is great for webmasters who submit articles regularly to social bookmarking sites. The only drawback is that it only works in Firefox.
