GSN SMS Notifier is a free software program that can be used to send SMS messages if emails arrive in a specified account. The software application currently supports both POP3 email accounts and Gmail which can both be configured in the interface. The SMS messages will be send using either ICQ or Skype. Sending SMS messages over ICQ is free while the Skype alternative requires Skype credits that will be used to send sms messages.

The utility has to be configured before it can be used. It uses a few configuration screens to configure the SMS provider and cell phone, the email account, filtering rules for the emails and an SMS template.

The default values are to check every 15 minutes for new emails int he configured account. The username and password of the ICQ account have to be added to the software. If the user selects Skype as the SMS provider nothing has to be configured as those information are taken directly from the Skype client.

Labels can be selected if Gmail is chosen as the account type. Both Gmail and POP3 have to be configured with the username and password. Two rules can be defined to process incoming emails only during a specific timeframe and/or by using a sender whitelist.

The program has to be running in the background to be able to check the email account regularly and send sms messages out if new emails have arrived that are matching the rules.

GSN SMS Notifier runs on Windows XP or Windows Vista and requires the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0.

The Microsoft Outlook SMS Add-in adds SMS sending functionality to Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Outlook 2007. Before you begin to rejoice thinking of all the money that you can save you should notice that the add-in only works with a cell phone connected to the computer system. That is a bit of a turn off for many users but it might still appeal to some who prefer to use a real keyboard when writing SMS.

The process of sending SMS in Microsoft Outlook has been designed to resemble that of sending emails in the email client. This means that SMS can be saved as drafts and printed as well as send out to the recipient. The sent items are extended by a SMS subfolder that contains all the SMS messages that have been sent out from Microsoft Outlook.

The major advantage of the Microsoft Outlook SMS Add-in is the use of a computer keyboard to type the message. Other factors include the ability to copy and paste text, the use of proof reading tools in Outlook and to lookup and resolve phone numbers to existing Microsoft Outlook contacts.

The Microsoft Outlook SMS Add-in will be automatically available in its own toolbar after installation. It does have a few restrictions though, the most notable are that it can only send out normal SMS message, and that it cannot receive messages.

Phone Providers are making lots of cash from SMS, the Short Messaging Service. It’s interesting in my opinion that they charge that much for such a small data transfer. A new trend that they probably do not like that much is the addition of new technologies that create free or low cost connections to the Internet because those connections can be used to send text messages for free.

It’s just a matter of finding the right service that is compatible to the mobile phone. In the case of the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch the My Digital Life website posted a nice trick. Users can grab the AIM client for their clients and install it on the device. Then it’s merely a question of adding phone numbers as clients in iChat or any other instant messaging client on the phone. To be precise the account name will be the complete phone number of the contact including country and area codes. A valid phone number would be +123456789 for example. The + sign has to stand at the beginning.

Now start the AIM client software and send the new contact a message. He will receive it as an SMS. His reply on the other hand will land directly in the AIM client software.

The benefit of this method is obviously that it is completely free if the Internet connection is free. Do you know other ways to send free SMS with the iPhone, iPod Touch or other mobile devices ?

Why would someone pay for sending an SMS if he could send it for free on the Internet ? He should be sitting next to a computer of course but if the service is reliable there should not be a reason to pay for the SMS. Gizmo SMS can send SMS to 56 countries. Not all carriers are supported though and you should check their list of supported countries and carriers to find out if the carrier that you are sending the SMS to is supported.

The United States are leading the field with 30+ supported carriers followed by India, Russia, United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Germany. It’s a bit problematic that you have to know the carrier of the person that you want to send the SMS to but it usually is not a problem to find out by analysing part of the phone number. That does not fall into weight when you send a SMS to your own phone to test the service though.

I ran into a problem when I tried to send messages using Firefox, the verification image was not readable at all. A switch to Internet Explorer solved that problem. I’m not sure if it was caused by my version of Firefox or if it is a general problem.

Other than that it was fairly easy to use. After selecting the country and entering the phone number I was able to enter the text of the message which was limited to 80 characters unfortunately and the verification code. It took only a few seconds before I received the SMS on my Nokia N73 mobile phone. It contained the text that I had entered and some advertisement for another Gizmo service.

I don’t know how it is in the states but SMS are a phenomena in Europe. It’s a very easy foolproof way to send someone a short message without having to call that purpose. The limited space seems to have a huge impact on the language used while sending those messages with abbreviations that most adults cannot decipher anymore. If you are living in the United States or know a few people over there you might like the Google Send to Phone [via Tech Yard]extension for Firefox that lets you send free SMS to US numbers with Firefox.

The extension will add a cell phone icon after installation to the browser. If it does not appear automatically you need to customize the toolbar layout to drag and drop the icon into an appropriate place. A click on the cell phone icon opens a form where you enter the cell phone number, the carrier and the text that you want to send. Text that has been marked before clicking on the cell phone icon will be automatically entered as the message that will be send.

Not all US phone carriers are supported yet, only the largest are. You can email Google to ask them to include another US-based cell phone provider.

The service could also be used to send, more or less, anonymous SMS. It’s not completely anonymous because of server logs but there is no direct connection between the person who is sending the SMS and the phone number that appears on the recipients phone.

I have to admit, I’m not the cheapskate, I don’t try dodging costs and I don’t employ the technique described here, but it is a fairly easy way to get rid of SMS expenses once and for all. There are numerous ways to minimize mobile costs nowadays, I have a “family pack”, which means that if I buy more than one SIM card, I can call that card any time for free, it only costs about a flat $4 a month. Sadly, this doesn’t include SMS.

As we all know, Google Calendar has the option to send free SMS reminders of tasks. Now all you need is to set up a calendar for your significant other using your own phone as a reminder, and one for yourself, with his/her phone number. Set the default reminder to SMS, for 5 minutes before the event takes place

Now if you want to send her an SMS, just create an event, and write the text as the “What” text. Set the event about 10 minutes ahead to be safe, and save. Sadly only 60 characters will be shown in the SMS, but this is still enough for a quick message. You can create events 1 minute apart and have 3 events span a single SMS if you want. You will have a “reminder” sent to your partner, quickly and for free!

All that needs to be done is to enter the cell phone number, the cell phone provider, the date, time and of course the message. As of now 38 different cell phone providers are supported by Textmemos most operating in the United States and Canada with only a handful European ones.

The service itself is completely free and no advertisement will be send in any way to the cell phone number of the recipient. The system behind the service utilized the fact that many cell phone provider accept sms that are send by email which is exactly what Textmemos is doing.

New sms are processed every fifteen minutes and send out to the cell phone providers. All messages are send one hour in advance of the time detailed to avoid late delivery.

My cell phone provider is unfortunately not in the list but I have a friend who is using this service quite often. It works very well. This is nice if you forget birthdays often for instance or other important events.

Reducing the bandwidth costs of my mobile phone is one of my top priorities in this month. You might remember that I used my Nokia N73 as a modem to go online during my summer vacation which did cost me more than $400 for just a few hours of going online and writing articles. It was quite a shock that I was charged this much because I did ask O2 support how much it would cost me and they gave me a different answer at that time.

I decided to order a 200 Megabyte package for €10 after finding out about the bill which is enough to check for emails and write the occasional article. Bandwidth on the other hand is still a huge problem, just take a look at the size of some of the websites out there, they sometimes have a size of 100+ Kilobytes just for the homepage.

It is also possible to sign up for so called fair-use flatrates which give you a huge monthly quota (5000+ Megabytes for instance) but those are only available in selected countries at the moment. I’d like to share a few tricks that I use to reduce the traffic and the money that I have to pay monthly for using my mobile phone.

SMS: Use a free service like Cellity to reduce SMS costs. You pay a standard rate of €0.07 ($0.10) if the recipient is also using Cellity or €0.09 ($0.12) if he is not. Cellity is only available in selected countries in the moment but will soon go international. All you need to do is to download a small application and install it on your mobile phone to save costs.

Downloads: Reducing downloads from your mobile phone can make a huge difference at the end. Instead of downloading those ringtones, games and applications directly from your mobile phone you should consider the option to download them with your computer instead and transfer them to your mobile phone afterwards. You can save huge amounts of money this way if you download content regularly.

Another option would be if you have a mobile phone with Wi-Fi. Just connect to the Internet using a wireless connection from either your home or a public place and you will not have to pay for that bandwidth.

Using your mobile phone as a modem: The idea is to reduce bandwidth by removing unnecessary objects from Internet pages for instance. I decided to get rid of images and multimedia content completely. I did install a tool that checks my pop3 accounts displaying only the mail headers giving me the option to download only the mails that I want to read at that moment.

You should also make sure that automatic downloads and updates are disabled during that time.

Bargain for a better deal: Bargaining is a very effective method to gain a better deal or some bonuses. You could try to get a number of free sms per month from the provider if you either complain about their service or are in the position to renew the contract which is a powerful argument when dealing with your mobile phone company.

What’s your way of dealing with it ? Let me know if you have more tips that reduce the monthly mobile phone bill.
