What do users normally do if they want to research a phrase that they have read in a text, Word or Excel document, on a website or in a user agreement of a program that they are installing? The usual answer is that they copy the phrase, open their favorite web browser, load the a search engine and start the search for the phrase.

Search Selected makes the process easier by enabling a global hotkey that will automatically launch a search for the selected phrase. Global hotkey means that search can be launched from any application in Windows where text can be selected.

Search Selected runs silently in the background until the keyboard shortcut [CTRL Shift C] is activated. The tool will automatically launch a search for the selected search phrase in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. The only option that is offered by the program is a selection of search engines including Google Search, Bing or Yahoo Search.

The only aspect of the program that some users might not like is the fact that searches are opened in Internet Explorer with no option to change the web browser. This happens even if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser.

The background process is lightweight and uses less than 5 Megabytes of computer memory. Users who are interested in the software program can download it from the developer’s website.

I use Google out of habit and because I have always thought it is the best search engine. I’ve never objectively tried to compare major search engines and as a result I haven’t changed.

Blind Search allows you to compare the results of Google, Bing and Yahoo. You search for a term in it, and it brings up all 3 results side-by-side, but you are not told which site is which. You then say which you think is better, and the names are then revealed!

After using the site a dozen or so times, a clear image of what is the best search engine for you forms.

I was surprised that Google was only best for me in about a third of searches; I found Bing’s results much more relevant. (The creator of the site works for Microsoft though; although it isn’t affiliated to them!)

They also offer an OpenSearch plug-in (so it can be added to Firefox’s search bar, for example) and a plugin IE8. It also works for image search. Unfortunately, the site currently only works in US localisations, so one can’t use it to search google.co.uk etc.

Which search terms would make it on the list if you would have to compile a list of the ten most dangerous web search terms? Most users would probably add search terms like warez, cracks and sex when asked to compile a top ten list. A recent McAfee study on the other hand came to a completely different conclusion. The ten most dangerous web search terms are everyday search terms that cannot be connected easily with malicious intent. The top spot is occupied by searches for Screensavers, followed by free games, work from home and Rihanna with Barrack Obama, the iPhone and Taxes in the list as well. It should however be noted that the top 10 list is made up of categories and not single search terms.

These search terms are more dangerous than, lets say warez, because most users know that warez can lead to malicious software quite easily while they most likely do not suspect the same from these popular search terms.

The McAfee researches searched for more than 2600 popular keywords examining the first five pages of results across five popular search engines with McAfee’s Site Advisor technology. The top 50 most dangerous search terms in the US were listed in the research paper as well. The phrase “word unscrambler” is taking up the top spot followed by lyrics, myspace and free music downloads.

The researches discovered that lyrics and free made up the two most category-specific risks on the web these days. The research paper can be downloaded directly at McAfee.

A great way of testing a new search engine is to compare it to the dominant established search engine. BingAndGoogle offers a combined search interface that is more comfortable than working with two web browser windows or switching between tabs in the same window.

The search engine mashup displays a single search form on the main page. It will perform searches on both Bing and Google and display the results in two columns on the same page with the Microsoft Bing search engine on the left and the Google search engine on the right. This makes it easier to work with both search engines and compare results in the same window.

The service displays its search form on the top of the screen so that users can perform additional searches on both search engines right away. It is furthermore possible to use a search form in one of the columns to search in one search engine exclusively. The search for web browser that is shown in the image above shows that both search engines list Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome (Google Browser), Safari and Flock on the main page. Google links to the Maxthon web browser additionally while Microsoft to the defunct Netscape browser. Funny though that both are not linking to Internet Explorer on their first results page.

Both columns offer the full functionality offered by the search engine including image and video search. Bing And Google offers an easy to use mashup that delivers results from both Bing and Google making it extremely convenient to work with and compare both search engines.

Wordpress is already well optimized when it comes to SEO (that’s Search Engine Optimization). There are some basic changes that are usually performed like changing the link structure to include the title of the articles or displaying the title of the article in the web browser’s title. Most users stop here, some go ahead and install SEO plugins which do some magic in the background.

Advanced tips are not that easy to come by and most websites running a Wordpress blog do not have them implemented. This article will list some options that center around the nofollow tag. Nofollow basically tells search engines like Google to not count the link vote that is usually being passed when linking on the Internet. Why is that beneficial? A website has a certain linking power. Each link that is pointing to internal and external resources gets a piece of that linking power. Not all pages should be treated equally however which is what this article is about. It makes for example no sense to pass linking power to internal pages that you do not want to link for, think of privacy policies, contact pages, login, log off or social bookmarking links.

Wordpress themes come with a surprising amount of links, the majority of which is not set to nofollow. Here are a few areas where you should consider placing the nofollow link tag in a Wordpress blog:

The more (read more) tag. The page is already linked from the title of the post properly.

Wordpress meta data

Pages like Privacy Policies, Contact Us

Social Bookmarking links

To add the nofollow link one would simply add the rel="nofollow"
tag to the link structure which is not a problem if the link is displayed in the source code of the theme, for example:

<a href="http://www.example.com/" rel="nofollow">Example Link</a>

There are however links (like the previously mentioned more tag) that cannot be manipulated in the theme source as the link is created by a php function.

Here is how you make the more tag in Wordpress nofollow:

Open the file post-template.php in the wp-includes folder.

Locate the following line beginning with:

$output .= ‘ <a href="’. get_permalink()..

Replace it with:

$output .= ‘ <a href="’. get_permalink() . "#more-$id\" class=\"more-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">$more_link_text</a>";

You basically add the rel=\"nofollow\" tag to the line

Whether you are a novice or an intermediate user in the world of Photoshop, everyone can use tutorials. Even if a person is comfortable with the software, tutorials are a great way of introducing oneself to new styles and concepts and pretty much be amazed by what you can create with Photoshop.

If you’re looking for Photoshop tutorials, Vunky Search is the place to go to. This site labels itself as the ‘Fast and Furious Photoshop Tutorial Browser’ or in other words, a Photoshop search engine. Both in looks and function, Vunky Search resembles one of the many multi-torrent search engines out there.

When you look at the homepage, you notice the links to popular searches. Below that are some of the featured tutorials for the day. If you’re searching for something specific, type in a search term. If you’re browsing around, just ‘randomize’ or click on a link that interests you. The selected tutorial opens in its original site with no hassles.

Vunky Search currently indexes 88 tutorials but I expect this number to increase over time. Some of the tutorials are simply superb. One more thing I’d like to see is tutorials for more software like Paint and the GIMP. After all, not everyone uses Photoshop.

What do you think of Vunky Search? How do you think the site can be improved? What’s your favorite image tutorials site? Let me know in the comments.

Charity can be helped significantly through minor changes to what we done online; by changing search engines, buying through a portal or even simply installing a Firefox extension. This article will highlight several of these worldwide.

UK

In the UK, Everyclick is a website which provides an Ask-based search engine which donates much of its revenue to a charity of your choice (so the more you search, the more they donate) and also provides an online shop with links to most major retailers, with a commission being donated. Nearly any registered charity can sign up for this service.

ClickNow styles itself as ‘the community search engine’ and provides portals for over 200 of British charities. These portals also include an Ask-powered search engine, ’shopping malls’ (with commission going to charity) and a travel agency, where 5% of the cost of the holiday goes to charity. However, this site does not seem as good as Everyclick as each charity has its own distinct portal and the site’s design is not attractive.

US

Windows Live provides Americans with a search engine, Search and Give, which contributes to nearly any American charity or school, which the user desires. The site is very clean and simple compared to many charity search engines and is not plastered with advetisements. Windows Live Messenger’s ‘i’m’ initiative is another way, where if a certain emoticon is used in IMs, money will go to charity.

GoodSearch is another option for Americans, which seems to be very similar to Everyclick but is powered by Yahoo!. GoodSearch also provides an option to shop online ad let charities collect a commission.

Europe

VeoSearch is a charity search engine with a European focus, earning money for British, French, Belgian, German and Swiss charities, which are involved with social work, environment protection or sustainable economics. The search engine is available in French, German and English.

US, Europe and Japan

Effortless Good is a Firefox extension which donates a percentage of any purchases made on Amazon US, UK, Canada, France, Germany or Japan. This runs completely in the background!

Most of these tools take a cut for themselves, either for profit or for development, and this is worth investigating before using. Registration is also usually required, so it is known which charities are being supported.

When I want to view a particular video online, I usually try YouTube since that’s where I’m most likely to find what I’m looking for. However, there are times when the video is not available there and I have to search other sites like Dailymotion, Myspace, Aol, etc.

It can be very cumbersome to go to each video site, type in your search query, and then sort through the results. You can simplify the entire process by using MetaTube. MetaTube is a search engine for video-sharing sites and claims to search 100 of them all at once.

The home page has a simple interface, which looks just like a torrent multi-search engine. You type in your search query and you can also see a list of the recent searches made by other people. When you click the search button, the site searches through its catalogue of video-sharing sites. The screenshot of the home page below reveals just what videos people are looking for.

MetaTube searches major sites like YouTube, Google Video, AOL Uncut, Veoh, etc. as well as the more obscure sites like iKlipz, Jubii, Flixya, etc. By default, the first search results displayed are from YouTube. If you want to see results from other sites, click on the site of choice in the index on the left-hand side of the page.

I liked the site for the primary reason that it simplifies things. No more searching separately in each site for the video I’m looking for. Even if you’re not really into online videos, this is definitely a site worth bookmarking.

What do you think of MetaTube? Do you know of any other search engines for video-sharing sites? Let me know in the comments.

Searching is probably the one activity that every Internet user is doing on a daily basis. It does not really matter if it is a student doing research for his next essay, a housewife looking for new recipes, youngsters looking for the latest music videos on Youtube or the couple looking for a new health insurance.

Everyone is constantly searching for information and Firefox users are in the great position to be aided by hundreds of search extensions that make searching easier, comfortable and faster.

To much choice on the other hand puts some pressure back on the user who now has to pick the useful extensions and cast the other that are not helping him aside. That’s where this article comes into play. It lists the Firefox Search Extensions that you need to search the Internet professionally. They help you find the information you are looking for faster and efficiently.

The following list contains useful search plugins that can speed up the information finding process tremendously. No toolbar plugins have been included in the list.

General Search Plugins:

Add to Search Bar – Lots of websites provide search forms which can be used to search the contents of those sites. The Add To Search Bar plugin makes it possible to add those to the list of Firefox search engines so that the search can be conducted from the search function in Firefox.

Advanced URL Builder – Add custom searches to the Firefox right-click menu.

CacheIt! 1.0 – It happens sometimes that a website is not responding. It could be down or moving to another server. CacheIt provides access to cached versions of the page so that the information can be retrieved even if the original website is not responding.

Context Search – Only Google Search is available by default when highlighting a term in Firefox. This plugin adds additional search engine options to the menu so that the user can perform searches on Yahoo, Amazon or eBay.

Cooliris – Formerly Piclens. Provides 3D browsing for Image and Videos searches. Creates stunning effects.

CyberSearch – Supercharges the Firefox 3 Location Bar with search results that appear instantly. Perform searches in the location bar without having to open a search engine.

Dict – Look up Word definitions of highlighted words by right-clicking them and selecting the appropriate action.

Find In Tabs – Perform searches among multiple tabs. This works pretty well in conjuction with the MultiSearch plugin.

HighlightAll – Pressing Control F in Firefox opens a search form that allows the user to search on the active page. Highlight All highlights all occurrences of the search term on the page making it easier to find them.

Interclue – Find out what’s behind a search result before clicking the link.

MultiSearch – Ever wanted to search for multiple search terms at once? MultiSearch steps in and makes that possible. Just enter search terms and a comma delimiter to open search results for each of the terms in individual tabs. The terms Firefox, Mozilla, Thunderbird would open three tabs each displaying search results for one of the terms.

Search Keys 0.8.1 – Search Keys adds keyboard navigation to search results pages of Google, Yahoo and Delicious. Instead of clicking on a search term the user can press the assigned number on his keyboard to open the website. This makes it possible to perform a search and open results without using the mouse at all.

Searchbar Autosizer – Automatically resizes and clears the searchbar. Can also revert back to the default search engine. Useful add-on for minimalistic Firefox themes.

Surf Canyon – Search Engine Assistant – A search assistant that automatically recommends and ranks search results based on the users choice. It can pull data from search results pages that are currently not shown to the user.

Who Is This Person? – Highlight a name on a webpage and search for information about that person on sites like Wikipedia, Facebook and Google News.

Site Specific Search Plugins:

Bug.gd Error Search – Bug.gd is a user driven website that contains a huge database of errors and solutions. This search plugin adds the error search to Firefox.

Coogle – Highlights the search phrase on websites that have been discovered by searching on Google.com.

Customize Google – Removes unwanted information like ads from Google search results and adds additional useful information like search options on other search engines to it.

Delicious Bookmarks – Keeps the Bookmarks of Delicious and Firefox in sync.

GooglePreview – Adds thumbnail previews of the websites in the search results.

With all the new fangled torrent search engines available out there, it’s easy for new users to BitTorrent to get confused. After all, learning how the software works can be hard enough and then having to learn about its different search engines can be even more cumbersome.

Welcome to Speckly. The torrent search engine for the newbie BitTorrent user. The idea behind this search engine is to simplify the torrent experience over traditional torrent indexing sites. The home page is extremely bare-bones; just a search box and the site’s logo.

Using Speckly is as easy as it can get. The user types in a search term and is taken to a results page that looks just like a Google results page. Each result is categorized, has a list of seeders and leechers (displayed as full and partial sources), and the name of the indexing site. Speckly searches popular sites like MiniNova, isoHunt, Piratebay, LegitTorrents, SeedPeer, etc. It is also the only search engine I’ve seen so far that also searches Vuze. There are category links at the top of the page as well so you can click on the category which interests you.

Speckly is not perfect but it’s fast and effective. Results are pretty accurate and files with the most complete sources are listed first. The downside is that you cannot download the torrent directly. Clicking on a result will take you to the indexing site that has the torrent.

Although Speckly is targeted at the new user, people who are already familiar with BitTorrent can benefit from it as well. Personally, I won’t be using Speckly since I’m pretty happy with the search engines I’m currently using. What do you think of a search engine like Speckly? Do you find it easy to use? What other torrent search engines have you heard of? Let me know in the comments.

I recently stumbled upon a very beta Microsoft product called SearchTogether. It will be a collaboration platform in the form of an IE plugin that lets people work together when searching the web.

At first glance from the screenshots, it seems to me that it will be a chat-twitter mix, integrated with IE and Live messenger. I have doubts about the usability of this, since you can collaborate just as well using online messengers. You won’t get web search history, but would that really be necessary? I don’t know, it might turn out awesome, who knows.

The beta download will be available in Spring 2008, so possibly sometime soon, along with a probable revamp of the site a bit since it looks a bit shabby right now, I’m eagerly awaiting Microsoft’s next move against Google, sitting back, watching the fight and getting cool beta stuff along the way is so great!

There is a multitude of torrent search engines out there. Now and then a new one pops up and you head on over to check it out.

Pizzatorrent is the latest in a long line of torrent search engines. An initial glance at the site pulls up an interface much like popular search engine Youtorrent albeit in a different colour. Searching pulls up the same results as Youtorrent. But then that is to be expected since the two sites search the same torrent sites like PirateBay, IsoHunt, Mininova etc.

One difference with Pizzatorrent is that you can categorize search results. Therefore, torrents can be further segregated depending on the nature of the files they lead too. This is useful if you are looking for a file of a particular type such as software, video, etc.

I’d say Pizzatorrent is worth a lookup and the categorization of files is somewhat helpful. However, the site does not really offer anything radically different from other torrent search engines so I would not call this one special.

How did you like Pizzatorrent? Do you know of any other torrent search engines? Which one is your favorite? Let me know.

If you are from the United States and have been visiting another country lately or if you are from another country and want to access google.com you might have noticed that you are automatically getting redirected to a country code domain of Google. Users from France for instance are redirected to Google.fr automatically.

There are two easy ways to fix that, to select Google.com – or any other Google domain – as your main Google domain. If you are currently redirected to a Google country domain you can click on the “Go to Google.com” link below the search mask. The link is translated in the countries language. When you click that link you are redirected to Google.com and a cookie is set that will load Google.com for as long as the cookie is set.

The second possibility is to bookmark the Google Web HP website which gives users access to Google.com without redirecting them to their country domain. Please note that setting the language to English in the preferences does not mean that you are automatically taken to Google.com from then on.

Browsing some web 2.0 blogs, I came across a site that boasts a new kind of web search. I quite like the idea since online search is one of the least researched topics from a user experience point of view I think. Yes, Google is doing a lot and refining and tweaking and tuning, but very few are thinking innovatively.

Galaxy It tries to put new life into online searching by giving you a visualization tool for searching by topics, and other classical means. It is still very much in alpha stage, so don’t expect anything yet, but if the developers are thinking what I’m thinking, it could shape up to be something. Not a Google beater, but interesting nevertheless.

If you search for a term using organized mode, it will show you a 3×3 box, with your search term in the center and related topics around it. You can drag a topic to the center to then search for subtopics. I didn’t really get the usefulness, until I noticed the zoom bar to the left. If you drag it to the top, it will zoom out, and to each side of the big box, you will see a 3×3 ox again, with the subtopics in the center, and actual web pages around it. If you then drag a subtopic into the center, it will reload and search for all subtopics of that topic, and display related pages. I think this is something you might have to see for yourself.

Galaxy It also works with photos, which is an interesting implementation. The reason is that often, you don’t really know what you’re searching for. If you search for a main topic, and see photos categorized by subtopic, you may find what you need quicker.

I see two problems with the service. One is purely performance and much needed development. The service is slow, pictures don’t load in a great format and everything is a bit mixed up zoomed out. My second problem is contextual. If you search for “flower” pics, you presumably might want to look at pics of roses, or chrysanthemum or lilies and whatnot. Since the subtopics seem to be keyword based, the subtopics you actually have are “flower power”, “flower seeds” and so on. If they can fix this, and get the engine to display meaningful categories, they may have a great engine on their hands.

This site may not be beating Google anytime soon, but it’s bringing some much needed innovation to search engines. It needs a little development work, especially in the topic generation field, but I’m hoping they’ll be able to show us a great product soon, so keep your eyes open!

Wikia Search is the new project by Jimmy Wales who created Wikipedia. Instead of using an algorithmic approach it combines that approach with user feedback to provide everyone with better search results. The theory sounds nice, let users week out the spam and fake websites like Made for Adsense sites and websites with no content.

But, and this is a big but in my opinion, we will most likely see more and a different kind of manipulation that could have a huge impact on search results. That being said Wikia Search Alpha launched a few days ago and the interface looks clean and crisp. It’s fast as well and has some nice Ajax build in that adds to the usability of the search.

The search itself is not up to the point yet and one should not use Wikia Search just yet to research a topic. Ratings do not work yet as well but that is understandable if you consider the fact that it is the first public release. One difference to other search engines are so called Mini articles that will be shown in the search results.

They are basically mini Wikipedia articles that can be edited by all users and display information about the search term. I’m not quite sure how this is going to work out. I mean, if I want information about Microsoft I prefer to visit the official website, Wikipedia or other encyclopedias that hold the information.

There is also the social aspect. Every search results page displays “People matching” pictures and I’m not sure what I can make of this. I prefer a search engine to provide me with the best results. I don’t want to see other people searching for the terms or people who are related to those terms. I don’t want to read mini articles about the search that I perform unless that mini articles contains the BEST links to the places where I can get the answer that I’m looking for.

I do have troubles giving users more power over the system because it will be abused, you can be sure of that. The misuse will grow with the growing popularity of Wikia Search and the creators have to make sure that it will not get out of hand like the Stumbleupon, Digg, Propeller and to a lesser extent Wikipedia spam.

Having said that it is an alpha version that works. It’s not yet the best search engine there is but it is a beginning. It does look promising and I will return and see how Wikia Search progresses over time.

I’m not regularly buying or selling websites but I know the trends, can estimate the value of a website, its future potential and current and future market situation. The following is not really a trick but more of a tip on how to use information posted on website sales to your advantage.

Here are a few sites and forums that have categories for website sales: Digitalpoint, Namepros and Sitepoint. I’m sure you can find dozens more easily.

The first thing that you can do is to check on various markets. Which sites and topics sell well, which do not. If you have a blog or website compare the traffic level and revenue with your own. Check all the advertisers and try to get into their advertising program as well to earn more money with your website.

But that is not the main advice and tip of this article. Buyers post all sorts of information when selling websites. Traffic level, earnings, visitors, search engine rankings, advertising schemes, number of pages, how many users have signed up for the newsletter and much more.

And here is what you can do with that information. Check Google and other search engines for the main keywords, see if those keywords spill out lots of websites writing about the same topic. If you only find blog posts for example you might have hit a gold mine.

Instead of buying that website for several thousand Dollars you build a website around the main keywords and theme. The main benefits should be clear.

1. You know the main keywords and can research additional ones that bring in additional users
2. You know that there are not many competing websites and that you can get a top 10 position easily with some SEO (onsite and offsite)
3. You know which traffic levels and earnings you can expect from that website, even if it would only rank 2nd or 3rd on the main keywords
4.Instead of paying hundreds or thousands of Dollars you only pay for a domain name, some hours of your time and some basic SEO (links)

This leads to the Advice to the buyer of a website. There will be others who will try to get some piece of the cake by building a website that looks similar to yours. This means that it very well can be that your traffic levels and or revenue will drop if you do not continue to work on the website.

A website with strong keyword links is much safer than one that only has a dozens of links and still takes the top spot in Google because of zero competing websites.

That’s it. A quick post, all thought up and written in about 10 minutes. Opinions ?

Deleted websites is probably not the right catchy phrase that I should use. What I mean is that it happens sometimes that you find a search result in Google or follow a link from another website only to find out that nothing is found. Sometimes the information that has been could be essential. Fortunately for us there is a way to display the contents for most “The Page cannot be displayed” websites.

Even if the contents of a website get deleted they are still accessible through caches which means that we will most likely be able to get everything we need. Most major Search Engines use caches and store information of their crawlers in there. The crawlers report the contents of a website to the Search Engine who stores it in its cache.

Google, Yahoo, Live and Ask all offer a cached version of websites in their search results. Clicking on a cached link will display the content that was last reported by the crawler to the search engine.

Ask: (Click on Cached)

Google: (Click on Cached)

Live: (Click on Cached Page)

Yahoo: (Click on Cached)

There is another method that I would like to point you at that could work. The Coral Content Distribution network uses its own cache to display websites that are busy, unresponsive or down. To access this you add .nyud.net to the hostname. For ghacks it would mean that you would open the url www.ghacks.net.nyud.net.

Firefox has several search engines build in which the user can use to search the web. Those are the big search engines with an option to add several more when following a link to the Firefox homepage. The Open Search Fox plugin for Firefox makes it even easier to add search engines, or search boxes, on almost any website to Firefox.

A new option has been added to the right-click menu after installing the Firefox extension. Whenever you right-click on a search box you get the option to “Add OpenSearch plugin”. If you select this option you see a short form where you can edit the name and description of the search form which will afterwards be added as a search engine to the search engines in Firefox.

This is great if you would like to add the possibility to search your favorite websites in Firefox directly. You may swap positions of the search engines by clicking on Manage Search Engines.

Mozilla Firefox comes preinstalled with seven search engines which are Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Answers, Creative Commons, Ebay and Furl. Those are probably not the best selections, most probably missed that there are more search engines than Google preinstalled. Adding new search engines that might prove more useful can be easily added by going to the mozilla search engine page.

Take a guess how many search engines or specialized sites can be added to firefox. The answer is more than 8000 ! All search engines are categorized for easier access. Categories include Computer, Games, Reference, Dictionaries and Arts & Media. You can also access the top 10 searches on that site for popular search engines.

The question is of course, which should you add ? I can´t answer that question for you but can name some that could be worth to add to your search engine list: Del.icio.us, ESPN, IMDB, MSN, Technorati, Wikipedia. Many are not english search engines but in different languages like German, Swedish and dutch.

I´ve written a short article on how search engines work in 2002 and thought it would be a good idea to present it to you as well. The information it contains are still valid so take your time and read through this article and post your comments and questions in the usual place :)

1. Search engine structur

A search engine consists of eight interweaved elements, those are.

Url Server, Crawler, Parser, Store Server, Lexicon, Hit List, Repository, Searchers

The Url Server manages a list that contains unverified urls, new urls are added to the Url Server in different ways, for example by using a form on the search engines website. Another possibility that new urls are added is that a visited url contains links to new urls that are not verified. Each url gets a so called docID, which is easier to archive than the full url.

The Crawler gets unverified urls from the Url Server and changes the url into ip adresses using DNS. As soon as the ip adress is available it opens a http connection to the ip, if this is successful it starts a GET command to recieve the page content (source). The page content is then transfered to the Storeserver that compresses the content.
The Parser decompresses the sources he gets from the Storeserver. After that the source is analysed in the following way. First it searches for words that are not in his Lexicon, if he finds a new word it is added to the Lexicon. Words that already exist in the Lexicon are added to the hitlist with a remark on how often it occurs in the source. Additionaly information like the title, part of the text or the whole text are saved in the Repository.
The Lexicon contains all words that the parser found in all urls processed, each word has a pointer to the hit list of that word.
The Hit List has pointers to the Repository. This makes it possible for the search engine to present results pretty fast. All information about the site that is stored in the repository is presented in the search result window. (normally title, url and the first line(s) of the page)
The Searcher is the link between the user and the search engine. Users enter search phrases in the searcher, hit enter and the searcher uses the Lexicon and the Hit List to present results.

Example:
———-

User types http://www.google.com/ into his webbrowser, then enters the search phrase “security website” into the search field. (which is the Searcher component)
The Searcher uses the Lexicon to check the pointers of the two words (the pointers are connected to the Hit List), follows the pointers to the Hit List, checks the first 10 entries in the Hit List, follows the pointer to the Repository and creates a new webpage containing the first 10 entries of the hitlist, the title and some lines of the pages from the Repository

The most important element of a search engine is its rating system. Search engines measure urls to determine which results to display first when a user starts a search. I´ve choosen Google as the representative search engine due to the fact that search engines measure differently.

Google awards points to every url, the more points a url got the higher the rank in the Hit list. important elements that add points are the url itself, the title, the keywords, the content, headings aso. Additionally urls get points for every link that links to them from other urls. Links from urls that have a high rating themselve give more points than links from urls with low ratings.

2. Advanced search methods:

Search Engines use Boolean operators for advanced searches. The operators AND, OR and NOT are used by every known search engine.

word1 AND word2 means that the search engine looks for urls that contain word1 and word2, urls with only one of the words are not displayed in the results

word1 OR word2 means that the search engine displays all urls tha contain word1 or word2 or word1 and word1.

word1 NOT word2 means that the search engine looks for pages that contain word1 and NOT word2

Examples: (google)
———————-
“Clinton President” – displays results with urls that contain Clinton and President but not where one of them is missing
“Clinton AND President” – same result as obove
“Clinton +President” – same result as above
“Clinton OR President” – displays results with urls that contain either Clinton or President or both
“Clinton NOT President” – displays results with urls that contain Clinton but NOT President
“Clinton -President” – same results as above

Google uses additional features, those are explained below.

“allintitle” – (allintitle:deny security), displays urls that contain the terms in their title
