These programs range from basic applications to sophisticated tools that offer editors and other features that make life a lot easier.

Screenshot Captor is one of those Swiss army knifes in the screenshot taking world. The program supports all the capturing options that users expect, from capturing the whole workspace to individual windows, free form rectangles or scrolling windows. All modes are selectable from within the program interface, or by keyboard shortcut. New users find all shortcuts listed under the capture menu in the program window.

Screenshot Captor displays a preview window after capturing a screenshot that offers options to process the image directly. Here it is possible to print it, create a thumbnail of it, save it, copy it to the clipboard or use the send to menu to transfer it. Options are provided to bypass the preview window if it is not needed.

You can send the image to the main program window where you can process it further. Screenshot Captor offers all the tools that users except from a screenshot editor. This includes adding annotations and watermarks, highlighting or blurring areas, drawing arrows, or resizing or cropping images directly.

Screenshots can be saved in a wide variety of formats, including png and jpg, but also jpeg2000, bmp or pdf among others. The program can be configured to remove all meta data from the image. A preview is available that displays both the original image and the new version that will be saved to the system.

Screenshot Captor 3 ships with a set of new features. You can for instance configure the program to upload screenshots automatically or on-demand to image file hosting sites such as Flickr or Imageshack, or to an ftp server. Especially the scrolling window capturing tool in Screenshot Captor 3 needs to be mentioned, as it handles many scrolling windows with ease that other screenshot taking programs fail to capture.

Another feature that sets the program apart is that it is highly configurable. This includes automatic processing options, the ability to take and save screenshots directly or support for third party applications that you can send the screenshots to.

New users may feel overwhelmed at first because of the sheer size of options and menus that the program offers. Mouser has created demonstration videos that explain all the program’s key concept in a few minutes each. Especially the first video, which offers a quick overview, is recommended.

You can download the latest version of the program from the Donation Coder website. The program is compatible with all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system, from Windows 9x to the very latest version.

Verdict

Screenshot Captor is a professional screenshot taking application for Windows. It offers a rich feature set and ships with features that are usually only available in commercial applications.

Screen Capture Software Screenshot Captor

Software

Windows

donation-coder

screen capture

screen capture software

screenshot

screenshot captor

take screenshot

windows software

MWSnap was the program of choice for a long time to create screenshots of software programs to post at this website. It was small, hotkey driven and provided a fast and efficient way of creating screenshots. It had some limitations though like no image editing options at all. It is sometimes appropriate to highlight the important part of a screenshot which could not be done with MWSnap.

Screenshot Captor by Donation Coder Mouser is another screen capture software and it feels like comparing Wordpad with Microsoft Office Word. Screenshot Captor was recently released in a new version and it provides functions that many users will find attractive and useful.

It obviously supports capturing various parts of the computer screen like program windows, selected regions, fixed sized regions, the entire screen but also scrolling windows and objects which is one of the additions in the new version.

The screen capture software can be managed from the program’s interface or by using hotkeys – which can be changed to preferred key combinations – to speed up the screen capturing process. The process of capturing a screenshot is not slower than capturing a screenshot with MWSnap.

Screenshot Captor shines when it comes to processing a captured screen. MWSnap was only able to save it in various formats while Mouser’s software can add elements to the screen before saving it. It is nevertheless possible to simply save it and use it that way. Users who like to add text, images or objects to screenshots on the other hand will find all the tools they need to do just that.

By default Screenshot Captor displays a small dialog after taking a screenshot that can be used to print or save the image, copy it to the clipboard or create a thumbnail of it plus various other possibilities. That dialog can be disabled in the program’s options but it is quite useful for those users who want to take a screenshot and save it right away with processing it further.

Captured screenshots can be shown in the main program interface where they can be processed. The image can be resized, text can be added, sections of the screen can be highlighted and objects added.

Previous screenshots are shown in the capturing history which provides a fast way of accessing them from the program’s interface. Another interesting option is the support for third party tools. It is easy to integrate them in Screenshot Captor and use them to process the images further.

The homepage links to a few additional tools that can be integrated like a color chooser to discover the exact color of a pixel of the screenshot.

The screen capture software should be the right application for anyone who takes screenshots regularly. Users who process their screenshots afterwards will find all the tools they need to do just that without the need to install an image editor to do so.

Update: Screenshot Captor 3 has been released. I suggest you check out the review linked above to find out what’s new. Among the new features are automatic screenshot uploading options, Windows 7 window transparency support and the best scrolling window capturing options that you find in a screen capturing software.

Screenshot Captor

Tools

screenshot captor

screenshots

Software

Windows
<guid

I normal tend to use the print key on windows to make the screenshot and fire up gimp to reduce the size to be able to add it to the article. To be honest, this process takes way to long and I thought of ways to optimize it.

That’s when I found the freeware Screenshot Captor which does everything I need, and more. With Screenshot Captor it is possible to grab the complete screen, part of the screen, a fixed size or the active window using hotkeys. If you simply press the print key it grabs the current screen for instance. Whenever you’ve done that you see a little default box with some options in it, for instance save the image, create thumbnail, discard image and so on.

If you discard the image it is shown in the main window of screenshot captor and you can work with it. You could for instance add text to the screenshot and highlight or blur regions. This is definitely the best screenshot tool for my purposes, it is fast and has everything that I need to speed up the process and still have great screenshots for my blogs.

Update: Screenshot Captor 2 has been released recently by the author of the program. The new version introduces several new features and options. I suggest you check out our new review by following this link: <a
