RIP – Remove It Permanently – is a Firefox add-on that adds options to remove elements on websites permanently. Elements can be pretty much anything from headers, images, advertisement, forms to flash content. Want Google without the Google logo? Digg without advertisement and user comments? RIP can do that for you and much more.

Two new right-click entries appear after installing the add-on for Firefox, which currently does not support Firefox 3.01 but can be forced to be compatible. The first entry, Remove This Permanently, removes the selected element from the current page. If you remove the Google logo from a search it will still appear on a different search. This method is pretty good for quickly removing elements on a website that you visit regularly and that does not have changing addresses.

The second entry Rip Advanced offers advanced features that make it possible to remove elements from a single page, all similar pages, the website and the full domain. That’s not all however. You can also remove all similar items in one go, remove the parent element, all parent elements, all frames and Google Adsense.

A few remarks about the process: It’s pretty difficulty to remove flash elements from a website because you cannot right-click in the elements. They display a different menu. This means you have to click close to them and hope that Rip picks them as the default element that should be removed. A red border appears around the element that would get removed which is a good visual aid.

Elements that are removed do still get downloaded and appear in the cache. This is therefor no method to save bandwidth.

The primary use for Rip would be to remove nerve wrecking elements from websites that you visit regularly. Before you start now and remove advertisements from my website I ask you to consider this before you do it. They pay my bills. If everyone would remove them I would not be able to maintain that blog. And they pay for every pageview. This is also a tip for every Adblock user who is visiting my site. If you want to support me disable Adblock on my website. I do not have popups, layer ads or any other disturbing ads of that kind on my pages. It would help me tremendously on the other hand.

I just discovered that it is really easy to download music from Imeem. I was searching for a song that I heard in Radio and the only hit that I received was a profile link to Imeem. I had to register to listen to the song online which I did but what I really wanted was to download the song I was listening to to my computer to put it on my mp3 player which happens to be my Nokia N73 mobile phone.

The source code does not reveal lots of information about the location of the song which means I once again have to fire up Grab++ to grab the real url of the song and download it. All big music portals use randomized songs these days which are generated when a user requests the song. They are available for a short period of time only which means that time is essential.

Download Orbit Downloader if you have not done so already and start Grab++ from the Tools menu. Grab++ sits there analyzing the Internet connection waiting for multimedia links. All links to multimedia files are listed in Grab++ and can be send to the Orbit Download manager to be downloaded directly to your computer. Grab++ has to be started before you load the Imeem page that contains the music that you want to download.

The download should be started immediately after discovering the link in Grab++ to avoid a timeout. If you get a timeout and the download does not finish delete it and try again.

Imeem uses ridiculously large filenames with the flv (flash video) extension. Make sure you rename the downloaded music from Imeem to be able to recognize it later on.

You might want to convert the flv file to mp3 afterwards. A great software that does this is the Freez Flv to Mp3 Converter

As you might know I have a modded xbox that has a replaced bigger hard drive and I use it to watch movies from my Xbox Media Center. I dislike watching downloaded movies on my computer and transfer them to the Xbox via ftp to watch them on tv instead. I was looking for a solution to add some of my DVDs to the Xbox as well which has the main advantage that I have them accessible all the time from there. No matter if I lend them to someone for instance.

Please note that the following method to convert DVDs into Avi files works only with DVDs that are not copy protected. I will take a look at the possibilities to convert copy protected DVDs in the coming days. The freeware that we are going to us is called Auto Gordian Knot. It is a very simple utility. You basically select an input file from the DVD that has been inserted into your dvd drive.

You will find a so called IFO file on most DVDs and that is the file to choose normally. Sometimes you have to choose a VOB file instead. As a rule of thumb you should view the VOB files that you want to choose before you actually select them to avoid errors such as selecting a menu to be included in the rip.
Once that is done the contents will be read and you have to choose which audio tracks you want to rip as well. You may choose up to two audio tracks, the first audio track is always preselected.

If subtitles are present on the disc they can be included as well, same principle as with audio tracks. After that you define the output size of the movie, the default value is 2 CDs but you may choose anything from 1/4 of a CD to 2 GB.

Size is up to you of course. The smaller options such as 1/4 or 1/2 of a CD should only be applied to single tracks such as episodes of tv series for example. It does not really make sense to add five episodes of a tv series and make the output size 1/4 of a CD which is only about 200 megabytes.

AutoGK has many advanced settings which are not that relevant if you want to quickly rip a DVD. You might want to take a look but you have to know what you are doing in order to change the settings there.

I especially like AutoGK because you may rip DVDs in one go easily. It takes between three and six hours normally depending on the source files and settings that you have choosen. Faster computers will probably need less time. Oh, all codecs needed in the converting process are included which is another great plus.
