Wysigot is a browser that acts both as a website monitor and downloader. One of its main functions is the download of entire websites or selected pages. The process has been streamlined to make it as easy as possible. To start the download of a website or page one would simply enter the url of the site in the assistant that pops up after installation. Supported are http, ftp and file protocols. The next step involves selecting the update check frequency which can be set to automatic, periodical or manual. Wysigot will check the url for updated content and update the information automatically if new contents are found.

The last step in the configuration configures the capturing depths which can be set to first page, first page plus links or whole site. The same menu contains options to allow popups and to set the scanning to be careful which deactivates certain scripts and other potentially malicious contents. The download will start immediately after the last step. The program will display the download progress of all objects on the website.

Experienced users can define objects that should not be downloaded. Among them files like videos, cookies or scripts. Once the website or page has been downloaded it can be browsed in the program interface up to the level it was downloaded from the server.

The website downloader will display all pages that have been downloaded in the sidebar sorted by project name. A download will be initiated for every link pointing to a page that has not been downloaded before. The download speed depends on several factors including the connection speed of the computer system the application runs on.

Different view modes are available that differ from the default html view mode. It is possible to take a look at the contents, attached files (e.g. videos or images) or information (modification date, allowed objects, site and so on). Properties can be accessed for each downloaded website differently or combined for a project. They make it possible to set very specific rules for downloading contents including the number of page revisions to keep or the contents that should be downloaded.

Wysigot is not only a website downloader but also a website monitor. It can be set to monitor websites for changes and notify the user about those changes. Change verifications can be automatic, periodical or manual depending on the user’s choice. Alarms can be set to notify the user if a website has been updated.

The website monitor and downloader uses the rendering engine of Internet Explorer to display the website’s contents. It contains options to import Internet Explorer favorites which is convenient if several of those should be downloaded.

An alternative is the excellent Httrack which runs on Windows, Linux and OSX

Beta day here at Ghacks. First a way to get Windows Vista Beta 2 shipped right to your doorsteps by answering some easy questions in a quiz and now a new beta release of the great website copier HTTrack. The program aims towards the experienced user with all its options and settings but can be used by novices as well. Most settings are optional that should be used for websites that use a lot of scripting and dynamic pages.

The question that some of you might be asking is why would someone want to rip a website ? You could rip websites for offline browsing purposes. Maybe you have a second computer without direct internet access but would like to view the website on this computer as well. A website that gives an overview over a programming language is a good example. Another reason would be to save the information that is on the website this way, maybe you fear that the website might be offline soon.

The HTTrack website offers a step by step guide that can be used to understand the main features of the tool and rip your first website using the settings of the tutorial. HTTrack is available for Windows and Unix, Linux & BSD.

It is sometimes a good idea to keep a local copy of a website on your hard drive. A reason could be that you fear the website will be taken offline in the near future and you want to save valuable information. Another one could be that you want to save it on a computer that does not have internet access all the time.

Getleft is a simple website downloader that downloads the websites that you want to browse offline. All links will be converted to relative links means you don´t have links that point to urls. It´s able to resume downloads and also able to follow external links.

There are several ways to save a website and they largely depend on your needs. If you only want to save textual information you could be finished by a simple copy and paste job. If you want to preserve the links you need to save it as html. Most browsers have the option to save a website locally but what if you need more than one page or would like the information of the links as well ?

You could open every website and save it. This has some disadvantages. First, there is no link structure between the saved pages. If you want to open page 1 you have to find the index file for page 1 which is different from all other pages. Its great for single pages but not great for entire websites or networks.

Before i start with the solution I´d like to point out reasons why someone would like to save a website to a local drive:

1. Fear that the site will be deleted. (Maybe its hosted @ geocities or a similar site, everyone knows that sites tend to come and go pretty fast on free web hosts)

2. For offline browsing. Maybe you don´t have a flatrate and have to pay for the minutes you are online. It could also be that you would like to transfer the website to a pc that has no internet connection. This includes the case that you want to install a new os, e.g. Linux, and have difficulties configuring the internet connection. You could save tutorial sites on your pc before you make the change.

3. You are a collector. This could include everything, most of the time it will be images though.

The tool:

We will be using the freeware tool Httrack which is available for windows, mac os x and linux personal computers. Download it from the official website httrack.com

Every website that you save to your local drive is stored in a project file. The first step after you’ve started httrack is to create a new project by clicking NEXT.

Add some basic information about the project, name and category and the path where you want to save it. I suggest a drive with enough space for all of the files of the website. Please note that you can´t create a new directory in the program itself.

This is the most important options screen for your project. You select an action and add urls to perform this action. If you want to download an entire website select Download web site(s) and add urls to the web address field.

If you only want to download certain file types select Get separated files. You specify the file types by clicking on set options and selecting scan rules.

You can add urls by simply typing one in the text field or by clicking add url. Clicking add url allows you to enter a website you want to download and add login information for that website. Httrack allows you to capture urls as well by using a proxy.

Set Options leads to a projects options page. You can specify lots of information here. Depth of website scan, follow external links, include / exclude files and directories and much more.

The default settings will download all internal websites and refuse to download external websites.
That means if you only want to download a website try the default settings and take a look at the result. Php files will be saved as html.

WinHTTrack arranges the original site’s relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the ‘mirrored’ website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. WinHTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. WinHTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system. NOTES: WinHTTrack is the Windows release of HTTrack.
