The PC remote control software Vectir can be used to control various PC applications with a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or infrared remote control. The remote control software supports a variety of software programs including Winamp, iTunes, Microsoft PowerPoint or Windows Media Player. Vectir can also be used to control various system settings that include volume control, remote, reboot or shutdown commands, using the wireless control as a mouse pointer but also player controls for the supported media players.

The main Vectir interface is divided into a configuration pane and a setup pane. The configuration pane is displaying commands that have already been created either by the remote control software or by the user. These commands can be configured or disabled easily. The setup pane on the other hand is being used to create new commands that become active after creation.

The PC remote control software comes with additional options to setup mouse controls that come in handy during presentations or keyboard macros. The developers of the remote control software have created a compatibility list on their website that lists several devices that are supported by Vectir and some that are not currently.

Vectir is available as a desktop client for the Windows operating system and a mobile version for cell phones supporting Java.

Lee Mathews posted an interesting Teamviewer tip on his new blog aimed at computer administrators. He explained how to create shortcuts to client computers on the computer of the administrator to quickly access the client’s PCs without having to enter data. All that would be needed to connect is the execution of the shortcut.

Teamviewer is a remote desktop software that can be used to easily connect to other computers. The greatest benefits is that it is easy to setup even for users without broad technical knowledge and that it can be used for other purposes than remote desktop access such as presentations or virtual private networks. The Remote Control Software here at Ghacks took a closer look at the software and can be a good read for anyone unfamiliar with the product.

Teamviewer works by entering an unique ID and password in the software to connect to a client remotely. The Teamviewer shortcuts would basically eliminate the need of entering and remembering the ID and password before establishing a connection.

The basic idea is to create Teamviewer shortcuts in a folder on the hard drive and execute these to connect to the client computer. Lee created a folder for each client and one personal folder. So all that needs to be done is to create a shortcut of Teamviewer, right-click it and select Properties. The following parameters should be added in the target box of the shortcut: -i [tv ID number] –Password -[tv password]. (without the [] brackets)

Lee failed to list another possible shortcut: -m filetransfer would initiate file transfer mode. Other options are presentation to start a presentation session or starting the application without the -m parameter for remote support.

The last review of Teamviewer dates back to the last year which would make today a good time to refresh the review. Teamviewer is a software that can be used for various purposes. It supports remote connections, presentation mode, file transfers and virtual private networks. The first surprising aspect of the software is that it does not need to be installed. Both clients need to run the software program to establish the connection between two computers.

Each client creates a unique ID and password and the user who wants to give access to his computer has to send that data to the other user who enters it in his computer. The presentation mode for example displays the full computer screen of the client’s computer giving the other user the option to follow each and every action of the client in real time. There is virtually no delay and the quality of the picture is really good. Even small fonts are readable.

The other options, remote support, file transfers and virtual private networks work the same way. Everything is streamlined for ease of use. Transfers and connections work behind firewalls as well which works nicely in combination with the portable version of Teamviewer.

Teamviewer is free for commercial usage. A few additional versions are available at the developers homepage that suite specific needs. A support version is available for customers which is a basic version of Teamviewer that can only be used to connect to the client’s computer.

You also find a server version and a manager version at the download page. This is an excellent solution for anyone who has to remotely connect to clients computers regularly, who wants to do presentations over the Internet or use a virtual private network. It is free only for non-commercial usage.
