Rapidshare have implemented a new captcha system a while ago that was most likely be added to fight all the automatic downloaders that were able to fill out the captcha for the user to automate the download process. The new captcha however turns out to be harder to beat. Not only for computer scripts though but also for normal visitors of Rapidshare.

The captcha is made up of characters and animal images and the user is asked to fill in the four letters that have the image of a cat attached to them. The problem with that captcha however is that the animal images look really alike and it is damn hard to tell if you see a cat, a dog, a donkey or some other four-legged animal with a tail.

If you concentrate you can identify the cats and fill in the form. The problem is that a wrong answer will load yet another capture with and you have to start over again. I’m all for protection and anti-spam measures but this one is going to far in my opinion. There are better ways to implement captchas. What’s your take on that new captcha ?

A wonderful tip about a hack was send to me yesterday by Joe. It describes how to change the way a PC, or most other devices that use a power source, can be protected by by a simple magnet and some stuff that does not cost more than $5. All you need is a reed switch, a magnet and some duct tape. It does secure your pc as well from someone that wants to turn it on without your permission.

You basically cut the power button cable of the motherboard, install the reed switch (controlled by magnetic fields) in between and tape the reed switch to the front panel. Now, whenever someone presses the power button nothing happens. Only if you press the magnet against the case at the position where you placed the reed switch and the power button the PC will turn on.

This is of course a basic protection and someone who really wanted to access it could simply remove the switch again or replace the power unit in the PC. Take a look at the video below that walks you through the installation of the protection.

If you purchase songs from iTunes you will soon notice that the downloaded m4p files are protected and you will have troubles playing them in mp3 players or software players other than itunes and an iPod. Some users think that this is not the way it should be and even some governments seem to think that the connection between songs purchased in iTunes and the restrictions imposed are not legal in their country.

Another limitation is the absence of a official linux version of iTunes giving all linux users no legal way of obtaining and playing back protected songs. QT Fair Use is a smart application that removes DRM from songs bought by iTunes leaving the tag of the user who bought it in the file. This makes it useless to try and spread the file on the internet afterwards because it would be to easy to find out which user purchased the songs and got the ball rolling in first place.

QT Fair Use can process all songs that are currently in the iTunes library at once making it an ideal tool for users that have a lot of songs that they bought from iTunes. A great feature is that the program works on Windows, Macintosh and most Linux distributions making it a highly flexible solution for most users.

Protecting yourself on the internet is at the forefront of nearly everyone’s mind these days yet so many people are careless when it comes to this area. It is easier than ever for hackers to break in and get all of the personal information from your computer in this day and age and few people are doing anything to counteract this theft.

This is a sad state of affairs to say the least but that is the truth of the matter. The main area where people are lacking is the protection of their user names and passwords for the various sites that require log in to enter. The act of logging in is to protect the various details of your account in privacy and to prevent the theft of your information. So you can see that this information is something that needs to be protected to the fullest that you can manage.

But yet so many people decide to give it little thought and thus open themselves up to the threat of the theft that is so common on the net these days. Your password for any site should be something that not only you can remember with ease, but also something complicated that the hackers can not gain access to. This means that you should carefully choose the password using a series of not only letters but also numbers. This will prevent the hackers from using the software that they have from being able to guess it outright. Never use the password that is your name or just a basic date.

Mix it up as much as possible and keep it as something that you can yourself remember by way of association. Most sites will offer a secret question that you can answer should you forget your password. This is a good way to maintain a certain level of security as well. Do not give the most obvious answer to the question and do not make the answer something that is common knowledge. Make it as difficult as possible.

Never give out any of your information in an email or instant message. Any site that is legitimate will never ask for this information through any of these methods and these are nothing more than a hacker trying to gain access to your accounts. These emails and instant messages will often times look very real and may even point to the site itself, but this is nothing more than a very well planned fake to get your information.
