Install Missing Runtimes With All In One Runtime

Many programs for the Windows operating system need so called runtimes so that they can execute correctly on the computer system. Two of the most popular runtimes are the Microsoft .net Framework and the Java Runtime Environment. Some programs check for missing runtimes and provide options to install them while others do not which usually leads to some research in the readme or on the developer’s homepage to find out if the program has any dependencies that need to be installed on the PC before the software can be used.

All In One Runtime offers an efficient (critics would probably call it unnecessary or overkill) solution to the problem. The program checks the installed runtimes of the Windows operating system and will automatically display and install the runtimes that are not installed on the PC system.

The program will display the runtimes that it intends to install. Windows 7 Taskbar Tweaker

One of the most prominent features of Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7 is the taskbar which its new functionality. The new features include the ability to pin programs to the taskbar, display thumbnail previews of open windows and tabs (for example from Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or the latest version of the Firefox web browser) and jumplists that offer quick links to application specific features.

The free software program Windows 7 Taskbar Tweaker is a portable application for the Windows 7 operating system. It can be used to modify several of the default options of the Windows 7 taskbar, to be precise:

Right-click on a taskbar item to either display jumplists (default) or the standard window menu
Change grouping from grouping applications to not grouping them
Change dropping items to the taskbar from pinning them to opening them
Change the middle-click behavior from opening a new program instance to either closing the window or focusing the window
Change left-click on grouped item button from opening the thumbnail preview to cycling through the windows.
Disable the thumbnail preview

The new settings become available after clicking on the apply button in the program window. The software program is available for download at the developer’s website for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows 7 operating system.

CD DVD Data Recovery Software

Data on CDs and DVDs can become unreadable like data on hard drives and other storage devices. And basically the same set of data recovery programs are available for attempting to restore the data on those optical discs. The reasons why data on CD or DVD discs become unreadable are usually different from the reasons why hard drives and other storage devices fail. The main reasons are scratches on the disc and other problems with the physical structure of the disc.

DataMiner is a portable software program for the Windows operating system that can be used to recover data from optical media such as CD or DVD. The program will analyse the data on the disc using heuristic detection algorithms. The analysis of the data on the disc is highly influenced by the type of disc, the data and the type of error that is encountered when trying to access the data.

Dataminer will analyze the whole disc, a process that can be terminated at any point. The files that have been found up to this point are then displayed in the interface. The display is basic as it will only list the file name (if it was discovered), the size, type and offset of the file on the disc.

It is possible to extract selected files or files of a certain file extension to a local storage device. Other options include a basic search to find a specific file name and saving project related information to continue working on the project at a later time. the CD and DVD data recovery software can also create and load images of physical discs which is obviously the safer way to go as it is then possible to analyze the disc image instead of the disc itself which will reduce the chance to further damage the disc.

Repair Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft’s new security software Microsoft Security Essentials has been getting some good reviews since the first public beta version got released by Microsoft. The security application is now available as a final version to protect computer systems from malicious software. The security program is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Some users have reported Microsoft Security Essentials crashes and other errors that prevent the tool from protecting the computer system. The Fix MSE Utility has been designed for those users. It can repair a Microsoft Security Essentials installation by resetting all Registry and other settings to their default values. The same could be achieved by uninstalling and installing the software program but the benefit of using the Fix MSE Utility is speed.

The portable software program is compatible with the same operating systems that Microsoft Security Essentials is compatible with. It will display a small program window upon startup that looks like the following:

The window contains a small description of the program’s functionality as well as a Fix MSE button which will start the repair of the Microsoft Security Essentials installation. The Microsoft Security Essentials program itself has to be closed during that process to avoid further complications.

Microsoft’s Windows Explorer is the basic file explorer for the Windows operating system. It’s functionality has not changed a lot since its early days and Windows Explorer alternatives have been thriving ever since it was introduced by Microsoft. Ultra Explorer is a free Windows Explorer replacement that can be downloaded as a portable version or as one that needs to be installed. Windows Device Manager Alternative

DevManView is a Device Manager alternative for the Windows operating system. Regulars might already have noticed that the program is another Nirsoft application. The program comes with the usual traits of every Nirsoft programs including portability, the usual table layout and export options. The Windows Device Manager works but does not offer a good overview or exporting features which might be needed in certain situations. There is for example no option to change the tree-view to another view mode.

The portable application offers a flat view mode for all devices that are currently connected to the operating system. The data can be sorted in various ways by clicking on one of the columns of the table. Listed are information like the device name, manufacturer, service, device type code, the driver version, description, date or inf file.

Another option that is not available in the standard Windows Device Manager is the ability to enable, disable or uninstall multiple devices at once. DevManView can also list the devices of a remote computer if the current user has administrator rights on that computer system as well.

All or selected devices can be saved to a text file. Another option is the generation of an html report which will create a html file with detailed information about all or selected devices.

DevManView is an alternative to the Windows Device Manger. It is fully portable, supports 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows and compatible with most Windows operating systems including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. It can be downloaded from the Nirsoft website.

Detect If A PC Can Run Windows XP Mode In Windows 7

You might have heard about the Windows XP Mode in Windows 7. It allows Windows 7 users with supported editions of Windows 7 (those are Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate) to run other Windows operating systems in a virtual environment. Microsoft calls it Windows Virtual PC of which Windows XP Mode is one possibility that is freely available for Windows 7 users with the right edition of the operating system.

Running applications using Windows Virtual PC can be beneficial if the application – or hardware – is not compatible with Windows 7. Most Windows users will probably never come in the situation that they need to run the mode but those that do can download the required software to launch applications in the virtual environment with just one click in Windows 7.

Next to the software requirements are hardware requirements. The computer needs to be able to run Windows XP Mode. More specifically it needs to support Hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) and the option needs to be enabled in the computer’s Bios.

Microsoft has released the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool to give the user exact information if Hardware-Assisted Virtualization is supported by the computer and if it is enabled in the Bios.

The program is compatible with all editions of Windows 7 as well as Windows Vista SP1 or SP2 and Windows XP SP3. The Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool is a portable software program that will display the relevant information upon startup. It will either display that the cpu supports Hal and that it is enabled, that the cpu supports Hal but that it is not enabled in the Bios, that the cpu does not support Hal or that the operating system version is not compatible with the program. JumpTo Lightweight Launcher For Windows

Windows users can make use of a few different ways of launching programs, opening files and folders or commands in their operating system. This ranges from using the start menu or desktop shortcuts to hotkeys. Advanced users rely on programs like Launchy to perform these operations. JumpTo is another lightweight and very speedy launcher for the Windows operating system. The software program is highly configurable and easily accessible through mouse and keyboard shortcuts.

JumpTo comes as a portable version and as an installer to suit the needs of different kinds of users. Probably the easiest way to display the menu of the launcher is to press the right and then the left mouse button. This will open the menu with options to start applications, open files, folders, links, add notes and to start commands.

The application uses four default folders named folders, files, programs and links which can be filled with content easily. JumpTo has a small footprint. It uses less than 4 Megabytes of computer memory while running which is great for low end systems who have troubles running application launchers like Launchy. Windows File Server

Users who want to share files have several options at hand. They can upload the files to file hosting websites and share the links pointing to those files with the users that should be able to access them. They can also setup an ftp server that is running on their local computer system or trade files directly in applications such as Skype.

File Server is a simple http file server that can run on local computer systems. The program is a command line tool without graphical user interface. A user wanting to share files need to manually edit the FileServer.conf file with a text editor to add the right root directory and port for the file server.

The IP and port of the file server can then be shared with users who are allowed to access the file server. All that these users need to do is to point their web browser to the IP and port.

The software program will automatically display a html directory listing of all files and folders that are stored in that root directory. Files can be instantly launched by left-clicking them. Another option is to right-click the files to use actions that are presented in the context menu. This include actions to download the selected file.

Every get request is shown in the command line window. File Server is a tiny software program that uses less than 100 Kilobytes on the computer’s hard drive. It supports download resumes but lacks many features of similar products like password protection, IP filter or multiple file handling.

K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool has been designed to troubleshoot media playback issues that users might experience in Windows. The portable software program displays a selection of options to fix various issues comfortably. The program divides its various troubleshooting options into categories.

Each category lists various options and actions that can be performed by selecting one or multiple of the checkboxes in front of them. The Fixes category is the main troubleshooting category of the program. It can be used to do the following:

Skype Portable 4.1

Skype is a popular voice over IP client for various operating systems. It has since then evolved to not only offer voice over IP capabilities but also video conferencing, text chat and instant messaging functionality. The standard Skype software needs to be installed in the Windows operating system. This installation can add some weight to the computer system if the user is not checking on the advanced options during installation.

Skype Portable as the name suggests is a portable version of the voice over IP client. It comes with the exact same functionality as the original Skype program but does not add any background processes or information to the Windows Registry.

To avoid legal issues with Skype the portable version will download Skype during installation. That download has a size of about 20 Megabytes in addition to the one Megabyte download of the portable Skype application.

Skype portable can then be started from the location the software was downloaded it. Information like contacts are tied to the Skype account which means that they are accessible for Skype users who log into the Skype network with the portable version of the client. Skype portable is available from the Portable Apps website. It is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Autopatcher 1.0.0.6 Released

The Autopatcher development team has released a new version of their popular system updater. The program is a downloader and installer for Windows operating system and software patches. It can therefor be used to download all patches for specific operating systems and software programs like Microsoft Office. The main benefit of running Autopatcher over Windows Update is that the downloaded patches can be used easily on additional operating systems by burning them to DVD or copying them to removable storage solutions like USB flash drives.

Autopatcher is a portable software program that will display a list of available releases upon startup with updates for Autopatcher and the current operating system preselected by default. It is possible to include additional software programs or operating systems in the download.

A click on the next button will initiate the downloads of all patches and additions that have been released for those programs and operating systems.

Downloads can take some time depending on the selected packages and the speed of the Internet connection. The total amount of Megabytes to be downloaded are displayed in the downloader.

All files to patch the computer system are placed in the directory of the Autopatcher Updater after the download. A click on the file autopatcher.exe in the main directory will initiate the update process.

Changes in this release are fixed incompatibilities with Kaspersky security products and several minor changes to the interface.

Google Map Saver

We reviewed the Google Maps downloader Offline Maps last month and came to the conclusion that it was an excellent program for users who want to have offline access to specific regions and locations in Google Maps. The Google Map Saver is a similar application. There are a few differences between the programs that need to be addressed.

Google Map Saver is a portable software program that feels more responsive and less complicated to use. The user can enter a location or point of interest and the program will download the available data from Google Maps. This process takes a few seconds the most on fast connections. The usual Google Maps controls are available including zooming in and out, moving around with the mouse or switching between map, satellite and terrain view.

The zoom factor and map type can also be changed in pulldown menus at the top. Images of the maps that are displayed can be saved in various resolutions (e.g. window size, iPhone, HD 1080 or custom formats up to 4096×4096. Various output formats including jpg, png, targa and bmp are available. The resulting images can be large (40+ Megabytes) if the highest resolutions are selected.

Google Map Saver is an uncomplicated program that can be used to save locations in Google Maps in a short period of time. The program is portable and available at the developer’s homepage. The watermark can be removed by clicking on the globe in the upper right corner to get to the about page and there on the Activate button which will remove the watermark. (via Technobuzz)

Xkcd Comic Wallpaper Changer

Xkcd is a website where new comics are posted regularly. Most of these comics apply to a geek audience and may cause confusion by the rest of the population. The characters in the comics are drawn as stickmen and there is usually lots of text to accompany the drawings. The comics are provided as single images which can be viewed on the website or in an RSS reader.

The xkcd Wallpaper Randomiser is a lightweight software program for the Windows operating system which can be used to grab a random comic from the xkdc website. The comic is displayed in the interface of the portable software program where it can be viewed and set as the wallpaper of the computer system.

All downloaded comics are stored in a local cache so that they are not downloaded again should they be selected by the random comic chooser again at a later time. It is possible to exclude comics from bein displayed as wallpapers by adding them to the exclude list.

The program supports two command line parameters which can be used to automate the process of setting a new wallpaper. The parameter -random will change the wallpaper without displaying the graphical user interface while -silent will ignore any popup windows that might appear (e.g. an error if there is no Internet connection). These parameters combined with a shortcut can be added to the autostart folder or task scheduler to change the wallpaper regularly and automatically.

File Converter File Blender

File Blender is a portable software solution to convert and process file types in the Windows operating system. Unlike other tools of its kind it is highly configurable through various format packages. What this means is that a user can either download File Blender with all supported conversion packages (images, audio, pdf/tiff and js/css) or only some. It is even possible to add other converters to the program if they support command line operations.

The File Blender interface consists basically of a big area where files can be dropped into. The program will automatically recognize the file type if it is supported and display an action menu with the available options to convert the file. Actions for mp3 files would for instance be to convert them to either wav, flac or ogg.

A right-click on the drop area or the actions displays a context menu with options to edit the action file for a specific conversion or the main program ini file. One of the more interesting options of File Blender is the ability to “minify” CSS and Javascript files that are dropped into the interface. It is also capable of splitting and joining pdf and tif files.

Create Text, File And Keyword Indexes With Index Author

Index Author could be one of the fastest way of creating an index of text, files or keywords in the Windows operating system. The portable software program supports all three options and comes with enough advanced features to make this an interesting option even for large textual information. A text index is an index of a single text that has been copied and pasted into the application. The user can alternatively point the app to a supported document on the local computer system. File indexes are indexes of multiple text files whereas keyword indexes index specific keywords of selected files.

The above screenshots shows a file index created by the program. Index Author analyses the text or files to find the most important words. It will then create an index of these words which can be saved as text, an index (idx) file or copied to the clipboard. It is furthermore possible to copy html code of the index to create a html file on the local computer system.

Google Images Downloader

Google Images is part of the Google search engine. It can be used to only search for images in the Google search engine with options to filter the search results. It is for example possible to define a minimum image resolution, image type or color. Images that are displayed in the search engine cannot be downloaded directly in their real size. The search engine user needs to visit the website the image was posted on to do that.

The Google Images Downloader solves that problem by providing the means to download multiple images from Google Images directly. The portable software program is available for the Windows operating system. The user can either copy and paste a Google Image search url into the application or grab the url from the active page in the program directly.

It is then possible to grab the image links from Google Images. The program will grab results from the first five pages by default; A figure that can be changed in the interface directly. Other filters include the allowed image formats and to block html files. All images will then be downloaded to the directory that the user specified in the interface. It takes only a few seconds – depending on the Internet connection of course – to download dozens of images from Google Images.

Multi Image Downloader can be downloaded from Freeware Files. The program is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista (and likely Windows 7 as well).

A click on the start button will initiate the process of removing these rogue security software programs from the computer system if they are installed. It starts by stopping running processes and removing the programs from the computer. The program seems to be updated fairly regularly by the software developer which makes it likely that new rogue antivirus programs will be added to future versions.
