The developers of the Bittorrent client have added several new features and technologies to the popular distribution software. Two of the new technologies that got added are Bittorrent DNA and uTorrent Remote.

When you open the preferences in uTorrent, you will see a new DNA entry in the left menu. The preference lists a small explanation at the top:

Bittorrent DNA is a content delivery system that reduces publisher server load by using Bittorrent peer-to-peer delivery. Is is used only for content that you request.

DNA is enabled by default, at least in the latest test version of uTorrent 3.1. With DNA enabled, users may be able to download data that is powered by DNA faster. The service won’t accelerate standard torrent downloads.

It works exactly like those MMORPG downloaders that Blizzard and other companies offer. These downloaders use official servers and other users who download the data to speed up the downloading. DNA seems to be basically the same deal. Please note that you will also distribute part of the data to other users whenever you download with DNA enabled.

If you do not download data from websites or services that support DNA, you should consider disabling Bittorrent DNA in the preferences as it is of no benefit to you.

Just uncheck Enable DNA powered downloads to block Bittorrent DNA from being used by uTorrent. You may also check Alert me when DNA-powered downloads are added to uTorrent to receive notifications when downloads that make use of DNA are added to uTorrent.

Please note that DNA can also be distributed as a separate client alongside programs, games and other contents on websites. The program works in the same way but is completely independent of the Bittorrent client.

Remote is another new feature. Unlike DNA, it is disabled by default. The technology can be used to connect to the client from a web browser to manage and control the Bittorrent software remotely.

You need to supply a username and password and check the Enable uTorrent Remote Access feature. All you need to do then is to open the remote service on the uTorrent website and enter your computer name and password to remotely connect to the uTorrent client.

Hope this answers some of the questions that users may have when they encounter Bittorent DNA and uTorrent Remote for the first time.

uTorrent 3 Final Bittorrent Client Released

P2p

Software

Windows

bittorrent

torrent

utorrent

utorrent 3.0

windows software
<guid

The final version is build 25406 and existing users should see update notifications when they start their client on their system, or by manually checking for updates by selecting Help > Check for Updates. Users of uTorrent 2.x can download the latest version of the program from the official website, where it is available as a 32-bit and 64-bit application for the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The release notes are as usually available on the official forum. Version 3 of uTorrent adds features such as a portable mode, streaming, torrent ratings or drag and drop sending of files. The complete list of changes and fixes is available in the forum.

The drop files to send feature is incredibly easy to use. Just drop a file that you want to share on the drop area, and uTorrent will create the torrent for you. The program displays a tiny url link that the recipients of the file need to open. The torrent is then added to their uTorrent version. If they do not have uTorrent it is installed on their system.

Streaming needs to be activated in the uTorrent options before it becomes available. All suitable media players are automatically available for selection in the options.

The Stream button becomes then available in the torrent listing. A click on the button loads the stream url in the selected media player. It is then possible to play the media in the player directly, even if it has not been downloaded completely yet.

Depending on your previous version, you may see a different looking client with additional features that you had not had access to before. This includes uTorrent apps which more often than not provide access to media and file releases of companies and organizations. You find some apps among the available ones that add features to uTorrent, a chat for instance.

The getting started guide in the client seems to be new as well. It offers a step by step guide, a beginners guide and links to faqs and information about the program (correct me if I’m wrong here).

The developers have fixed a boat load full of issues, from crashes and stability issues over freezes and hangs to cpu optimizations.

Users should take a look at known issues before they update, if they want to make sure that the program works on their system without difficulties. The list displays confirmed problems and issues that are not fixed in the uTorrent 3.0 stable release.

Most of the bugs listed seem to be limited to display issues, only a few indicate stability issues.

On a personal note. I’m running uTorrent 3.0 since the first alpha and did not have a single problem ever since. The update to version 3.0 went without difficulties. Some users in the release thread are on the other hand reporting problems with the version.

Have you made the update to uTorrent 3.0 yet? What is your impression of the new version.

LimeWire Forced To Shutdown, FrostWire Alternative

P2p

frostwire

gnutella

limewire

limewire alternative
<guid

Users who visit LimeWire’s website are greeted with a legal notice detailing that “LimeWire is under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software”.

TorrentFreak has the whole story and some interesting figures on the market share of the now-defunct P2P system. The figures are from 2008, but show a massive market share of 37%, followed by uTorrent with 14%. This has likely changed a bit over the course of two years, with torrents become more popular.

Some users report that the LimeWire client installed on their system now refuses to update. Others report that the client itself is still working as intended and showing results for searches, which makes sense considering that it operates on the Gnutella network which has not been affected by the ruling. And while the P2P software is not available on the developer’s homepage, it is still available on third party download portals.

LimeWire users who are looking for an alternative may want to take a look at the Open Source client FrostWire which offers a similar functionality. Check out Easily share files on LAN with fellow Ubuntu users using Giver“). I wanted to take that idea a little further and cover a similar tool that allows you to chat with fellow users on your LAN WITHOUT have to add them to a buddy list. Giver is such a tool. Once started it will auto-discover users and allow you to chat away. Giver is simple to install, a breeze to use, and free. A no-brainer for anyone who prefers to chat with their co-workers without having to bother to leave the confines of your desk.

Features

Although not a HUGE list, the features of iptux are really impressive.

Auto-detect other iptux users.

Create shared resources (send files).

Password protect resources.

Change your online information.

What I like most about iptux’ shared resources is that you can password protect your shared resources. And you can easily add/remove files to the resource management. This way you can add files to your shared management that have a password, share them, remove them, and then add files that do not have a password. A nice feature would be to enable the ability to have both password protected and open files in the same manager. That’s not there yet, but would be very handy in a company environment.

Installation

The installation is simple. Just follow these (fairly standard) steps:

Open up your Add/Remove Software utility.

Search for “iptux” (no quotes).

Mark iptux for installation.

Click Apply to install.

Close your Add/Remove Software utility.

Usage

Figure 1

To start up iptux click Applications > Internet > iptux. This will fire up the main window (see Figure 1) where you will quickly see anyone who happens to be on line and also using iptux. As you can see iptux gives you the “Pals” name and ip address. An unconfigured “Pal” will only list their username. Naturally you can configure iptux to display any name you like. But first, let me show you how to send a message and set up resources.

Figure 3

(see Figure 3) you add files and/or folder to your shared resources. If you want to password protect your shared resources, click Set Password and enter your password.

To request shared resources from a Pal simply right-click the Pal in your main window and select Request Shared Resources. NOTE: When you accept a shared directory, you download the full directory. You can not traverse the directory and choose only particular files. So choose wisely when you share a directory.

iptux application is an ideal little tool for collaborating with fellow workers. It’s simple to use, allows you to create shared resources, and is very unobtrusive. Wouldn’t it be nice to just click on a username, send them a file, and have their desktop automatically notify them that the file has arrived?

Well…you can do that with the help of Giver. Giver is a networking tool that automatically detects other Giver users on your network and allows you to quickly and simply share files with them. I do hesitantly write this article only because it seems the development of Giver has come to a stop. That doesn’t keep the application from working exactly as it should, and it still installs on just about any recent release of Ubuntu. So, even though development might have stopped for the moment, the application is still very valid and very useful. And in this article I will show you how to install and use this handy network file sharing tool.

Figure 1

As I have mentioned before, the usage of Giver is incredibly simple. The Giver Recipients window (see Figure 1) will automatically populate with anyone else on your LAN running Giver. This may take some time (depending on how many users there are and how fast your network is). You can give a file by clicking on the user you want and clicking either Give File or Give Folder. When you select either of these a file manager will open where you can navigate to the file and select it.

Figure 2

Once you have given the the file the recipient will see a notification (see Figure 2) that a user wants to give them a file.

When the file is received both sender and receiver will be notified of the success.

Preferences

Figure 3

There aren’t much in the way of settings for Giver. If you right click the notification try icon you can select Preferences. When this new window opens (see Figure 3) you can then change your Name, Picture, and File location.

A word of warning: The only way I have been able to change the picture used for Giver is to use a Web Link. For some reason the File will not open a file manager window to browse for the image file.

By default Giver will save files transferred to you to the Desktop. If you don’t want that click the File Location drop box and select where you want the files to be saved to.

Final thoughts

Although Giver might not be currently in development, it is still a very useful application that allows users to quickly exchange files over a LAN. It does not have the ability to share files outside of that LAN, but within a business or home, this is a nice tool to have around.

Apps For uTorrent Overview

P2p

Software

Windows

bittorrent

utorrent

utorrent apps
<guid

The first version with integrated apps was uTorrent 2.2 beta with four applications in total.

The latest uTorrent 3.0 alpha ships with a total of ten apps, of which most can be installed from within the client. This article acts as an overview to provide uTorrent users with information about the apps that can be installed.

<span

They would not be working if anyone would simply download but not upload files or partially files to other users.

But there are situations where a user does not want to contribute the upload speed to spreading the shared files to other users of the network.

Zapshares has been designed to protect a computer user from accidentally sharing files over P2P networks. The service currently supports several popular P2P applications including uTorrent, Bittorrent, Frostwire, LimeWire, Vuze and Shareaza.

It does that by blocking file uploads in the supported P2P programs but only after the files have been downloaded.

This works well in P2P clients where the user does not upload the bits received while downloading the rest. Zapshares will spring into action once the download of a file has been completed. It will automatically move the file into another location so that it is not offered and shared by the user.

The program will scan the computer system for shared files on the first startup to block those from being shared as well. The software runs minimized in the system tray after this initial configuration wizard.

Zapshares is definitely not the holy grail that protects users from sharing files in P2P networks. We already mentioned that users are uploaders in many P2P networks for as long as they download the files. It should also be noted that Zapshares did not detect the uTorrent installation on our test system.

It is also bothersome that there is no option to close Zapshares once it runs in the system tray.

Users who want to give Zapshares a try can download it from the developer’s website. The software program is compatible with most Microsoft operating systems. (via <a

Torrent Magnifier actually originated as a meta torrent search engine on the web which is still available. The developer’s must have made the decision to create a software for their torrent search engine to increase the popularity and reach of the service.

Torrent Magnifier comes in three different versions; A desktop search engine for Windows based operating systems, a gadget for Windows Vista and Windows 7 based operating systems and an accelerator for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser.

The desktop torrent search engine can be used to quickly search for torrents about a keyword that is entered into the form at the top. Torrent Magnifier will automatically search multiple torrent sites including BTjunkie, Mininova and the Piratebay. The results are sorted by the amount of seeders with other information like the torrent’s name or tracker displayed in each line as well. A click on the Go button will open the website of the selected service in the default web browser. Here it is then possible to access additional information and to download the torrent to the local computer system.

The difference between the gadget and desktop edition is that more information are listed in the desktop edition. Everything else is identical. Torrent Magnifier offers a quick option to search multiple torrent websites for torrents. All three versions of the tool can be downloaded from the developer’s website

Update: Torrent Magnifier’s website and services are no longer available on the Internet. The website returns a 404 not found error and redirects to the hosting company’s website. Users interested in a desktop torrent search engine can take a closer look at Torrent Fetcher which provides a similar functionality. href="http://www.peerblock.com/">PeerBlock was basically a fork of PeerGuardian 2 offering a similar functionality and an active team of developers that would maintain, optimize and increase the functionality of the product.

An interrim beta version of PeerBlock was released today with several important enhancements that should all make it into the PeerBlock 1.0 final release that is expected to be released in the next week. Probably the most important addition in this beta release is a signed driver which helps 64-bit users of Windows Vista and Windows 7 who usually had some problems getting PeerBlock to work on their computer systems thanks to an unsigned driver. There is also no UAC warning prompt when trying to install PeerBlock on these systems anymore.

Mark, the main developer, has posted a huge list of additional improvements in a blog post announcing the beta release of PeerBlock. This includes better usability, warnings if Peer Guardian is running, auto update functionality, archiving improvements and copying over PeerGuardian 2 lists if available.

Check out the <a

Portable versions and installers are provided at the end of the blog post as well. Users who do not want to test the beta version are advised to wait until the final release is being made available on the website of the project.

How To Make uTorrent Portable

P2p

Software

Tutorials Basic

bittorrent

torrent

utorrent

utorrent portable

utorrent tips
<guid

It is for example easier to put a portable version of the Bittorrent client on a removable device so that it can be used on different computer systems without having to worry about settings and paths. Another reason could be to avoid leaving traces of uTorrent on a computer system. The torrent client uTorrent will place several files in the application data folder in Windows after installation.

It is actually very easy to make uTorrent portable. All that is needed is a installation of uTorrent on the computer system. Now create a new file in the directory of the utorrent.exe and name it settings.dat. uTorrent will recognize the file and start using it instead of the settings file located in the application data folders.

Please be aware that old settings are not carried over and that it is needed to configure the client again. All torrents will be missing at the first start as well. You can easily add them again by selecting the correct locations for new and finished downloads in the client. The software will then automatically recognize the new torrents upon restart, perform checks and start downloading them again.

Running a portable version of uTorrent does make it easier to backup the Bittorrent client as well. All that is needed is to backup the files in this one directory (and in the unfinished downloads directory if those should be backed up as well).

uTorrent 2.0 Beta Released

P2p

bittorrent

torrents

udp

utorrent

utorrent 2.0

utp
<guid

It is small, lightweight and offers a good performance out of the box. The currently active branches of uTorrent is version 1.8x which is receiving regular updates from the developers. The first uTorrent 2.0 Beta hit the forum a few days ago. This version is currently only available in those forums and not on the main website or by checking in the client for updates.

The developers, who were working on uTorrent 1.9 alpha initially have decided to skip 1.9 and move forward to version 2.0 directly. The release notes mention the following feature additions in the Bittorrent client besides many fixes and changes.

We’ve added UDP tracker support!

uTP has been improved significantly over the previous alpha, with many bugs fixed and performance improvements. It’s no longer hidden in Advanced settings.

The setup dialog has been overhauled to make it much easier to use and with a built-in speed test. It’s still not quite complete yet, but this will give you a good taste of what we’re up to with it!

A new transfer cap feature has been added to track bandwidth usage, along with graphs to show your usage.

UDP trackers are a different protocol for tracker communication that uses significantly less processing power on the tracker end. It’s important for us to support this because trackers have limited resources, so this should allow them to support many more users with their current hardware and not crash under the load.

Support for UDP trackers could be beneficial not only for torrent tracker administrators and owners but also users as the performance gain could be noticeable on the front end as well.

uTP is an alternative communication method for BitTorrent traffic that allows the client to automatically regulate its bandwidth usage to avoid adversely impacting your internet connection. This will allow you or other users on the network to download their torrents without killing your connection without any additional setup required.

This is probably the most exciting addition for users who like to run uTorrent 24/7.

The transfer cap settings were added in response to various users who have ISP-mandated caps on how much data they can download/upload in a month. Now you can track your usage in MB (with a handy graph to visualize it) and even configure µTorrent to stop torrenting once the limits are exceeded. Currently, you can configure the time interval, the data cap and whether it should stop based on only download, upload, or both combined.
As a privacy notice, this traffic data is not sent back to us or anyone.

<img

Currently only test servers that are located in the United States are accessible which makes it unsuitable for users from Europe and Asia.

<img

Many feared that this change of ownership would spell doom for the website. It was not clear back then what the new owners were planning and operations turned back to normal shortly thereafter.

The Torrentfreak website reports today that the new owners will introduce paid subscriptions to The Piratebay to pay the rights-owners with the money. There is no word yet on the exact amounts of money that users will have to pay to be able to share and download files at the website. The new owners seem to have a system in mind that rewards uploaders so that they have to pay less (up to nothing) depending on the files and bandwidth that they share.

The Piratebay has roughly 3.5 million registered users and many more who do not have an account but use the website to download torrents. It will be interesting to see how this new model will impact the userbase of the service. It is however very likely that a majority will leave the website to use free alternatives instead. Traffic levels are surely going to drop as soon as the new owners introduce the new subscription based scheme.

What’s your take on the issue?

The Piratebay Sold To Swedish Software Company

P2p

bittorrent

globabl gaming factory x

piratebay

techcrunch

the piratebay

torrent

tracker
<guid

It is rare that websites like The Piratebay get bought off, they usually cease to exist either by legal pressure or by being closed by its administrators.

The two most important questions right now for the millions of users who use The Piratebay are these two: Who are Global Gaming Factory X and what are their intentions with the website. <a

The only outlook can be found in the full press release:

“We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site.”

Paying the copyright owners for content that is downloaded via the site (which actually are only torrent files and not copyrighted content) can mean different things. They could share advertising revenue with copyright holders which would probably be the only revenue sharing model that would not have a huge impact on visitor numbers. It would surely be different if they would roll out a subscription based model.

We keep you updated on how things evolve from here. The developers are already working on uTorrent 1.8.3 and 1.9 but those are in beta and alpha stage currently and only recommended for the adventurous user. The changelog does not list a lot of new features and changes. One that many users will not like is the inclusion of the Ask Toolbar in the installation process.

The Bittorrent client will display a dialog that will install the Ask Toolbar if the user does not uncheck those options in the setup. The only new feature that has been added is btsearch bundling which basically allows users to add Bittorrent search engines to the uTorrent search engine so that it is possible to search these sites from within the uTorrent client. The btsearch file is a XML file that adds search engines to the search box in the upper right corner of the Bittorrent client.

The search results will still be opened in a new tab of the default web browser. Below is an example on how to create a btsearch file for Mininova and The Piratebay.

<!--Start Code-->
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<OpenSearchDescription>
<ShortName>mininova</ShortName>
<Url template="http://www.mininova.org/search/?search="/>
</OpenSearchDescription>
<!--End Code-->

<!--Start Code-->
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<OpenSearchDescription>
<ShortName>mininova</ShortName>
<Url template="http://thepiratebay.org/search/"/>
</OpenSearchDescription>
<!--End Code-->

The only parameter that needs to be changed normally is the url that has to point to the site’s search engine. The files have to be saved as .btsearch files and can then be dragged and dropped into uTorrent. It is also possible to register the .btsearch extension with uTorrent in the options. You can download uTorrent 1.8.2. from the official website.

Pirate Bay Trial Judge Biased?

P2p

The Web

bittorrent

pirate bay

the pirate bay

torrent
<guid

Several of the charges brought forth against the founders had to be dropped during the trial. It did come as a surprise to many that the Pirate Bay founders where convicted in the end facing both jail time and compensation charges.

A recent turn of events might explain why the founders have been found guilty: Mashable and various sources are reporting that judge Tomas Norström has close ties and connections to the entertainment industry. The guys at Torrentfreak have created a list of his known connections:

Swedish Association of Copyright (SFU) – The judge Tomas Norström is a member of this discussion forum that holds seminars, debates and releases the Nordic Intellectual Property Law Review. Other members of this outfit? Henrik Ponten (Swedish Anti-Piracy Bureau), Monique Wadsted (movie industry lawyer) and Peter Danowsky (IFPI) – the latter is also a member of the board of the association.

Swedish Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (SFIR) – The judge Tomas Norström sits on the board of this association that works for stronger copyright laws. Last year they held the Nordic Championships in Intellectual Property Rights Process Strategies.

.SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation) – Tomas Norström works for the foundation that oversees the .se name domain and advises on domain name disputes. His colleague at the foundation? Monique Wadsted. Wadsted says she’s never met Norström although they have worked together.

The judge did not see a conflict of interest in his involvements. The judge’s opinion does not really matter in this case as judges are supposed to be impartial and a membership in an organization that favors or even promotes the prosecution’s viewpoints have to be considered a conflict of interest. The Pirate Bay lawyer’s have already stated that they will request a re-trial.

uTorrent Port Checker Online

P2p

The Web

online service

port forwarding

port mapping

ports

router

utorrent
<guid

It basically describes the concept of forwarding connections to a specific local computer system. Usually a computer router, firewall or other hardware device that is managing or controlling traffic is involved in the process and needs to be configured to forward the port. Port forwarding can be a big issue when running P2P applications like uTorrent as a wrongly configured router can reduce or even block the traffic to the local computer running the P2P application.

Port forwarding can be configured in the router or traffic controlling device. It basically consists of telling the router route to send incoming traffic to a specific computer by specifying a port and IP address.

One of easiest ways to check if a port is properly forwarded is to use an online port checker like the one provided by uTorrent. To verify the port forwarding open the following url in your web browser http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=1337 and change the number at the end to the port that you want to forward.

The script will check if the port is forwarded properly:

The above screen is displaying that the port forwarding has been properly configured. It will display that an error has occured. The port forwarding test can be repeated after adjusting the configuration settings.

P2P: The Owner Free File System

P2p

file distribution

file-sharing

Networks

off-system

Open Source

peer to peer

windows software
<guid

File sharing on standard p2p networks like Bittorrent is not anonymous as IPs are visible once a connection has been established.

The OFF-System is a peer to peer networking system that is using a different approach than darknets like Freenet. Darknets anonymize user data while the Off-System creates randomized multi-used data blocks which means that it is not possible to map a data block to a single file on the network.

To retrieve data from the peer to peer network one would need to download all required blocks plus the so called retrieval url which is created when files are added to the network. Each block on its own is nothing but a set of random data which means that this data is not copyrighted by anyone.

multi-page article on their website describing it in great detail. Users on the other hand can simply download the Open Source client of the Off-System which comes with a comfortable search function build in.

The options are quite extensive ranging from incoming and outgoing filters, security settings like trusted nodes to networking and advanced options. There is usually a overhead involved when replicating files which can range from a 50%-200% file increase on the receiving end.

Downloading Torrents with Transmission

Browsing

Desktop Manager

Linux

Mac

Open Source

P2p

Software

Tutorials Basic

bitorrent

peer to peer

transmission
<guid

Whether it is downloading ISO images, your favorite non-licensed anime, or large-scale backups, torrents are a simple way to manage massive downloads. But how do you manage torrents in Linux? There are a number of possible clients, some command-line and some full-on graphical clients. The torrent client that I prefer is called Transmission. It’s the default client in the GNOME desktop and it makes “torrenting” a breeze.

Naturally we’re not going to get into the legality of torrents. But I will make this disclaimer that copywritten materials should not be downloaded unless you have express permission to do so. With that being said, let’s take a look at how to get your “torrent on” with Trasmission.

Transmission can be started in one of two ways. The first is to go to the Internet sub-menu of the Applications menu where you will find the Transmission entry. The second method is to click on a torrent link from a web site which will prompt you if you want to automatically open the link with Transmission.

Open With...

If you know you are always going to use Transmission for your torrenting, click the “Do this automatically…” check box. This will make it so that you do not have to go through this step every time.

Once you click OK in this window two windows will open: Transmission’s Main window and Torrent Options window. The Torrent Options window will be the window with focus because you have to actually add the torrent to Transmission before it starts the downloading process.

The possible options are:

Options

Destination Folder – Choose where your torrent should be downloaded to.

Verify Local Data – This option is currently suffering from a bug and does not work 100%. I would not make use of this feature.

Start When Added – If you click this, the torrent will start downloaded as soon as it is added.

Move Source File to Trash – This will delete the seed file when the download is complete.

Once you have enabled all the options you want click Add to start your downloading. The Options window will disappear leaving only the Transmission main window.

Within the Transmission main window you will see your download progress. You can then select the download and click Pause to temporarily halt the download or you can remove the download. You can even close out transmission and, upon reopening the application the download will resume.

Main Window

Once the torrent is complete you will receive a notice it has finished. Once the download has complete, if you leave Transmission open, you will begin seeding other torrents. By seeding torrents your machine will be used so that others can torrent from you. If you have a problem with this you should close Transmission immediately.

Preferences

Out of the box, Transmission works like a champ. But there might be some tweaks you’ll need for your particular set up. If you go to the Edit menu you will see the Preferences entry. Click that to get to the the preferences goodies.

One of the more important preferences is the Block List (found under the Peers tab). This blocklist is a Blutack Level 1 Blocklist. You can actually place more blocklists in the the ~/.config/transmission/blocklist folder to make use of them.

There are many more options to get into, the blocklist should be the first you take care of. Make sure you check Enable Auto Updates for Blocklists.

Final Thoughts

Transmission is one of the easiest torrent clients available. And if you like the idea of a simple torrent client, but you use Mac you can have your Transmission as well. Give Transmission a go, you won’t regret it.

Joe Biden: Piracy’s New Enemy

Misc

P2p

The Web

file-sharing

internet security

Joe Biden
<guid

Everyone knows that Barack Obama actively used the Internet while campaigning but what are his views on other things technology related? Most notably, how do the new guys plan to tackle issues like online piracy?

One person who has acted on this subject in the past is Joe Biden. Yes, the same guy who’s now the U.S. Vice President. In fact, he’s been pretty active in trying to defend the rights of media companies. Let’s take a look at his accomplishments.

Joe Biden’s earliest tryst against piracy came in 2002, when he drafted a letter to the Justice Department, urging action against people who ‘intentionally’ allow copying over p2p networks. Then last year, Biden supported an RIAA-led bill to restrict Americans from copying songs from Internet radio services. His efforts got him invited to the MPAA’s party in favor of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

In April of this year, Biden tried to get the US government to spend a billion dollars so that authorities could monitor p2p networks for illegal activity. What constitutes illegal activity, I have no idea.

Joe Biden has been pretty vocal about other aspects of the Internet as well, most notably a strong supporter of having Internet filters in place for schools. Another interesting tidbit is that at one time, the man also supported levying an Internet tax on people.

It remains to be seen what Joe Biden will do in his newfound political role as Vice President. However, going by his track record, it’s fair to say he’ll be on the media companies’ side most of the time.

What do you think of Joe Biden’s war against Internet piracy? Do you know of other political figures who have the same ideals? How do you think politics affects Internet legislation? Let me know in the comments.

FrostWire, free and fast Gnutella

Open Source

P2p

Software

file-sharing

frostwire

gnutella

limewire

limewire pro

piracy
<guid

Unfortunately, it limits the amount of ultrapeers to whom connections can be made, in effect reducing the amount of search results and the number of people from whom downloads can be made. LimeWire only removes these limitations if its Pro version is bought at the cost of $35.

As LimeWire is open-source, several forks of it exist. One of these forks is called FrostWire, a client which appears and works in a similar fashion but removes many limitations of the free version of LimeWire. FrostWire also has some features which LimeWire Pro lacks, such as BitTorrent support.

Unlike LimeWire Pro, FrostWire is completely free to use and download. FrostWire is based on LimeWire’s Java engine and as such, it works on OS X, Linux and Windows, providing Java 1.5 or above is installed.

FrostWire can identify files tagged as Creative Commons in searches, much like LimeWire does, it can filter out junk results like LimeWire, supports proxies, works well with iTunes and there’s no viruses or spyware with it. A more in-depth review is on my weblog, Webby’s World.

FrostWire is an easy way to save $35 if you really wanted to buy LimeWire Pro.
