When it comes to GTD I’m pretty picky about what I use. I do enjoy the simplicity of online applications like Simple GTD, but if I have a lot of very elaborate projects I need much more power. There are online solutions, but the great ones like Nozbe tend to cost money. While I have no problem with that, my picky nature means that the chances of an app working for me is slim.

Then along came ThnkingRock, an Australia based application that has all the power of the online apps, plus more, for free. It has been developed for Linux, OS X and Windows and is currently in its 2.0 epsilon release.

In short, ThinkingRock implements David Allen’s GTD methodology pretty much as close as any app can come to it and it stays true to it throughout the way. It keeps the stages of GTD distinctly separate and enables you to create advanced reports, print them or save them as pdf, xls, etc.

What I love most about ThinkingRock is the way it manages task processing. In most applications, this is not really a separate step, it happens in conjuncture with collection. You usually create a task and assign it a project, a context, some notes maybe and that’s it. In Thinking rock you can actually collect thoughts. Just jot it down and save it. At the end of the day you can come back and process these thoughts, adding necessary info to each one. They are shown one by one, so it captures the true essence of “processing”. I love this because what seemed like a good idea and I may have created a project for it, might not seem so great at the end of the day. So when I get to processing I can still decide if it should be a project, or I should defer it, delegate it, or just delete it.

The app is full of great ideas and great features, I urge all of you GTD junkies to try it out, I’m trying to make it my one stop organizational app. Not having it accessible online may hinder some people and I agree that this is something they should address in the future. There is a Pocket PC companion available, but I doubt that is the solution here.

I bought a lot of games, DVDs and CDs in the last 25 years and have a rather large collection at home. I also lend media to friends and sometimes forgot about it for a couple of months or even years until my friend brought it back to me. Using a software to organize all my books, games, CDs and DVDs was never a top priority in my life because it would literally take ages to add all of my items into the software.

With more than 2000 books and hundreds of CDs and DVDs it would just be a pretty boring process and I don’t want to waste that much time. Libra could be a solution for me. It is a free software that organizes collections offering several features that make it stick out of the masses.

The first is a unique one that I never heard about before. It can use a webcam to scan a barcode and identify the item by itself. No more typing and searching through the results to find the item that you bought. This is really useful.

Libra supports other search options besides keyword searches, those are: UPC, ISBN, EAN and Jan in case the barcode reader can’t be used or the item does not have a barcode which is the case for many of my books that I own.

Libra currently searches six Amazon databases which should be fine for most Books, Games, CDs and DVDs but could pose problems for older items. The search itself is very fast and displays covers as well as information about the item. All items are shown as if they were lying on a bookshelf which is also how they are shown in your collection.

Several other features include a way to keep track of borrowed items, print options, create web pages with your collection, import possibilities for existing collections and xml support.

I had a small conversation with mouser today, one of the guys who runs the great donations coders website. He mentioned that they were running a blog and forum as well and I was kinda stunned by this. I visited the site many times but never realized that there was a well frequented blog and forum as well. One of the blog posts was mentioning a new application called Desktop Teleporter which immediately caught my attention.

A user of the donation coder forum suggested a new application that would automatically move files that were in the process of being placed on the desktop to a selected folder. You may choose a folder on your own and select to exclude file extensions and file types from this process. Everything else will be moved if the application is running in the background.

Last but not least you may choose to add notes to files that are moved or disable that option completely. I was thinking that the application could be enhanced by adding filters to it that would move files to different folders if you choose to.

The program stays in the system tray, can be paused if you like and resumed at a later time. It also has a right-click entry that takes you directly to the folder that you have chosen.
