We have covered Open XML Viewer in November 2008 when it was released as a technical preview which was available for the Firefox web browser on both the Windows and Linux operating system. The program was able to display docx documents as html documents. The conversion did however ignore several objects and elements in the technical preview.

Open XML Viewer has now been released in version 1.0 which comes with an increased functionality and compatibility. The developers have added support for Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8 as well as Opera (on both Linux and Windows). Several enhancements have been made to the document conversion as well. This includes support for additional drawing shapes including Parallelogram, Trapezium, Diamond, Block arrows, lines, 5-pointed Star, Hexagon and triangles, support for document themes and Math ML equations.

Downloads are available for all supported web browsers at the Codeplex website where the project is hosted. Take a look at our “Ways to open docx documents” overview if you are looking for a more traditional way of opening docx documents.
