You may not need to configure network settings at all before connecting to the Internet via a network cable. Even wireless connections have become easier to configure, as it is usually only needed to enter the secure code to establish the connection.

Things get more complicated when you need to connect to a network or create a network. That’s when you come into contact with IP addresses, DNS servers or default gateways that you need to configure.

While you can do that under Windows’s control panel, it is not the most comfortable thing to do, especially not so if you have multiple network adapters installed on the system.

The free portable software Simple IP Config can be used to configure network settings for all installed network adapters.

You need to start by selecting a network adapter from the selection menu at the top. Hit the refresh button afterwards to refresh the information if it is not done automatically.

You should now see the adapters IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, dns server and IP type in the interface. You can start modifying settings on the right side of the screen. It is possible to clear, edit or add values to all fields.

Make sure you do not forget to hit the Submit button after you have finished configuring the settings for the selected network adapter.

Three additional options are available. You can hit the renew or release button on the left side to renew or release the IP address. It is furthermore possible to enable or disable the Windows Firewall and to enable DHCP.

Experienced users may not need to use Simple IP Config. It is nevertheless handy to have all settings on one screen. Inexperienced users can do all configuring of network adapter settings in one simple to use interface instead of having to make their way into the depths of the Windows control panel.

Interested users can download Simple IP Config from the project website over at Sourceforge. The portable program is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Configure Windows 7 Network Adapter Binding Priority

Tutorials Basic

Windows

network

network adapter

windows 7

windows tips
<guid

Probably the most common example is a notebook or mobile device that can connect to the Internet via a wireless connection or a wired connection. If you have a device that can connect to networks in multiple ways, you may wonder how Windows determines the priority of the installed network adapters.

Say you want to make sure that your computer uses a wired connection when available as the main means of connecting to a network, and a wireless connection otherwise.

Network connection priorities are configured in the Windows Control Panel. The configuration setting is deeply hidden, and you have to click several times before you finally reach the settings.

Open the Windows Control Panel. You can do that with a click on the start orb, and the selection of Control Panel from the Windows start menu.

Locate and click on Network and Internet, and then on Network and Sharing Center on the next screen.

Find Change Adapter Settings under the left sidebar and click the link. This opens a new screen with all of the configured network connections of the operating system.

Select Advanced > Advanced Settings from the menubar. This opens the Advanced Settings under Network Connections.

You see a list of your connections under the Adapters and Bindings tab there.

Left-click on of the connections to select it, and use the up and down arrow buttons to move it up or down in the listing. The topmost connection is the default connection used on the computer. This way, you can change the network adapter binding priority under Windows 7.

You need to click on the ok button after making changes to save them. The new network connection priority is active from that moment on.

Here is a quick tip how to find out which connection is used on your computer right now. Open the Windows Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Esc and switch to the Networking tab.

At the bottom you find adapter names and their connection status and history. Just access a website or service that requires a network or Internet connection and watch the information under Networking in the task manager. The network adapter used to establish the connection should show bandwidth utilization, while other adapters should not show anything.

And that’s how you check which network adapter is used on your computer, and how you change the binding priority of all network adapters.

Display Network Information With Win IP Config

Software

Windows

ipconfig

network

network adapter

win ip config

windows software
<guid

Basic commands like ping, netstat, ipconfig or traceroute can provide them with valuable information about the state of the network and the connections.

Win IP Config is a program for Windows that makes some of these tools available in a graphical user interface. The interface uses tabs to divide the information and functionality, available are the tabs host info, IP info, interfaces, routes (filtered), netstat and report.

Win IP Config will for instance display in depth information about the network adapters including their gateway, IP, DHCP (DHCP server and lease time) or DNS.

The networking software will also display the current routes and an output of the netstat command in its tabs. Those information alone are valuable and quickly accessible.

Win IP Config provides access to controls in the header as well. Those can be used for instance to renew the IP address or add a new one, to add or delete routes or to display detailed IP statistics including header and address errors plus other problems related to that.

The report tab basically displays all the collected information in an easily readable format. It is possible to export the report as a text document for further processing.

Win IP Config is a handy program for users who prefer to work with a graphical user interface instead of the command line. It does not totally replace the command line as it does not provide access to commands like traceroute or ping.

The program can be downloaded from the developers website. It has not been updated in a while but worked without complications on our 64-bit Windows 7 Professional test system. (via <a

The application is divided into multiple taps that display the various information. The default tab will list all available network adapters and their settings including the adapter’s speed, type, physical address and about a dozen additional settings like DHCP and WinS status.

Other tabs of interest include the Connections tab that is displaying all open connections including the remote IP address, the local port and the program that is using that connection. There is also an option to display UDP listeners, remote computer names and internal connections.

<span

The four last tabs display detailed IP, TCP, UDP and ICMP stats. These are excellent for in depth information about the computer network but usually not that useful to most users.

The information can be copied to the Windows clipboard or saved to disk in a text file. Users who are interested in an excellent lan monitor can Network Monitoring Software NetWorx). The developer of the network monitoring software was busy between then and now and released regular updates to the monitoring software. Yesterday version 5 of Networx was released and the version bump gave us the excuse to take another look at the software program.

Networx offers several network and bandwidth related tools in its interface. It will place an icon in the Windows system tray after download that will open a bandwidth monitor on left-click and the context menu with all the available modules on a right-click.

The bandwidth monitor will display useful information about the bandwidth consumption of the computer system including daily, weekly and monthly reports, an overview of today’s bandwidth consumption, custom bandwidth reports, dial up sessions and hourly rates. Data can be exported and backed up among other things. This module gives the system administrator a quick overview of the bandwidth consumption of the computer system.

Networx offers additional modules that aid in the network monitoring process. This includes a speedmeter which can measure the network’s (or network devices) throughput. The tool is basically a speed test that will monitor the current network traffic and display the current, average and maximum transfer rates.

It is furthermore possible to setup a bandwidth quota and trigger alerts if 80% of that quota has been used. It is also possible to configure the quota to only cover upload or download bandwidth and set it to be a daily, weekly or monthly quota.

Ping, traceroute and netstat commands are available from the context menu of the network monitoring software as well. The options are quite extensive and allow the user to select an individual networking adapter to be monitored, configure notifications or define on and off peak hours.

<a

It is for instance important if the computer is connected to a router with configured port forwarding. There are other benefits which are not part of this article. Experienced computer users know how to set static IP addresses for their network adapters. It might take them a minute or two but usually not longer than that.

Inexperienced computer users on the other hand might want to take a look at the Simple Static IP networking tool which allows them to set a static IP address with a few clicks of the mouse button.

A user who wants to set a static IP address needs to select the network adapter from the pull down menu on top of the application’s interface. Simple Static IP will then display the current settings of the network adapter including the assigned IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS server.

A click on Enable Static IP will configure a static IP address for the selected network adapter. It is possible to keep the DNS settings or use the router or the Open DNS servers as the dns server for the network adapter. It is also possible to randomize the static IP address by clicking on the Randomize New IP button in the interface.

<a

The computer program can be started right after downloading and unpacking it to the computer system. It will scan the computer system for connected network adapters and display in depth information about each of them.

The information are divided into tabs located at the top of the interface which lead to information about network adapters, TCP / UDP statistics, IP statistics, ICMP statistics and general information.

Each tab contains in depth information. The network adapters tab for example lists dns servers, the maximum transmission unit, the network adapter name, hardware address, IP addresses, default gateways and more than 20 additional information about each network adapter. All network adapters are displayed next to each other in the program interface which makes comparisons a very comfortable process.

The program can be used to release and renew IP addresses that are obtained through a DHCO server. This is done by selecting on, and selecting the desired action from the File menu of the menubar afterwards.

Adapter Watch comes with the usual Nirsoft options to export the network adapter information as HTML reports. Additional options include changing the auto refresh rate, displaying data sizes in bits or bytes and the ability to release and renew IP addresses for selected network adapters.

The computer program is compatible with all Microsoft NT operating systems since Windows 2000 including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. The program seems to be compatible with Windows 9x as well but some information about the network adapters might be displayed incorrectly there.

Adapter Watcher is available in other languages besides English. Users can download versions for more than 20 different languages from the developer website.

Mac Address Changer

Software

Windows

mac address

mac address change

mac address changer

network

network adapter

portable software

windows software

Rarst ran a little review of the MAC address changing software program Mac MakeUp today. If you have not checked out his website you might wanna do so as he constantly covers interesting tools and services there. Back to the software program. Mac MakeUp is a portable software for the Windows operating system that can change the Mac address of a network adapter. The Mac address can be described as a parameter that can be used to identify network adapters. You might have heard about them in the context of wireless networks and Mac address spoofing.

The Mac Address Changer might also be useful to change the Mac address regularly to avoid identification. After starting the software program it displays the connected network adapters in a pull down list on top. It provides the means to generate a new random mac address for the selected network adapter or enter one manually.

It is also possible to pick a manufacturer from another pull down list to add the manufacturers code at the beginning of the Mac address. The last six digits are 123456 which can be replaced with a combination of the user’s choosing.

<span

Believe it or not, managing network devices is easier in Linux than it is in Windows.? With the help of modern desktop environments (such as GNOME and KDE) managing your ethernet and wireless devices is a snap.

In this article I am going to introduce you to the system-config-network tool that ships with the Fedora distribution. The specifics of my particular installation are:

Fedora 10

GNOME 2.24.3

Generally speaking networking in Linux is a no brainer. Especially when your machine receives its IP address via DHCP, it’s almost always just “plug and play”.? There are, of course, times when you have to configure your machine manually to use a static IP address. For this the system-config-network tool comes in very handy.

Starting the Tool

From the GNOME desktop go to the System menu and click on the Administration sub-menu. From there click on the Network entry (not the Network Device Control) to start up the tool. You will need the root password to start (and use) this tool.

system-config-network

As you can see (in the image to the left) the tool has a very user-friendly interface.? there are four main sections:

Devices: This lists the devices associated with physical hardware on your machine.

Hardware: this lists the actual networking hardware on your machine.

DNS: The hostname and DNS servers needed for your network.

Hosts: This allows you to add entries to the hostname routing table (/etc/hosts).

Configuring a New Device

Device Type

The first thing you need to do is to click the New button to begin the device setup wizard.

You will have six different types of devices to choose from. Most likely you will be configuring an Ethernet or a Wireless connection.

Once you have selected the type click the Forward button.

Let’s configure an Ethernet connection.

Which Hardware?

If your particular network card isn’t listed then most likely drivers haven’t been installed on your machine. Fortunately Linux has reached a point where most network cards are supported.

Select the card you want to configure and click the Forward button to continue on with your network configuration.

Network Settings

The next step is to actually configure the settings for your hardware. In this example a Static IP address is to be configured.

Enter in all of the relavent information for your network configuration.

Once you have completed this configuration click the Forward button to move on. The next screen only serves to review the information you have configured. Once you have reached that window, if the information is correct, click Apply to complete the setup of your network device.

You are probably asking yourself “Where is the DNS configuration?” Good question. The answer is simple. From the main window click on the DNS tab to reveal the location of DNS information for your network. Most likely it’s not there yet. On that tab you can edit the hostname of the machine and the primary, secondary, and tertiary DNS addresses. You will notice a lack of a Save button on this tab. In order to save this information you have to go to the File menu and click the Save entry.

Activate Your Interface

Go back to the main window and click on the Devices tab. Now select the interface you want to activate and click the Activate button to start the device. If you do not have access to the Activate button that means you have to go back to the devices tab, select the hardware you want to be able to activate, and click the Edit button. What you need to do is to click the “Allow All Users To Enable and Disable The Device” entry. Now save the changes (File | Save) and go back to Activate the device.

Your network device should now be up and running!

Fast IP Switcher

Operating Systems

Software

Windows

dns

ip switcher

network

network adapter

proxy
<guid

Worth than that was the fact hat I had to remember those settings.

Free IP Switcher [via Tech Malaya] is the perfect tool for this situation. It offers a one click change of the network settings that require no reboot. Probably the fastest solution if you connect to different networks regularly.

What I really like is the feature to import the current network settings which spares you from the hassle to add them to the IP Changer as well. Different IP settings are available in tabs in the program and it only takes two clicks to activate another configuration.

The program offers several additional settings that can be added if needed besides the obvious ones like IP, DNS and Proxy. The Computer Name and the Workgroup can be changed as well as the default printer of the system. Last but not least it is possible to set the DNS Domain and a Wins Server.
