The Microsoft .net Framework is being used by a wide variety of software applications. Microsoft made the decision to provide the different .net Framework versions as separate installations. This effectively means that someone who installs the Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 on his computer will automatically install the previous .net Framework versions as well for backward compatibility.

It can happen that the uninstallation or repair of a .net Framework installation fails which can have the effect that a new installation wont succeed either. Manually removing the leftovers to be able to install the framework anew is a complex process.

A far better solution would be to run a cleanup tool that will remove all traces of the Microsoft .net Framework from the computer system.

Aaron Stebner’s (via Raymond) Microsoft .net Framework Cleanup Tool is that software program. The portable application scans the computer system for installed .net Framework versions.

It will display them in a list with the option to uninstall a specific .net Framework version or all of them from the computer system. The software developer points out that his application should be used as a last resort if the regular installation or uninstallation of the Microsoft .net Framework fails on the computer.

We have covered the Wikipedia Screensaver in the past which displayed and rotated through random Wikipedia pages. Some users did not like the randomness of the screensaver which could bring up inappropriate content on the computer screen.

The Wikiquote Screensaver makes use of yet another Wikipedia site but gives the user more control over what is actually displayed when the screensaver activates. Wikiquotes provides access to a large collection of quotations in several languages.

The screensaver makes use of an interface that can be used to add quotes to the screensaver. At least one quote has to be added before the screensaver starts working at all. This is done by searching for a name or term. A list of matches will then be displayed. By default all are selected to be added to the screensaver’s rotation.

The quotes that have been selected have to be saved in the end. Once that is done they will be displayed when the screensaver becomes active.

The screensaver requires the Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 to function. The pack can be downloaded from Microsoft.

What’s your favorite quote? Let me know..

The Microsoft .net Framework contains a library of pre-coded functions and a virtual machine that manages code execution. Properly coded .net applications will perform a check if the Microsoft .net Framework is installed on the computer before they start the installation or execution. Improperly coded applications on the other hand might not which can lead to error messages, crashes, hangs or nothing at all.

The Microsoft .net Framework comes in various versions that build up on each other. The current versions that are mostly used by software developers are the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 with their respective Service Packs.

A user with .net Framework 3.5 installed will also have the versions 3.0 and 2.0 on his computer whereas someone with the Microsoft .net Framework 3.0 will only have version 2.0 installed as well.

The concept is not that hard to grasp but it is still confusing as to why so many different .net Framework versions are installed on the computer. That’s where the .net Version Detector (via Raymond) comes into play.

The portable software scans the computer system for installed .net Framework components and displays the results in a list. It will also list the root directory of the Microsoft .net Framework on the computer system and provide download links to versions that have not been installed yet.

This software makes the detection easier. Experienced users could also look in the System Control Panel and see which versions of the .net Framework are installed there which will give the same information except for the root directory and the download links.

I lately tried to uninstall the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 from my system only to find out that I could not do it. The uninstallation program told me that other applications installed on my computer were depending on that Microsoft .net Framework 2.0 and Microsoft was displaying the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91126 to a Microsoft support page for uninstalling Microsoft .net Framework 3.0.

While that did not help I looked through my installed programs to find out which applications could depend on the Framework and the only other programs that I could come up with were the other Microsoft .net Frameworks that were installed on my system. Both the Microsoft .net Framework 3 and 3.5 were also installed on the computer.

I decided to uninstall the other two Frameworks and the only that I could uninstall was the last one, the Framework 3.5. Once that was uninstalled I was able to uninstall the Framework 3.0 and finally, after that I was able to remove the Microsoft .net Framework 2.0.

It seems that the newer Microsoft .net Frameworks depend on older versions that are also installed on the computer. The only viable choice you have if you want to uninstall an older version is to uninstall the newer versions as well and install them again after the old one has been uninstalled.

My system felt a bit sluggish after starting the installation of a new application and a quick check of the task manager revealed a process named mscorsvw.exe that was running on my system using nearly 40% of my CPU. I never heard about that file before and a quick check on the Internet revealed that it was related to the Microsoft .net Framework.

I never experienced the behavior on my old computer though and it seemed as if the process would not go away on its own. It was there, eating my CPU cycles even after quitting the program installation.

Apparently mscorsvw.exe is precompiling .NET assemblies in the background which can take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes and then some more for low priority assemblies. So the easiest way to get through it is by sitting it out.

If you want to get rid of it completely immediately you could issue the command ngen.exe executequeueditems. Ngen.exe is located in the Microsoft .net Framework directory in the Windows dir.

It feels like I’m updating my computer every day in the last weeks. Microsoft issued yet another two security patches for Internet Explorer and the .net framework that can be downloaded from Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-040 – Critical and Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-024 – Critical. Both security patches are updated to patches that had been released before, one of them just a few weeks ago.

The Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer patches Internet Explorer 6 and newer versions of Internet Explorer. If the user visits a specially prepared website an attacker can gain the same rights on the Windows system as the user who is currently logged into the system. While this does not affect other browsers and to a lesser extent users who do not use administrative accounts it is still recommended to update the software immediately.

The Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution patch fixes three security vulnerabilities. Two of them allow remote code execution and one information disclosure. It is again advised to update the system immediately to fix those security holes.
