Many websites on the Internet use pagination. This includes all major search engines like Google Search or Bing, blogs like Ghacks or websites that provide access to media like Youtube. Pagination is used to limit the time it takes to load a website and to well arrange it for the visitor.

The main problem with pagination is that it limits the amount of content on each page forcing the user to click on one of the buttons to be taken to the next or previous page of the website to access new content. Some extensions and scripts are available that automatically load the new content once the user reaches the end of the page.

Another alternative is provided by the SiteFlow bookmarklet. The bookmarklet recognizes the headlines of the active page (which would be the titles here at Ghacks for example) and displays them in an overlay on top. It offers previous and next buttons which will load previous or next pages of the website both in its interface but also on the screen.

A click on a headline will take the user right to the beginning of the article.

Keyboard shortcuts are available to perform the following operations:

Go to next page [right arrow key]

Go to previous page [left arrow key]

Return to first page [Shift Home]

Skip to last page [Shift End]

Jump to next headline [CTRL down arrow]

Jump to previous headline [CTRL up arrow]

The keyboard shortcuts to flip pages come in handy in many occasions as it only takes one key to perform the action. SiteFlow is compatible with many modern web browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and Safari.

A few months ago, Mozilla generated lots of buzz through its Geode extension, which locates users through the WiFi access point they were using. Other popular tools have similar features, such as ‘Locate me’ on iPod Touches.

So, a very interesting question is how does such technology work?

They consult a service called Skyhook Wireless. They drive around settlements in several countries and record the GPS co-ordinates of where they pick up certain wireless access points, so when users send the access point’s MAC to them, it can return the co-ordinates. Many areas aren’t covered but if you would still like to use it, and let others use it, one can manually add details to the system. The same system is used to correct erroneous listings.

Many services already make use of WiFi-based location services.

For example, GPS units may struggle to provide an accurate location indoors or in an urban environment, but Skyhook Wireless doesn’t have this problem. Software like Google Maps on the iPhone use WiFi-based location in such scenarios.

Several online websites also use WiFi-based location services to return information based on the locality. Some are social networking, like brightkite and Fire Eagle to local search, although these services tend to be American. MyLoki is another service which relies on geolocation, and this allows location data to be exported to RSS feeds, Facebook or even Twitter. It can also grab data from ‘channels’ and plot things nearby on a map. These ‘channels’ include everything from Starbucks coffee shops to geotagged photos, Yelp reviews and cinemas.

Google Gears uses its own geolocation service, which websites like ITN use, but this is much worse than Geode/Skyhook, being accurate for me to about 150 miles instead of 15 meters!

Skyhook-based locations are built into the iPhone, the Opera web-browser and Mozilla Geode.

Privacy concerns are put to ease as data is only sent if you confirm the website can have access to it, and the software lets you specify how accurate a location you’re willing to send.

The idea of geolocation and WiFi positioning is fantastic. Eventually, it will allow you to open your laptop and then share your location with others, should you choose, or find the nearest restaurant in a distant city!

Gmail quicklings is a new feature rolled out in Google Labs for Gmail which enables you to create some links for frequents searches, but it can be used for much more. Not all of you have this feature yet, so if you don’t see any “Labs” option in your settings, try navigating to this link and you should see it. I couldn’t find a way to enable this in my Google Apps email account, but I’m sure it will be rolled out there soon too.

Once you have quick links enabled, all you need to do is create some custom searches. Now let’s see what you can do here. For example I get a lot of comments on some of my Youtube videos and I like to take a look at them and keep track. However I don’t like them clogging up my inbox, so I have a filter that archives them right away. I could create a filter for the comments, even a filter for comments on separate videos, but I can also search for them, and create a quick link to that search page by clicking “add a quick link” to the side. The major advantage of this method is that you don’t need to create a lot of labels. I find that labels are great for organizing, but if you use too many, it’s the same as not using them at all.

You can use these quick links for much more than just listing comments. Since you can list any search page, why not list all the video’s you’ve received either by attachement or from youtube? Just create a search for these items and add them to your quick links. This can be of great help if you’ve been emailing with a collegue and you know he sent you the traffic analysis, but can’t remember when and where. Just create a quick link to all doc files sent by that person and you can browse through the files easily.

I just found a great Firefox extension while browsing Lifehacker, a small addon that will add a bar in place of the default, quite unuseful bar, and let you access features in other Google services right there.

iGoogleBar ads the favicons of many Google services like Gmail, Google Calendar, Reader, even Documents, Notebook and Web Albums. What makes it really cool though is that you can access features from the bar, via a drop down menu. Clicking the calendar will yield a list of event and things to do, found in your calendar.

The unread emails and unread Reader items count is especially useful, you now only need to visit these services when you know there’s something to see. Yes, there are other ways to navigate easily other productive plugins and desktop applications that can show you unread mail for example, but this is unobtrusive, replaces something less useful, so even if you use it only now and again it may be worth the download.
