In this day and age, very few people have not heard of Myspace. Myspace is a social networking website. MySpace users create their own webpages and then in turn, invite “friends” who can create their own MySpace pages. This creates a huge network of people linked together by Myspace pages. MySpace is also used by many different people from your everyday person to celebrities and even politicians.

Myspace was launched in August of 2003 as a way to compete with the website Friendster which had launched in 2002. It only took 10 days to get Myspace off the ground and on the Internet. In the beginning, the first users were actual Myspace employees and they held contests to see who could get the most users signed up. Many of the employees were also eUniverse users already, so they quickly got the nearly 20-million eUniverse users to sign up to Myspace which very quickly moved it to the top of the social networking sites.

Because the website was doing so well, the owners initially thought they could possibly charge for the service. However, this idea was quickly overruled as they realized that keeping the service free would help in attracting and keeping more users.

The MySpace login page is located directly at the main MySpace page.

The MySpace login requires the user’s email address and password with options to request a new password if the password cannot be remembered. There are also options to log into the mobile version of MySpace to speed up things.

A Myspace webpage contains what is called a user profile. The user profile consists of the blog where the user can tell people about themselves, upload videos they enjoy and tell people what they doing at the time, also called their status updates. They can even add mood status updates along with an emoticon that shows if they are happy, sad, etc.

Below the profile section is the comment section. This is probably one of the most favorite sections of Myspace users because here is where your friends can leave you comments or links to others website or just to say hello and see how the Myspace user is doing.

Another favorite section of Myspace users is the music section. This is where you can add your favorite music along with a music player. When a Myspace friend comes to the webpage, the music player automatically launches and starts playing the music. This is a nice feature because it allows the Myspace user to create and share their favorite music through music playlists.

Bulletins are another feature of Myspace pages. A bulletin is a way of posting a comment or event that the Myspace user would like to post to all of their friends. They are often used to send favorite emails or chain letters. Bulletins are deleted within 10 days.

Another feature of Myspace is the ability to join Groups. It’s a great way for the Myspace user to join groups that he or she is interested in along with other Myspace users. There they can discuss their interests on their own message board and webpage.

Myspace users can also post their favorite videos from Youtube. On Myspace, the user has the ability to embed their favorite Youtube video right into the webpage. This is a nice feature because the other friends can play the video without having to click on a link to get to it. MySpace is without doubt one of the most popular social networking websites on the Internet even though some say it has been in decline ever since Facebook took off. MySpace login problems are as common a problem as on other websites with this amount of users. Like every big website they are a common target for phishing attacks that try to steal MySpace login data to get into the accounts. There are on the other hand quite a few options to protect a MySpace account from being phished or hacked.

But before we delve into those possibilities we should take a look at the default MySpace login process. The MySpace login form is located on the entry page of the social network. Users who want to log into MySpace need to provide their username (usually the email address they signed up with) and password to do so. A password recovery option is provided on the same page in case the password of the MySpace account was lost or forgotten.

Probably the best way to log into MySpace is by the use of a script or browser plugin that does it automatically. This not only solves the problem of forgetting passwords but will also take care of phishing websites that try to lure the user on a similar looking MySpace login page to grab the user data.

Last Pass is a password manager and web form filler for Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. It can generate secure passwords, store them in encrypted form in its database and perform automatic logins on websites. A MySpace login cannot be easier and more secure than that.

Users who prefer a lightweight solution can take a look at various Greasemonkey userscripts which also provide the option to automatically log into MySpace accounts. Users who do not want to install an add-on or use a userscript should bookmark the MySpace page and open it from there whenever they want to visit MySpace. This prevents most phishing attacks that fake the Myspace login page.

MySpace Music Download Software

Here is a quick lightweight software program for downloading music from MySpace. The software MySpace Grab makes it easy to listen to and download any song that is listed on MySpace. To do so only the url of the band page or page on MySpace is needed. The software program scans the url by opening a connection to MySpace and displays the songs that are listed on that page after the analysis of the contents.

The user of MySpace Grab can then double-click on any listed song to listen to it. The small window that opens contains a small embedded music player that is similar to those found on many websites and a big download button. Pressing the download button will immediately open a save file dialog window which can be used to save the selected song on the local computer.

The process is pretty straightforward and great for saving the occasional song from MySpace. It becomes long-winded if the user wants to download several songs from MySpace as it would mean to repeat the double-click song, click download button in new window process over and over again.

Selected urls can be added to favorites in the software program to access them faster and easier the next time the program is started. MySpace Grab is a free 400 Kilobyte download that is compatible with all Microsoft Windows operating systems from Windows 95 to Windows Vista.

Myspace Music Download

Here is a very ingenious method of download music from Myspace. It is actually one of the easiest methods to download the music. All that is needed is a web browser which makes the method universal independently from the operating system.

Start by visiting the Myspace website and locate a page with a music player. Those are usually band profile pages at Myspace. The music download can then be initiated by copying and pasting the url of that Myspace profile page into the web form at File2HD.

Check the “I have read and agree to the terms of service” box and click the Get Files button. The web service will analyze the Myspace page and display all links and files that are contained on it including the music files of the music player.

The list that is compiled will be huge. Look for the entries Featured Playlist (Standard Quality) and Original Version (High Quality). Those will usually contain the direct links to the mp3 files on the Myspace page. To download any of them simply right-click a song and select Save As or Save from the menu.

Social Network Status Generator

Have we come this far already? Desperate times require desperate measures it seems. To impress, one has to be witty. This is especially hard on social networks with millions of other users who want to impress as well.

According to the developers of Generatus their product is ideal for the imaginatively challenged. Generatus is a social network status generator which turns the overly repeated and boring statuses like “Martin is working”, “Drinking Coffee” or “Jim is visiting his grandparents” into something witty and original.

Simplicity was probably the main design idea behind Generatus. Males can simply hit the Generate button while females will have to click on the female to generate female statuses (not sure if there is really that much difference to justify that, it is probably used to make use of the right grammatical person in the sentences). It is also possible to use tags to get a status that relates to the selected tags.

The program generates statuses like “Fred missed winning the lottery by only SIX numbers”, “Fred was schizophrenic once, but we’re better now!” or “Susi is pushing up daises”.

Judging from those “witty” statuses it is probably fair to assume that Generatus aims at the school – college kid fraction of the population.

Video Crawler – A Multimedia Search Engine

Video Crawler is AT&T’s multimedia search engine. The service is currently in Beta and provides access to videos and other multimedia files of more than 1600 different websites including the popular ones like Youtube, MySpace or Dailymotion.

The search engine is indexing the contents of those websites and providing a search engine so that users can search all sites for multimedia content at once. The search results are therefor a combination of all multimedia portals. Results can be filtered by media type (video, audio, radio, games..) and sorted by factors like popularity, relevancy or rating.

Content that has been selected will be played in the main interface which uses independent blocks that can be moved around. It is for instance possible to search for additional videos while one is already playing. The multimedia content is simply embedded in the site which means that the basic controls of the site’s players is available.

One major nuisance of the multimedia search engine is that only four results are displayed per page which could mean some serious page flipping when searching for popular terms.

Registered users receive additional options like the ability to save or embed multimedia files or build a personal multimedia collection. The service is showing promise. It’s a little bit slow when it comes to displaying results to the user which quickly becomes annoying considering that only four results per page are displayed.

On the other hand: If you are looking for a way to search hundreds of sites for multimedia content you might want to give Video Crawler a try.

MySpace Music Venture

No matter what your opinion is on MySpace, the announcement of the MySpace Music store and service is big news.

Perhaps the real question should be, “Why so long?” After all MySpace was the place to be for Death metal bands and sincere singer/songwriters for the last 5 years. In fact it still is the place to be, however the quality of the MySpace music services has been really lagging when compared to other services.

The last year seems to have been spent with MySpace fixing up many of the issues which turned people off the service and onto Facebook. A more consistent, redesigned website, applications, MySpace IM, auto-playback of profile songs turned off by default and other annoyances.

Growth has still been flat now for the last 6 months and MySpace is the initiative News Corp hopes will bring MySpace back into the spotlight and boost revenues.

MySpace Music is a joint venture between MySpace, Amazon and the three major music labels; Sony, Universal and Warner Music. Essentially music will be offered for unlimited free streaming and will the service will introduce new social features for music sharing such as features borrowed from Muxtape (shut down by the RIAA) and playlist creation and sharing.

For song downloads music can be bought through Amazon’s music service which provides DRM free music downloads, although only to America at the moment, I don’t know if this will change with the launch.

The service will be very prominently sponsored by huge companies such as Toyota, McDonalds and State Farm.

Whatever your opinion of MySpace is (and my own isn’t that favourable) this launch is very significant. It goes a long way towards providing users with music discovery and streaming tools, it gives greater exposure for Amazon’s mp3 download service which in turn will perhaps provide some decent competition to iTunes. It may also turn around MySpace’s lagging growth and provide some decent competition to Facebook’s seemingly unstoppable growth.

I’m watching with interest.

Add Pictures To MySpace

The following article explains how to add pictures to MySpace. The process itself is not overly complicated and everyone should be able to follow the steps. Please leave a comment if you have any questions about the process.

There are basically two possibilities to add pictures to MySpace. The first is to upload pictures from a computer to MySpace and use the code presented after uploading them to add them to the MySpace profile or blog post. The second option is to embed images that are hosted on other websites.

If you want to upload pictures directly to MySpace you need to know the requirements. Pictures may not contain nudity, violence, copyrighted material or other offensive imagery. The picture can have a maximum size of 5 Megabytes and has to be a jpg, gif, bmp, png or tiff.

The process to add pictures to MySpace would be the following. The user would click on Profile > My Photos to load his photo album. The photo album displays pictures that have already been added to MySpace. It contains a link at the top to Upload Photos. A click on that link opens the form where the user can add pictures to MySpace. This is done by browsing the computer of the user for pictures. Holding the CTRL key makes it possible to add multiple pictures at once to the upload form.

A click on Next opens the next options window which gives the user the choice to upload the pictures to an existing photo album or to create a new one for those images.

A click on Upload uploads the pictures to MySpace. A progress bar is shown during upload. The next button leads to another optional menu where the pictures can be tagged. Tagging makes it easier to find the images later on but is not required at all.

All pictures are then shown in the MySpace My Albums menu.

A click on an image loads that image in higher resolution and displays two links to the image on the right side. The important link is entitled “Photo code: copy it to your profile”. A click on Copy copies the code to the clipboard. This code can be pasted into the profile or blog post easily. Simply right-click the text area where you want to add the picture and select Paste.

Add Pictures To MySpace

The second option is to add pictures to MySpace that are hosted externally. Users can use image hosts like Imageshack to upload their images and paste them from there to MySpace. This has the advantage that the images can have a greater size than those posted at MySpace.

Imageshack posts all sorts of links to the image after uploading it to their service. A good choice are the thumbnail links at the top or the direct link at the bottom. Just click in the line that you want to use, right-click it and select copy. Then go to Myspace to add the picture and paste it there.

Make sure to test your page before publishing it to be able to correct errors that might have occurred.

Imo.im Adds Skype And MySpace Support

Imo.im offers a way to connect to various Instant Messengers using their website or a client that can be downloaded and is currently available for Windows. Supported are many popular Instant Messenger networks like MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, AIM and ICQ.

The Imo.im team was rather busy since my last review of the service and has added two additional services. The first is the addition of Skype. The user can login using his Skype user data and will see a tab with his buddies and their status. He can chat with his buddies and even call them without difficulties. That feature is both available in the web client and the local software program that is downloaded to the computer.

The only restriction is currently that outbound calls are not supported. The second addition is that of MySypace IM. If I’m honest I did not even know that something like MySpace IM existed until I found the reference at the Imo.im website.

It looks like Skype with a MySpace plugin. Still, if anyone uses that he can also use that at Imo.im. I really like the Skype addition, mainly because Skype is the only service that I use regularly from the ones that are supported. Could be handy to use it to make a quick call or write a message to a friend.

Dig Digsby, You Have Good Reason to

Have you heard of Digsby yet? If not, it’s about time you do. Digsby is a multi-network chat client. Doesn’t sound like that big a deal? Use Pidgin or Miranda already? Well Digsby has a couple more cards up its sleeve, along with your Chat accounts Digsby also aggregates social network accounts and email. At the moment the list of supported services isn’t huge but you will be able to talk on AIM, Jabbar, Gtalk, Yahoo, ICQ and MSN. You can use just about any email account including Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail. Supported social networks at this point are MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.

It’s still a beta product but significant changes have been made over the last few months including new features, optimisation and bug fixes. It’s not perfect but it’s very usable. If you’re a fan of MSN for all the ‘nudge’ and ‘wink’ type features then this isn’t for you. If you like the sparse chat style of Gtalk then this is, at the moment Digsby is pretty simple when it comes to chat features.

One great thing about Digsby is that you can chat to people on Facebook Chat through the client, a unique feature for Digsby till a few weeks ago when some other clients began to get it as well. Another great thing about Digsby is the ability to combine contacts different accounts all into one by merging and creating a alias, makes it much easier keeping track of people.It’s also very customizable and you can get various skins and change the layout around to how you like. By creating a Digsby account you can synchronize it across multiple locations and computers and keep all your settings. A very promising application and worth checking out!

Myspace Private Profile Picture Leak

Myspace we got a problem, a huge one that is. You might have heard about the vulnerability that allowed anyone to view pictures that have been set to private at Myspace ? You might have also heard that the vulnerability got fixed pretty fast by Myspace. Unfortunately though not fast enough because someone was able to run an automated script that leeched the pictures of more than 44000 private profiles before the security hole was fixed.

And those pictures, with a zipped size of more than 17 Gigabyte, made their way to a very famous torrent site, named The Pirate Bay. It has been uploaded on January 20th to the website and is currently having six seeders and more than a thousand leecher who download the package.

The story has not been posted on big news sites yet but it will surely pick up speed once more blogs report about this. This once again confirms my position of not posting pictures and other personal information on the Internet..

Snapfoo Mobile Photo Blogging

Richard from Windows Observer was so nice to send me an invitation to the mobile photo blogging community Snapfoo which is currently in beta and invite only. With Snapfoo you can easily send pictures taken with your mobile phone to your Snapfoo profile and integrate it with other web 2.0 sites such as Myspace, Facebook or Twitter as well.

Everyone may access your profile page on Snapfoo and look at the recent images that you send in. Photos can not only be added by mobile phone but also by uploading them via email or with your computer. If you want to post something fast you might choose the mobile phone option, if you have more time at hand you better choose email or computer upload to save some money in case you are not running an unlimited data plan.

Both email accounts and cell phone numbers have to be added to Snapfoo before you can begin to use them. The creator of the picture can write a short description that will be added to the profile page and all other registered visitors can leave comments.

I think Snapfoo is a great idea, something unique that has not appeared yet on the Internet. The integration with popular web 2.0 communities makes it more attractive and it could very well become the next Twitter. It’s nothing for me though because I do not like to reveal my life to the public.

I have five Snapfoo invites. The first five to comment on this blog requesting an invite will get it.

Add Hard Drive Songs to Your Myspace Profile

I have a Myspace profile, thanks to a friend who had his own band. There are a bunch of sites that have fancy comments as well as cool layouts you can use to customize your profile. All in all, I’m fairly satisfied with Myspace.

The one thing that bothered me though was that I could never add a song of my choice to my profile. I’d stumble upon a favorite artist or band but they just wouldn’t have the song I was looking for. Luckily, plenty of people feel the same way, which has led to a fix for this ‘problem’.

This is where Profile Pitstop comes in. This site helps you add songs from your hard drive to your Myspace profile. In the first step, you select the basic look for your player. Basic GUIs range from a cassette or walkman to an Ipod-like interface or just a simple playlist.

Once you decide on a player, you can go ahead and customize it to your liking. This is a great option because you can make your player fit in with the rest of your profile layout. At this stage, you can also decide if you want your songs to begin playing the moment someone visits your page. In addition, you can specify if you want your songs to be played in order or randomly.

The third step involves actually putting the songs into your player. Unfortunately, Profile Pitstop itself does not allow you to upload files directly. You need to upload them to a file storage site and then paste the URLs on the Profile Pitstop page. The key here is that your uploaded file should have a link ending in ‘mp3’. The site itself recommends FileDen for uploading but you can use whatever you like.

Alternatively, you can add links from a site like Skreemr. Just do a search for any song and then paste the link into the Profile Pitstop page. The only downside is that you have no control over how long the song stays online.

Once your playlist is ready, the next page asks you to login or if you would like to register. Registration is not compulsory but if you do register, you will be able to edit your playlist, as well as make changes to your player itself. If you don’t want to register, you can simply click on ‘Skip sign-up’.

In the final step, all you have to do is copy the code which appears and then paste it wherever you want, in your Myspace profile. Or, you can type in your Myspace login details, select a particular section and the player will automatically be placed there. In case you skipped the sign-up, I recommend you copy and paste this code in a text file somewhere on your computer.

This method is the ideal way for someone to add a bunch of songs that are created personally. Maybe you want to relieve a drunken karaoke session or you’d prefer to have the music from your kid’s school recital. You could even record some voice clips and put those up!

Download Avis from Youtube and other video sites

All of my friends hate the flv format that Youtube and other social video sites such as dailymotion and break use to show video content on their websites. Most download managers, like the Firefox extension Video Downloader, offer the flv files as downloads which most multimedia players do not support at all. You could add a flv plugin to add flash video support to your media player but there is an easier solution to this.

The website viddownloader converts the videos to avi before it displays a download link. This is probably not the most elegant solution if you want to download hundreds of videos but it works fine if you only want to download a few videos. You supply the url of the video that you want to download and viddownloader does the rest automatically and displays a download link afterwards. It supports the following sites at the moment: Youtube, Break, Dailymotion, Myspace and Pornotube.

The conversion took just a few minutes and depends on the length of the video mainly. Not sure if video conversions are queued or how viddownloader handles several requests at the same time. Download speeds were fine as well. I was able to download with about 100K which is ok for videos of that size. The flv video was about 7 megabytes in size while the converted avi was almost triple that size with 19 megabytes.

Website banned ? Try the encrypted url

There are many ways to ban a website from a network. You can ban its domain name, the IP address where it is hosted, or through a keyword check might check the content in real time and decide not to display it. This makes it extremely hard to show how to bypass the ban and access the website that you want to access. It is however still usual to only ban the domain name – the url – of a website which leaves us some outs to access it without using proxies and the like.

There are actually several ways to replace a url with a encrypted one. The result in the end will be the same but it might be possible to bypass the ban using the encrypted url. A fine tool that displays all variants of encrypted urls is url encryptor. Just enter a url that you want to visit and it displays all encrypted forms (and others) on its page. You can then try and access the website that is banned using those urls and you will be surprised how often this actually works.

I think an example would be fine. Let us take myspace.com for example. If myspace is banned you could use the following urls to access it anyway:

Base64 (works in Firefox and Opera)
Hex (works in IE and Opera)
IP (works in Firefox, IE and Opera)
Dword (works in Firefox, IE and Opera)
Octal (works in Firefox, IE and Opera)
HexDec (works in Firefox and IE)
Mixed 1 (works in Firefox and IE)
Mixed 2 (works in IE and Opera)

Another method that could work would be to access http://myspace.com/ instead of http://www.myspace.com/

How to Download Songs from Myspace

It seems that someone found out a way to create download links to the mp3 files that one can listen to on the profile pages of the bands that have a myspace website. The script to decode the myspace url and extract the mp3 links is working well and uses Ajax for ease of use.

All you need to to is supply a website or profile page of a band and the script automatically decodes the information and displays links to all songs that can be listened to on the website. Myspace randomly generates the links every minute which means that sometimes the decode button has to be pressed more often than once.

You are free to provide the short url of the bands page (ie. www.myspace.com/colbiecaillat) or the long one with parameters wich leads to the same website (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=8777613). Both links can be decoded and the songs can be downloaded by right-clicking them and selecting to save the link as..

Due to popular demand I uploaded the script to my webspace. Use it to download songs from myspace.

Download Mp3 from Myspace

You can use url hacks to download mp3 files from myspace. Why would someone want to use an url hack if a much easier method exists ? All you need is the freeware MySpace MP3 Gopher. Once installed you paste a friend id into the mp3 gopher and activate the button get song listing. Myspace MP3 Gopher then connects to myspace and downloads a listing of all available songs from that friend id.

All that is left to do is double click on song and click on download or preview. Download will immediatly download the song to your hard drive while preview plays the song. This method is free, it is easy and fast. The tool is designed for Microsoft Windows computers but they also have a online version on their website for all other operating systems. You need one additional dll to preview mp3 songs that should be placed in the same folder as the executable. Did I mention that this program can be run from any location because it does not install itself and does not change your settings ?

Finding a friend Id might be a little bit tricky – I will explain the basic concept here. You visit a webpage that has a music player and some songs listed that you can listen to: For example this one called zombienation. You see four songs that are ready to play but no friend id on that page. What you do is you click on a link that reveals the friend id – for example Pictures or Videos. The next page lists the friend id in the url, just copy that number and paste it into myspace mp3 gopher and you are ready to rock..

Random Myspace Image

I wrote a little php script that displays a random myspace image when you enter a eight digit image id from myspace. The sweat thing about this is that it is able to display private images as well. All you need to do is enter a eight digit number and it will calculate the image location and display the image, if an image with such an id exists of course. I might improve the script to scan image ranges or add an random button to it to make it more user friendly.

The idea behind this script came originally from jacob de hart who discovered this security vulnerability and wrote a nice little explanation about it on his website. Let me know if you are interested in an improved version, I might be tempted to code one.

View Hidden Comments on Myspace

Viewing hidden comments on myspace was not possible for some time because the developers fixed the security holes that allowed everyone to do so. A new url hack to view hidden comments came to light a few days ago and what can I say: It works fine and it is really easy to use.

You need to know the friend id of the user whose private comments you want to see, if you have it you simply paste the following url into your browsers address bar and append the friend id to it:

Myspace will probably disable this method of viewing hidden comments pretty soon so you better hurry up and take fast look at the profiles that you want to snoop on. A way to view pictures on a private profile is to append the friend id to the following url

1. MySpace Code: How to hide personal information

Click on Edit Profile and enter the following code in the About Me section.

2. MySpace Tip: How to hide and make a profile private

Just change your birthday so that you are younger than 16 years of age.

3. MySpace Code: How to hide and make a profile private

Click on Edit Profile and enter the following code in the About Me section.

4. MySpace Code: How to hide comments

This will hide comments but not comments and friends.
