If you listen to music on Youtube you might sometimes be interested in the lyrics. Sometimes the uploaders include the lyrics but more often than not they do not.

The Google Chrome extension YouTube Music Video Lyrics displays music lyrics directly on the page so that it is not necessary to open another tab in your web browser to find the lyrics.

The extension works automatically. It tries to find the lyrics for the active Youtube video. The icon in the Chrome toolbar changes to indicate that lyrics have been found.

A click on the icon displays the lyrics so that they can be read while listing to the music video.

The extension was able to identify the song name correctly most of the time so that the right lyrics were displayed. It sometimes happened that the wrong lyrics were displayed.

YouTube Music Video Lyrics unfortunately has no option to perform a manual search for the right lyrics in this case. It is nevertheless a very handy, unobtrusive extension that should be beneficial to many Youtube visitors.

Songs by popular artists like Lady Gaga, the Beastie Boys or Michael Jackson show now up with a Vevo tagging that is asking users to visit the Vevo website. Those Youtube users who wonder why should read the announcement over at the official Youtube blog. Google has apparently struck a deal with those record labels which combines Youtube technology and the record labels catalog at the new destination.

While it might make sense to build a new service that is specialized in music videos its current incarnation is everything but perfect. Here are a few reasons why:

• Vevo is only available to users from the United States. The funny thing is that it is still possible to view those music videos at Youtube even if you are not from the United States.
• It seems that the transfer to Vevo has erased previous comments and ratings of some videos.
• Vevo seems to come with additional advertisement and a few features like displaying song lyrics and artist profiles

The strategy is not really clear at this point. It could be that the parties have planned to move all of the music videos completely to Vevo so that Youtube users move to the new site for their music fix. That is, if they are from the US.

TubeRadio is another service that makes use of that principle. It offers an interface that resembles that of Apple’s iTunes software. Here is how it works. It begins by entering a song or artist into the form on the homepage of the service. It is alternatively possible to pick one of the artists or genres that are prominently displayed on the homepage.

TubeRadio will search its database for albums that match the song or artist. All of the albums that are found will be displayed with their album cover and name.

Albums are selected with a left mouse click. It is possible to select multiple albums. TubeRadio will then perform a search on Youtube for those songs in the selected albums which are then added to playlists from where they can be played. Registered users have options to save playlists so that they can reopen them whenever they re-visit the website. Another option is to go back to the search and add additional albums by performing new searches. It is furthermore possible to search directly on Youtube instead of the discography search option.

The music is played on the TubeRadio website with a small video being displayed. Basic controls like switching songs, changing the playback volume, repeating, muting or shuffling songs are available. Users can also look at lyrics, biographies or similar songs (if available) while listening to the music.

There is also an option to display albums and artists that are currently in the charts to listen to these songs instead. The only aspect that users might criticize is something that all of these services have to cope with: the quality of the Youtube videos. It can happen that the service does not retrieve the song by the artist but a cover that is performed by another artist.

The first method is a search that can be used to find exact matches for artists, songs, albums and so on. Youtube has one of the largest collections of music videos and it usually is pretty easy to find the music that you are looking for. Music that has been discovered can be added to playlists which can be saved after a free account registration at the official website. This is a great way of creating lots of playlists that cover all the songs and genres that the user likes.

The second option that is offered by Muziic is pre-generated playlists that can be accessed from the sidebar of the music player. Those playlists are sorted by genre. About 30 or so genres are available which do contain one or multiple playlists that can be selected for playback.

The video going along with the song can be displayed in the music player if that is something that the user wants to view as well while listening to the song. Besides the playlists that are offered users can import so called channels that have been created by other Muziic users into the application. Channels are also categorized in genres making it easy to pick a suitable one.

The music player is quite interesting as it uses a concept similar to cloud computing to provide access to a large collection of music to users. Users benefit from this by being able to search and access that large database and by saving disk space as virtually no local disk space is required. The only possible drawbacks are the quality of the songs which are definitely not high (but acceptable) quality and the chance that songs vanish if the videos get deleted on Youtube.

The music videos are sorted alphabetically by artist and song name. A click on an artist will load the music video on the same page which means that everything is happening on the same page.

So what can you expect from the website? You find all popular (pop) songs of the decade on that website, from A-Ha with Take On Me over Duran Duran’s Wild Boys to ZZ Tops ZZ Top – Gimme All Your Lovin.

Most songs are pop songs but you find the occasional hard rock or heavy metal track among the list. Manowar and Megadeath are listed among others.

It is a nice trip back for those who grew up with the songs and a great way for young people to listen to 80′s music. The main advantage of this site over going to Youtube directly and searching for 80′s songs is the one page interface.

The great thing about this service is that it is still there, unlike other services on the Internet that come and go. You can alternatively head over to YouTube right away to find 80s music there both in their original versions and with original music videos as well as covers of songs.

Youtube Lyrics changes that. It’s a Greasemonkey script that adds a lyric element to each Youtube video. A container Lyrics will be displayed beneath the Video description and will show the lyrics of that music video if expanded. The title of the video should at least contain the song title of the song.

A drop down menu provides access to different lyrics databases on the Internet and you can try to find the lyrics in the other databases if the default one does not reveal any results.

I would not be able to explain otherwise why some bands are not found although their music videos are available at Youtube. After creating a channel you have the option to create another one or view the already created channels. If you choose the second option you see your channels on the left side and videos that have been found at Youtube on the right one.

You may now play each video, delete selected ones or add more videos to the channel. The most interesting option is of course the play video option. It lets you view the selected video, change the name, artist or album it is showing and rate the video and the artist separately. A new video is automatically loaded after the current one finished its playback. It is also possible to select one of the next upcoming videos which are shown on the left side with thumbnails, song name and artist name.

Aggrega is a nice service which is able to distinguish itself from Pandora by adding a visual component. The creators need to add more artists and songs to the database or improve the search script that searches Youtube and finds the music videos. It is no problem to find well known artists such as Madonna, Blur or Silversun Pickups but it becomes problematic if you search for lesser known artists.

The interface makes it possible to either play one of the videos that are currently listed on the frontpage, search for a band or song or use the random button to generate a listing of random clips pulled from the database. If you do search for a band or song you should make sure that you use phrases to match the songs. If I wanted to find Fear of the Dark from Iron Maiden I would enter the title and not only fear in the search field.

The interface is loading pretty fast and the songs play perfect, even the ones that I had problems with on Youtube itself. Great site, check it out.

It would take to long to list all bands that played there, I´am therefor simple directing you to the archive page of fabchannel to explore the website for yourself. My tips would be so far The Gathering which is a real nice Dutch band, Wir Sind Helden which is a modern German band and the Dutch Air Guitar Festival which is really nice to watch. 1500 Music Videos from the 80′s is a collection that contains many important videos from that time period. You can watch videos from bands like ABBA, Aha, Faith no More and Sting. Just click on one of the neatly categorized videos on the left and it will start playing in the main window. Enjoy.

You can alternative head over to music portals such as Last.fm for a list of music albums, songs, artists and radio stations that cover music of the 80s.

You can also combine both Last.fm and YouTube. First check out Last.fm for band and song names, and then head over to YouTube to type them to listen to those artists and songs, and even see the original music videos that have been created in the 80s.

Other sites may also aid in your quest for the best 80s music. 100 greatest songs of the 80s for instance is a good starting point. Please keep in mind though that top lists are always debatable. I suggest you use a search engine like Google or Bing to find more 80s top lists.

I suppose that the artistic value of the video valued higher than the music itself, I´am almost sure of that but one never knows. The first entry for instance looks more like it came right from the latest horror teen flick and does not look like a music video at all. But maybe its just not my type of.. ehm.. music ?
