Hard Links basically make it possible to access one file using multiple paths on the same volume while junctions provides the same functionality for directories with the addition that it can link directories on different local volumes of a computer.

A practical example would be to store files and directories in a different location than they have to reside in. This could be the Firefox profile directory, a Skype directory or the Windows Documents and settings folder. You basically tell Windows to look into the original folder but also in the linked folder for files.

NTFS Link offers three ways of creating hard links and junctions. The first and probably easiest way is by dragging and dropping a file or folder with the right mouse button to another location. The others are by making use of the New parameter in the right-click menu in Windows Explorer while the last works by right-clicking on an empty folder only.

<span

It should however be noted that NTFS Links works best when run in pre-Vista operating systems as Windows Vista comes with its own possibilities to create symbolic links.

Mind Mapping Software Xmind

Linux

Mac

Operating Systems

Software

Windows

mind map

mind map software

mind mapping

mind mapping software

mind maps

multi-lingual

multi-os

Open Source

portable software

xmind
<guid

The mind mapping software comes with an impressive set of features that produce professional looking mind maps in short time. Here is a short explanation of the mind mapping concept. A mind map is a diagram representing ideas and related words that center around one central idea or word.

It is widely used to collect all aspects of a topic and put those aspects into relation. It could be about a company and all of its products, a website and its category or a tv series and its cast. Xmind can be used to create basic mind maps in minutes. It does come with advanced options to include images, relations, attachments, hyperlinks, notes, boundaries and structures to create advanced mind maps that can be used for presentations.

Xmind comes with the possibilities to share the mind map online but also enough options to export the mind map into another format like images, html or text. It is also possible to save the mind map as a template to reuse it for future projects.

There is only one negative aspect that has to be mentioned. The mind mapping software cannot be downloaded before the user creates an account at the website or uses an OpenId to log in. Bugmenot lists two accounts (bugger/bugger) that can be used to download the software. Users who plan to upload their mind maps should create their own account to avoid running into troubles. If you only want to use the software locally you can use the bugger/bugger account to download the software.

Xmind is the right choice if you are looking for a professional mind mapping software. Chance is that your operating system and language is supported by this highly flexible software program.

Windows Vista Taskbar Resize

Software

Windows

multi-lingual

portable software

taskbar resize

vista

vista taskbar

windows software

windows vista taskbar

windows-vista
<guid

One of the new visual changes to taskbar items is the height of each item. While it is possible to change the height of the Windows Vista taskbar it is not possible to change the height of individual items in the taskbar even after making enough room on the taskbar by resizing it.

Taskbar Resize Tool is a small program for Windows Vista that can alter the heights of individual items in the Windows Vista taskbar. The software requires the installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (<a

The software itself comes with a English and Chinese interface.

The software is portable and will display a slider after execution which can be used to change the height of the taskbar items.

<span

All settings will be reverted after a restart which is why the only option in the program interface is to add the application to system startup.

Print Management Software

Software

Windows

local print jobs

local printer

multi-lingual

print job

print management

Print Management Software

print software

remote print jobs

remote printer

remote queue manager

windows software
<guid

The personal edition of the print management software has a few limitations compared to the commercial software but it provides enough functionality to make it worth the installation.

The print management software displays the local and remote printers along with connected domains in the main interface. The status of each printer and the assigned print jobs are displayed next to each printer which provides a great overview. Selecting a printer in the left menu will display the print jobs with information about the name, computer, document and status of each print job.

A right-click on a print job will provide options to cancel, resume, restart and preview among other options. The print management software will display print job information such as the number of pages and copies, time and date, paper size, duplex mode and position in the queue among other information with the option to edit the properties of each print job.

<span

A click on the Resources tab will display information about ports, drivers, forms, monitors and processors. It is possible to configure print servers and ports with the print management software. It is for instance possible to open the driver’s manufacturer website to download drivers to add but also remove them.

Launch Software Automatically With Xecutor

Software

Windows

autoruns

launch software

multi-lingual

scheduler

software launch

software program

software scheduler

windows software

xecutor
<guid

Worse than that are the options to configure automatic software startups while the system is running. The Windows Scheduler is not really capable of bringing much choice into the process.

Enter Xecutor a multi-lingual (German, English and Spanish) software program that can be used to load software automatically at any time if the computer system is running. It can even import Windows autostart entries from both the Windows Registry and autostart file and include them in its own list although it is not recommended to import security software or system processes that way.

The main interface of Xecutor divides the applications into startup, shutdown and scheduler tabs which can be used to launch software automatically during startup, shutdown or user defined when the computer system is running.

<img

Executable files from the computer’s hard drive can be picked by using the file browser. It is possible to add parameters, to configure wait times and an option to minimize the software after launch.

<img

The day of the week the software should be launched can be configured. Applications can be set to only launch before or after a specific time. The Scheduler adds another option: The possibility to start an application at a specific time or in intervals. The last option is to add a question before and a message after execution.
