Up until now I have been mainly using the excellent CDex as a CD to mp3 ripper. The recent release of BonkEnc turned out to be the perfect situation to test another popular mp3 ripper and encoder.

BonkEnc can rip music from CDs but also encode music that is already on the computer system into various audio formats including mp3, flac, aac, mp4 or ogg vorbis. It takes only minimal user interaction to rip a CD with the default settings. The computer program will automatically try to identify the CD by retrieving data from free online databases. If the data is found it will automatically be written in the tags of the music files.

Music that the user wants to encode can be added using the built in file browser or by dragging and dropping folders or files into the interface. BonkEnc will display various information about each file including its name, length and file size. Selecting a file will expand on that and display title, artist, album, genre and other tag information which can be changed on the fly.

The selected encoder of choice is Lame Mp3 which can be used by selecting one of the various presets or a custom configuration. Each change aspects of the encoding process including the output quality and several advanced parameters.

BonkEnc is an excellent CD to Mp3 Ripper that can also be used to encode audio files. Users who are already using CDex do not have a real reason to switch to this application unless they experience troubles with the former.

If you are looking for an easy to use music encoder you might want to give the latest version of winLame a try. Beta 1 of the 2009 release has just been made available on the official homepage of the project adding several improvements to previous versions of the lame frontend for the Windows operating system.

The program supports a wide variety of music formats and can also rip audio CDs (with the option to pull information from Freebd) easily. Some of the more popular formats that are supported by winLame include mp3, ogg, acc, wma and flac. The process is divided into four windows starting with the selection of the music on the local computer system. A file browser or drag and drop can be used to add audio files from the computer system. The option to include CD tracks is also available in this first screen.

The second screen contains the output settings and parameters including the selection of the output module, the location where the files will be stored in and if a playlist should be created automatically.

The third step lists several presets that can be used to encode the music ranging from high quality hifi to best quality archiving or portable usage. Custom settings can be configured as well in this screen.

The final step will display encoding information and the progress. The wide variety of audio formats coupled with encoding presets make winLame a viable alternative for anyone looking for a solid audio encoder for the Windows operating system.

I sometimes want to cut mp3 audio files into separate parts, mainly because the single file is that large that it does not fit on my mp3 player. This is also useful to create mp3 ringtones who only use the first 30 seconds of a song anyway. It does work the other way round as well.

It is possible to combine several mp3 files as well which I like to do with audiobooks as well. A software that is able to do all of this and much more is Mp3 Direct Cut. It is also possible to alter the volume of the mp3 file.

What I like about MP3 Direct Cut is the ease of use. Cutting mp3 files for instance can be done with a few clicks only and all other options and functions are available that easily as well. New files are saved in an instance because the files do not need to be re-encoded.

When I bought my first mp3 player years ago I had to somehow transfer the music from my cd collection to my computer. I was lucky enough to find CDex pretty fast and I stick with it since then. It offers everything that I demand from an CD ripper, it´s fast, it checks CDDB for album and title information and is able to save the music in many formats including mp3 and wav. All you need is the program itself and the dll lame_enc.dll which you can download from rarewares.

You should check the options before you start your first ripping process. Select the Lame Encoder as your Encoder and define a bitrate for the mp3 files that you want to save. You need to add an email to the Remote CDDB tab if you want to use this service. This email is not checked at all, you might want to use a temporary email address. After that you put a music cd into your drive, CDex will retrieve the information but not the title and album information automatically.

You need to select CDDB and click on Read Remote CDDB. All titles and album information will be retrieved and displayed. Once this is done you extract one or all tracks of the CD as compressed audio (mp3 for instance). All titles will be saved to a dir defined in the options and you are ready to transfer the files to your mobile player.

It can´t be easier than that. Let me know if you are using a different tool.
