The game was called Mono and had such an addictive fascinating gameplay that I played it for endless hours. The creators of Mono developed a new game which is called Echoes that uses many of the addicting elements that made Mono famous. Echoes is an Asteroids clone on steroids. That is probably the best way to explain the basic principle of the game. The developers put it that way when they describe Echoes: "Yeah, it's a bit like Asteroids hyperactive, drug crazed brother displayed in blur-o-vision© and viewed through psychedelic sunglasses in a cheap nightclub."

Back then when I started writing articles for ghacks I was writing about a freeware game that blew my mind. That is probably the best way to explain the basic principle of the game. The developers put it that way when they describe Echoes: “Yeah, it’s a bit like Asteroids hyperactive, drug crazed brother displayed in blur-o-vision© and viewed through psychedelic sunglasses in a cheap nightclub.”

Echoes is freeware of course and has a size of about 8 megabytes packed. You can run it from any location. Once started you move your spaceship with the mouse and use the ASDW keys to point the gun in one of the four directions available. The first waves of asteroids are no problem and some leave power ups behind that replenish shields and add guns to the spaceship.

Echoes is probably not as addictive as Mono – nothing beats Mono, you know – but it comes pretty close. It has nice visuals, a good smooth gameplay and action that changes and gets faster with every asteroid that gets destroyed. Take a look, you will enjoy it.

Great Freeware Game Mono

Entertainment

Games

freeware game

mono
<guid

Mono is a freeware game that deserves to be mentioned here. It offers a nice gameplay, great music and the most important part, it is fun to play.

It can be described as a arcade shooter. Your goal is to change the color of the background from white to black / black to white by shooting at colored circles that leave traces of their color on the background and part into two smaller circles of the same color. They split several times before they finally vanish from the screen.

The circles sometimes leave extras that you can pick up to get better firepower or become invincible with. Its one of the greatest freeware shooters that I ever played, if you would like tot take a look for yourself head over to binaryzoo.com. Enjoy and let me know about your score. I made it to 80% on medium difficulty in my third try :P

Update: Mono does not give you time to rest. The game becomes increasingly fast paced, and it does not take long before the first color balls start shooting at your ship.

Users who start the game for the first time should check the options to make sure that their preferred input method is selected. The game sets it to joypad by default, which you should switch to mouse and keyboard if you do not have a joypad connected to your PC right now.

The game gets difficulty at around the 50% mark, when bullets start flying left and right, and you are starting to spend more time evading bullets and enemy ships than concentrating on firing on them. Autofire is enabled which means that you can still throw out lots of bullets even without aiming at particular balls on the screen.

I’d suggest you try to eliminate the smaller balls first to reduce the probability that they will shoot at you or that you fly into them as it will get crowded on the screen if you do not eliminate the smaller balls.
