The Network Monitor application has been designed for capturing and analysing of network traffic. The new version of Network Monitor added a few exciting features to the network monitoring software including the ability to add so called Experts – standalone applications – to the software which analyze data captured by Network Monitor.

Three Network Monitor Experts have been released so far, the last less than two weeks ago. Available are the Simple Search, Top Users and TCP Analyzer Experts. Here is a short summary of what these Experts do:

  • Simple Search Lets you search frames and comments for raw ASCII text case-insensitively or with regular expressions.
  • Top Users Lets you determine the heaviest users of network bandwidth.
  • TCP Analyzer This tool analyzes network traces of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections.

The Experts can be downloaded separately and need to be installed before they can be used. It is recommended to close the Network Monitor before installing the add-ons. The Experts become then available in the Experts menu on top of the program.

Microsoft Network Monitor is offered as a free download for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

The software program relies on Microsoft’s Network Monitor which has to be installed to capture the traffic.

A good practice would be to install the Microsoft Network Monitor first and Microsoft Visual Round Trip Analyzer second to avoid compatibility issues.

The web developer has to select an available network connection in Visual Round Trip Analyzer that he wants to analyze. A click on the Start Netmon button starts the Netmonitor application which will from then on record the traffic on the selected network.

The user would then have to load the website or run a batch file that would simulate that and stop Netmonitor afterwards. The traffic will automatically be analyzed by the Visual Round Trip Analyzer software and displayed in the program’s interface.

The main chart lists the opened client ports, the domain and time it took to load the data. Hoovering over an entry will display detailed information about that traffic including headers, protcols, frames and sizes.

The Statistics tab will list file types, the total sizes, status codes and the average compressibility of them. More interesting than that is the All Files tab which gives – very – detailed information about files that have been loaded from external domains. This includes file sizes, download rate, Round Trips and Content Length.

Analysis is the last tab of the software program. It analyses various aspects of the site’s performance like Bandwidth Efficiency, Average File Size, Packet Loss or Whitespaces. The score ranges from A (best) to F (worst). Each parameter that has been rated is explained in a short paragraph. Hoovering the mouse over a paragraph will give information on the sites performance.

The application provides access to all available network adapters which can be selected individually. The tabs driven interface creates a new tab for every capture process which is listing all applications and processes that have caused traffic on the network adapter.

The actual capturing process does not start before the user clicks on the Start button of the application. Another possibility would be to load a previously saved session which can be displayed as well in the interface. The network traffic will be captured continuously until the user decides to stop the capturing process.

Filters can be used to narrow down the results. About 25 default filters are available like filtering by IPv4 addresses but the user can also define his own filters. Each frame is displayed listing the process name, source and destination IP, protocol name and description. Another pane is displaying details about the currently selected frame.

The network monitor runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 and is available for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the selected operating systems.
