Ultra PDF Merger is a simple handy program for the Windows operating system that can perform that operation. The program is offered as a free download on the developer website. Please note that it is supplied as a rar file which needs to be unpacked with a compatible software (like 7-zip). The program itself requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. It can be run without installation.

You find options to add and remove individual pdf documents in the program interface. A click on the Add button opens a file browser that displays all pdf files of the selected folder. You can then add one or multiple documents stored in that folder to the program queue. Each document is listed with its file name and path in the interface.

The move up and down buttons can be used to rearrange the document order which can be handy if you want to arrange them by date, name, alphabet or another sort order.

The Merge Files button opens a save window where the location and name of the merged document needs to be selected.

All documents currently in the queue are then merged in the selected order and saved under the new file name. Please note that you may need to run the program with elevated privileges as you may otherwise receive an error message when trying to save the new document.

The pdf software actually does a lot more than what has already been mentioned in the opening paragraph. Lets take a closer look at some of its features. The application can be started right after it has been downloaded and unpacked on the system.

It displays a number of tabs at the top that lead to various functions and options. The input and output tabs are the only mandatory tabs, everything else is option.

PDF documents are added in the input tab. Options are available to process only some pages of a document and not all of them.

The folder the new pdf document is saved to is defined in the output tab. It offers additional options, for instance to use better compression or optimize the pdf size.

The following processing options are available via other tabs:

• Page size: Option to rotate pages and scale ages to another page size, width and height.
• Watermark: Add a watermark to the newly created pdf document.
• Shuffle: Options to reverse the page order, display multiple pages on one resulting page or create a pdf booklet.
• Page numbers: Change the page numbers..
• Bookmarks: Change chapter bookmarks, options to import from PDF or CSV.
• Attachments: Add attachments to the pdf file.
• Interaction. Add page transitions and change viewer preferences (e.g. hide toolbar, menubar, direction or view area.
• Document info: Change document meta information like title, subject, keywords or author and creator.
• Encrypt / Sign: encrypt the pdf document with a password or sign it.

The interface of the application feels old fashioned, but that should not keep users away from the pdf manipulation software. JPDF Tweak offers solutions for many common pdf file editing tasks.

PDF Binder is an Open Source tool for the Windows operating system that can be used to merge PDF files effectively. PDF documents can be dragged and dropped into the program interface after installation and startup or by using the Add File button in the program interface.

The PDF files will be concatenated in the exact order that they are added to the program with the top entry the first to appear in the resulting document.

PDF Files that have been added to the software program can be removed from it and sorted by using the up and down arrows that become active after selecting a PDF from the list.

The Bind button will open a save file dialog window where the target filename for the PDF needs to be specified. The process takes a few seconds the most and will save the pdf file that contains all merged pdf documents into the selected directory.

PDF Binder is an easy to use application to merge PDF files. It is Open Source, compatible with many Microsoft Windows operating systems (tested on Windows 7 Professional) and requires the Microsoft .net Framework. The tool can be downloaded from the project’s homepage at Google Code.

Here is what I normally do with the interesting articles that I download. Once I have them all on my hard drive I use a software to merge them so that I can access them in one pdf document which is much more convenient. The tool that I’m using for this is the excellent PDF SPlit and Merge which is available at Sourceforge.

I was not able to find any limitations so far concerning the amount of pdf files that you can add to be merged. I guess if there is a limitation you can still merge the newly created pdf document and the remaining pdfs that have not been added in first run.

The order of the files can be changed and pages of the documents can be excluded as well. There is one other option to check if at least one of the documents contains a form. The run button merges all selected pdf documents.

A status message is displayed that shows the progress and an error message if something should go wrong. The pdf document that caused the error is marked in the file list so that you can check it or remove it.

Splitting files is a little bit complicated because you obviously have to define how you want to split the document. Options are to split it in single pages, after n pages, after page numbers, or after even or odd pages.

Pdftk runs from the command line which means you should unpack the software into a directory that you can access easily. I put the file into c: for testing purposes along with two pdfs called 123.pdf and 456.pdf.

If you run pdftk without parameters you get a quick output that details the most important parameters. Lets take a look at the possible operations:

Merge pdf files:

pdftk 123.pdf 456.pdf output 123456.pdf

This tells pdftk to merge the two pdf files 123.pdf and 456.pdf into a new pdf called 123456.pdf. If you want to merge more than two pdf files at once you simply add them between pdftk and output. You could also use wildcards to merge many or all pdfs with a certain name.

pdftk *.pdf output 123456.pdf

Split pages from one or more pdfs:

pdftk A=123.pdf B=456.pdf cat A1-2 B4-5 output 1245.pdf

Repair a pdf:

pdftk 123.pdf output 123fixed.pdf

Merge encrypted pdfs:

pdftk A=123.pdf 456.pdf input_pw A=password cat output 123456.pdf
