Relevant Knowledge came to my attention for the first time when Transcontinental mentioned that the latest version of the popular software updater SUMO contained the additional installation. I soon discovered that all applications by the software developer, and several other popular ones like MediaCoder, contained the program. Lets discuss how Relevant Knowledge gets on the computer system before looking at what its functions are. A software program that comes with Relevant Knowledge will display an additional installation dialog that looks like any other EULA agreement that are common during software installations.

The important part of the agreement is outlined below.

… The information which is monitored and collected includes internet usage information, basic demographic information, certain hardware, software, computer configuration and application usage information about the computer on which you install RelevantKnowledge. We may use the information that we monitor, such as name and address, to better understand your household demographics; for example, we may combine the information that you provide us with additional information from consumer data brokers and other data sources in accordance with our privacy policy. We make commercially viable efforts to automatically filter confidential personally identifiable information and to purge our databases of such information about our panelists when inadvertently collected…

The user has the option to go back, accept or decline the agreement. Back simply goes back one screen, accept will install Relevant Knowledge on the computer system while decline will not install Relevant Knowledge and exit the software installation.

Looking at the agreement it is obvious that Relevant Knowledge is collecting and monitoring information about the user, the computer system and usage. It is also clear that the collected information are combined with information from various other sources to create an extensive profile. Relevant Knowledge may also display surveys from time to time on the computer system. It is therefor clear that most anti-spyware applications and other programs that protect a computer system against malicious software consider Relevant Knowledge to be spyware.

Relevant Knowledge can be uninstalled from the Windows Control Panel. It has its own entry there. Uninstallation will not affect the software program it was installed with. Some developers, like those that develop SUMO, provide access to a lite version of their application which will install the program without the Relevant Knowledge addition.

Users who usually click-through installations should begin to pay better attentions to the dialogs presented to them to avoid installing programs like Relevant Knowledge on their computer system.

YouTube isn’t just for watching videos. A lot of times you can find great music in the form of old songs that aren’t available anywhere else online. Or you come across a fascinating audio track and get tempted to use it elsewhere.

Extracting audio from a YouTube video usually requires you to download the video to your hard drive, convert it to another format and then extract the audio track from it. Well, I’ve been doing a little experimenting and discovered that you can extract audio directly without downloading the video from YouTube. The secret of my success: MediaCoder.

As far as transcoders go, Mediacoder is one of the best out there. It requires a bit of a learning curve but it’s capable of a lot of stuff. I’ve been using it almost exclusively whenever I need to convert a video or any media files.

To extract the audio directly from a YouTube video, navigate to the video in question and copy the link in the address bar. Then, open up Mediacoder, click on the Add button and select Add Url. Paste the link of the video in the box that pops up.

Now, you need to adjust the settings of the converted file. On the lower left-hand side of the GUI are the different transcoding parameters. Click on the Audio tab and select the encoder format. For example, if you want an MP3 file, you would select the Lame MP3 encoder. Then, click the Video tab and uncheck the box ‘Enable Video’. This ensures that only the audio is transcoded.

Once your transcoded settings are in place, click the Start button to begin converting your file. It only takes a few minutes or so. After transcoding is finished, play back the transcoded file and check if it’s complete.

I’ve done a lot of testing and this method works for most YouTube videos but not all of them. I think that has something to do with the format used in the original file upload. Still, this is a nice trick to try out whenever you want to quickly extract an audio track from online video.

Have you used Mediacoder to extract audio before? What do you think of this tip? What software do you use to extract audio from a video clip? Let me know in the comments.

I got a call from a friend sometime back, frantically asking me if I knew anyone who could create a movie trailer for her. It was part of an assignment that was due in a couple of days. I figured the average video store MIGHT do it but they would probably charge a bomb.

I thought over it for a while and then came up with a solution my friend could use herself. The answer is the free MediaCoder, an all-in-one transcoder application. It’s like the Swiss army knife of media programs. With me giving directions over the phone, my friend was able to create the movie trailer with no hassles.

After you download and install the program, start it up. If you’re new to MediaCoder, the interface looks confusing but don’t worry, it’s easy to figure out. I’ve provided a screenshot below to help.

MediaCoder has a LOT of different configurations. I’m only going to give a bare-bones description for creating a basic movie trailer or this post will become huge. Before you start, you need to select where your file will end up. Do this by configuring the ‘Output Folder’ field at the top left-side. Then, select the original file you are using by hitting the ‘Add’ button on the right side and going to ‘Add File’.

MediaCoder is primarily a transcoder but in this case, I won’t be changing the format of my file, which makes my job easier. Click on the ‘Audio’ tab on the left side and check the box labeled ‘Copy Audio’. Switch to the ‘Video’ tab and check the box for ‘Copy Video’.

Now, click on the tab ‘Time’. Enter the start and end times of the clip you need. Then click on ‘Select’ to preview your clip. If your satisfied, proceed to the next step otherwise go back to the ‘Time’ field and input a different time. When you’re ready to go, just press the button ‘Start’, which is in the top row of buttons. A new window pops up to show the task in process. After the task is complete, go to your output folder and rename the output file to ‘part1’ or something like that.

Follow the above steps for each of the other ‘timed’ clips you need. Remember not to change any settings except for the time period selected. I had to do this for three clips of thirty seconds or so and I ended up with clips labeled part1, part2, and part3. All I had to do now was combine them, which again I could do in MediaCoder.

In the middle region of the interface (in line with the progress bar), there is a small option called ‘Task Mode’. Use the drop-down menu to select the ‘Join’ function. Then, add each of your transcoded files, in the order of joining eg. parts 1, 2, and 3. Hit the ‘Start’ button again and your output file this time will be the joined video clip.

That’s all there is to it. I realize the process sounds complicated but it’s quite easy once you try it out yourself. What do you use to make movie trailers? Would you give this method a try? Got any other questions? Ask me in the comments.
