Some use applications like Notepad for this, or full blown applications designed for that purpose, while others use the good old pen and paper method to keep track of things.

You usually have to open the document or program window on the computer before you can start adding new log entries or editing old ones. And that’s one of the things that Anuran changes. The program has been designed to display the log window automatically on the screen. The default interval is set to 30 minutes with options to change the value to a different one in the program options.

Two manual options are available to bring the log window to the front. You can first double-click on the program icon in the system tray or configure a shortcut in the program options for that purpose.

The log remains on top until you submit your entry with a tap on the return key on the keyboard. The Ctrl-Enter shortcut adds a new line to the log, with the option to reverse the behavior in the program settings (so that enter moves the cursor to a new line, and Ctrl-Enter submits it).

While we are at it, the program is highly customizable. From setting up hotkeys for all important features to defining the log entry timestamp format or popup behavior.

The main program window displays all log files available along with the entries that they contain. Logs can be exported into csv or text files, opened in Notepad and searched using the built-in search form.

Take a look at this screencast for a visual program walkthrough.

Keep in mind that the data that you enter into the log is saved in plain text format. This means that anyone with access to the user account or hard drive the data is stored on can access it. One way to overcome this limitation is to save the logs in an encrypted container, for instance with the help of True Crypt.

Interested users can download the portable software from the Donation Coder website. The program is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

Log Analyzer Log Viewer Pro

Software

Windows

log

log analyzer

log files

log viewer

logs

portable software

windows software
<guid

Its main benefits are the low memory usage and support for log files with a size of over 4 Gigabytes. There are obviously other features and options which will be discussed in the following article. Log Viewer Pro will work best with log files that store each entry in their own line. It can load pretty much any document however but loses most of its functionality when doing so.

It is possible to load multiple log files into the log viewer which can then be looked at and switched to in the tabbed interface on top of the application. Log Viewer Pro will automatically highlight lines that contain warnings, information or errors to make the identification easier for the user. It is possible to define additional lines that get highlighted automatically using regular expressions.

<span

The log files can be automatically reloaded if that is required. Another interesting feature are bookmarks which can be created to jump to specific locations in a log file.

<img

It could also be interesting to know even if you are using the computer alone but have it accessible in a room where others could access it. Parents could for example check on their children’s computer usage and roommates if there have been any unauthorized access to the computer system lately.

Marxio Login Logger is a software program for the Windows operating system that can create the access log file and reports that detail the logins and logouts of every user on the system including login attempts over a computer network and in an Active Directory environment

The program is completely portable and no signs of it appear on the user’s desktop other than its process in the Windows task manager. It will automatically create a log file based on the initial configuration. Each log file includes information about the data and time of the login, the username, computer name, network IP and operating system. It is possible to adjust these parameters and use them in the log file creation as well.

The portable computer program can be downloaded from the developer’s website. New users should start with the included readme file to understand how to configure and use the program.

Update: The program has been discontinued. Users can alternatively use the Windows Event Log to find out when someone logged in or out of their operating system. The easiest way to access the Event Log is to type event log in the start Menu run box and select the Event Viewer from the options. You then look under Windows Logs > System and there for Source entries named Winlogon which covers both log ons and log offs.

Windows Access Monitor

Operating Systems

Security

Software

Windows

log

microsoft

users
<guid

The tool has to be run on startup to log the user system access and can be password protected to make sure no one but the administrator can view the log files.

The icon can be hidden from “normal” users but the process is still visible in the task manager which means it it at least possible to see that it is running and find out what it is being used for.

<span

The first and in my opinion dominant one is to unsettle the torrent users by lowering the rate of successful downloads. Nothing is more discouraging than downloading the latest blockbuster for days only to see that you downloaded only garbarge in that time. In addition to this the trackers that spread the fake torrents are recording every bit of information they can get their hands on.

The IP address can be used to identify users and sue them in the process for instance, still the main reason is to destablizie the system and make users leave it. One way to find fake torrents is to use the newly introduced Fake Finder which is a script that displays and lets you search for the latest fake torrents that are known to them. There is no 100% guarantee that the site lists all fake torrents and trackers but it lists many and you should consult it before you begin to download a file.

The list of torrent trackers that spread the fake torrents is large and you should use a program like peerguardian to block them all. This prevents the connection at all and should protect your privacy.
