Lala used to be a CD exchange site until pretty recently. Since its launch, more than 500,000 CDs have been traded on the site. Now, the site has reinvented itself and has turned into a music store.

Songs bought on Lala can be played on your iPod which makes Lala pretty unique as of now. Lala also has its own music player that can go through your entire digital music collection and upload whatever songs are missing on the site to its own library. This makes your songs accessible to you whenever you are logging in from a different computer.

Much like lastfm, Lala also allows you to create your own playlists and share them with other users. The best thing about Lala is the preview feature. While other sites offer a preview of only a few seconds, Lala actually lets you listen to entire albums. The idea is to entice listeners to go ahead and purchase tracks for their iPods or computers after they are done.

Lala mostly supports independent artists but there are quite a number of mainstream ones on the site too. This is thanks to its tie-up with the Warner Music Group. To listen to songs, you need to signup, which is pretty easy.

I don’t know of too many other sites that let you listen to complete albums. I think this site has great potential though. What do you think?

Anywhere.fm is a new music portal that has the look and feel of iTunes from Apple. Registered users can upload their complete music collection to the service to be able to listen to their music from anywhere in the World if that place has access to the Internet. There is currently no cap on the number of songs that can be uploaded which will probably change when the service reaches a certain user base.

I was really surprised that the registration did not require an email address at all. It was just a small popup asking for a new username and password, after that the account was created. It is possible to upload songs only if you are logged into the site.

Anywhere.fm offers a separate client software to upload the mp3 files but also offers to use the web browser to upload them. The software is called iTunes uploader which is only compatible with iTunes. It can be lots of work if you do not use iTunes and have your music colection categorized in many folders. It is however possible to upload more than one file at a time using the web uploader if they are in the same directory.

The big advantage of Anywhere.fm over services like Grooveshark is the fact, that the mp3 files are stored on their servers which means that you do not have to stream music from slow connections. Every user automatically creates his own radio station. If someone else adds you to his friend list he can listen to the songs in his web browser.

There is unfortunately no way to create playlists or save songs from other users. Anywhere.fm offers a nice service that lacks features that many users would like to see. The ability to create playlists (radio stations) for instance from different friends.

It remains to be seen if they can keep the unlimited number of songs per users or will offer a subscription based service once they have reached the critical mass.
