The software can be used to save Last.fm music and requires a Last.fm username. The usability and interface has been changed a lot in this new version. The first change is probably the most important one: Users can now search and create Last.fm playlists inside the program instead of copying and pasting urls from Last.fm into The Last Ripper.

The Skip song function works properly as well and you can just sit back and watch how all the songs that are played are recorded to your hard drive. Album covers and ID3v2 are appended automatically. Other updates include support for international characters and http proxies.

As I said before it is possible to search for songs or artists and create radio stations that can be recorded but it is also possible to use personal stations, playlists, neighbors or to paste urls that point to radio stations. Works perfectly to increase your music collection in no time.

The Last Ripper is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The newest version however is only available for Windows at the moment. Found the update at Alter Falter, a German blog.

I never paid much attention although Last.fm was mentioned every now and then in news and in chats. The main interface reminds me of Pandora but the options and possibilities given by Last.fm exceed those of Pandora by a large margin.

The Last Ripper is a freeware audio recorder that saves Last.fm streams as mp3 music files on your hard drive. A Last.fm account is necessary to use The Last Ripper. Once installed you enter your login name and password into the software and choose one of the radio stations available.

The Last Ripper has several other features that come in quite handy, they are:

  • Recording Last.fm streams to mp3’s
  • Organize your music in directories: Artist/Album/Track/
  • Downloads coverart
  • Appends ID3v1 tags
  • Generates playlist in M3U, SMIL, PlS
