Karaoke and Karaoke software is becoming more and more popular since Sony decided to release the first Singstar Playstation 2 Karaoke game. Even friends who never heard of the Playstation 2 before were fascinated by those Karaoke games and some even bought a Playstation 2 only for those games. In case you did not know, Karaoke means that someone sings the song while only the instruments play in the background. This is tremendous fun especially in conjunction with cold beer.

KaraFun Karaoke Software is a free Karaoke software product for your personal computer. All you need is a microphone, some songs and the fun can begin. The Karaoke software comes with three songs: La Bamba, My Way and When the saints go marchin in. My Way seems to be only a demo song which has advertisement after a while. You can use the Karaoke editor to edit songs from your hard drive and make them Karaoke ready so to speak. This is probably a very time consuming task and you could be tempted to purchase some Karaoke tracks in the store from KaraFun. The tracks offered there are overpriced in my opinion, who wants to pay $2.99 for a single Karaoke track ?

A far better way in my opinion would be to purchase a Karaoke Cd (or more) from Ebay. KaraFun is able to play CDG Karaoke CDs for instance which start at about 99 cents at Ebay.

The software looks nice but is more of a professional Karaoke software than a product like Singstar that concentrates on the gaming aspect instead.

Yahoo bought a site I never heard about

Ever heard about Bix ? Bix.com to be precise. Don’t be ashamed to admit that you never heard about it either. I read about the site today and decided to pay a visit to website I never heard about before. I always thought I know everything that is going on but it seems that some sites seem to slip through my grasps. Back to Bix: Bix is a contest site that seems to be pretty famous for it’s Karaoke contests.

Everyone is able to create a contest on Bix. Christmas contests seem to be all over the place at the moment, you can win prizes if you win them. Everytime you visit a contest the site presents two videos from contestants that you can listen to. After doing that you have to pick one of the two and the pick will get some points. Bix features more contests than just Karaoke ones of course, you can view beauty contests, dance contests, a cappella, writing, photography, lip sync and more contests on the site.

You find many contests within each category. I found some real interesting ones, vote for the hottest Stanford Profs, the sexiest female biker or poems that touch a nerve. Most people will of course view the Karaoke competitions, for a good laugh. Don’t get me wrong. You find talented singers amongst the contestants but also some that are not that great. Just take a look at all those tv shows that are looking for singers, those people participate. Good ones, bad ones, you name it.

If you have the talent you can take part in the contests. I read somewhere that they had contests with prize money of up to $50.000, not bad for some minutes of singing, performing or smiling.

Ultrastar – Singstar like game for your PC

Have you ever played Singstar on the Playstation 2 ? It is a Karaoke like game that is great fun if you play it with some friends. Ultrastar looks clearly like it was inspired by Singstar. The big advantage ? It is completely free and offers many texts for songs on various websites on the internet. You need to download the Ultrastar main program from Sourceforge at the beginning, it is only 500k which means it should be a fast download even for slow connections.

Install Ultrastar and try it out, you will need at least one microphone to use the software. The downloaded version comes along with one demo song which you can try and get a hang for the tool. It is possible to play the game with up to four players which is tremendous fun, if you are kinda shy you might want to try it alone first. Works great and fast. One song is of course weak. It is rather easy to get new songs and I’m going to explain two methods to do so.

You download text files that contain all the information ultrastar needs to add the song to its library of songs. You do need the mp3 files as well which is normally not included when you download the text file. A good tutorial that explains this process in detail is located at ultrastarstuff.com. You basically need to download the text file, take a look at the name the mp3 should have and name the mp3 file accordingly. It would be best to download text files with song information from mp3 files that you already have on your computer.

The second method might be illegal in most countries. Fire up Emule and Search for Ultrastar. You should find many packages that contain the music and the text files, some even include videos of the song which makes it even more fun. A site with links to some of the emule downloads is the Spanish Ultrastar website.
