The plugin for Internet Explorer will scan and rate the active website and websites listed in search results of the major search engines Google Search, Yahoo Search and MSN (surprisingly not Bing Search). Up to two different indicators are shown on websites. Always visible is the TrendProtect toolbar item that changes its color depending on the rating of the active website.

Seven different color coded ratings are used in the browser plugin. Most important ratings are green for a safe website, red for a dangerous website and yellow which indicates undesirable and suspicious contents.

The second indicator becomes only visible on the supported search engine results pages. Every url on these pages, even the advertisements, will be rated by TrendProtect to give the user an indication of the possible dangers on these websites.

The ratings of the service are calculated by taking page and site reputation, phishing scam detection and content categories into account. It is possible to influence some values in the options of the plugin. This includes selecting categories like gambling or adult as undesirable. Another option is the addition of websites to a list of trusted websites.

TrendProtect is available for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 (although it is not mentioned on the page) only at this moment. TrendMicro has plans to port the plugin to the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

One of the areas where Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is lagging behind is favorites management. Favorite is just another term for bookmarks in Internet Explorer. Even the latest beta of Internet Explorer 8 does not come with effective tools to manage the favorites in the web browser.

One of the main functions missing is a favorites search. Internet Explorer does not offer a way to search in the favorites which is one of the most fundamental functions for many users. Imagine having to scroll through thousands of favorites to find the one you are looking for.

Internet Explorer Favorites Search is a small plugin for Internet Explorer that adds the functionality to search Internet Explorer Favorites to the browser. It should automatically add a icon to the Internet Explorer toolbar which will open a sidebar when pressed.

If the icon does not appear after installation do the following: Right-click a toolbar in Internet Explorer and select the Customize > Add Or Remove Commands option from the menu.

Locate the entry Favorites Search and move it to the list of Current Toolbar buttons.

You only need to press the button and enter a search term to search the favorites in Internet Explorer from then on. The plugin will check both the urls as well as the names of the websites for matches.

One of the main areas that Microsoft is lacking behind with Internet Explorer in comparison to browsers like Opera or Firefox is the extensibility. Yes, there are plugins for Internet Explorer but the community is not thriving like those of the other browsers. The main reason might be that it is more difficulty to create plugins for Internet Explorer.

The lack of plugins can be problematic if you have to use Internet Explorer due to work policies. The Copy Selected Links plugin for Internet Explorer makes it a little bit easier to copy multiple links (via Shellcity) of a page.

The plugin installs itself automatically to the right-click context menu of Internet Explorer and becomes automatically active whenever at least one link is selected. Links can be selected with the left mouse button easily. Every link that has been selected will be copied to the Windows Clipboard when the option is selected from the right-click menu.

All links are copied with a carriage return meaning that pasting them into another document will return one link per line.

Most users have their favorite websites that they visit everyday. The weather report, tv program, world news, a forum or a blog with daily technology news. What if it would be possible to extract the important bits of those websites and combine them into one new site that would update itself automatically and present the information in compact form?

That is basically what Ecletic for Internet Explorer does. The add-on installs itself to the right-click context menu of Internet Explorer and as a toolbar button which when pressed changes the cursor into a tool that can be used to draw a rectangle around the desired information.

The snippet that has been marked that way will be shown in a preview window where the user has to make the decision if he wants to add it to an existing page or a new one. That page opens afterwards and all elements on that page can be moved around and resized to fit the screen.

It works similar to tools like MWSnap that can take a screenshot from part of the computer monitor by drawing an rectangle around the part that should be included.

The first custom page that is created by the user will be the homepage of that user. Additional pages like weather, news or sports are available by default that have been created by the developers of the application. New pages can be created in the preview window and are afterwards accessible by clicking on the white paper sheet in the main menu.

Each element that has been added gets updated automatically be the service. The user has the option to press the Refresh button manually to update the snippet immediately. The service lagged a bit during tests, it usually took a few seconds before a new snippet got updated and shown on the pages. Pages can be bookmarked like usual websites and opened at a later time again.

The application contains a link entitled Upgrade to Professional which leads to the homepage. The homepage however does not contain any information about upgrading or buying the Internet Explorer plugin.

Web Archive Viewer is a plugin for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer that provides access to file archives before the download. It displays the contents of zip and rar archives and gives Internet Explorer users the option to download selected files instead of the complete archive.

This can be useful if only a few files are needed that are provided as an archive on a website or ftp server. The effect saves bandwidth and speeds up the process. This technique is also available for Firefox provided by the Firefox extension Archview.

Web Archive Viewer has to be installed after download. It adds a right-click context menu entry to Internet Explorer when performing the action on a zip or rar file. The option “Open in Web Archives Viewer” should appear in the menu.

Selecting the option will open the web archive viewer showing the contents of the file archive in tree view. It is possible to click through the structure which contains information about file names, sizes and dates.

Double-clicking an entry will load it in the default application for that file type. There is however no way of saving the file by right-clicking it. The only option is to double-click it. Web Archive Viewer is furthermore not supporting any multi-volume archives.

HTTP Watch is a HTTP monitoring plugin for Microsoft Internet Explorer that can give a detailed information about a website or application that is loading in the browser. The main reasons for using an application like HTTP Watch are troubleshooting, performance tuning and security checks. It’s mostly useful for webmasters but regular users might find a reason or two to use the software as well, especially when security is a factor.

The main interface reminds of the Firefox Firebug extension which uses a similar interface to display various information. HTTP Watch for Internet Explorer is no where near complex than Firebug. One of its main features is that it displays all connections and files that are transferred when a website or application is loaded in Internet Explorer.

It displays the overall time it takes to load a website and the loading time of each element of the website individually. Webmasters can use those information to optimize the loading time of their websites.

Results can be filtered, saved or printed for further analysis. The Internet Explorer plugin provides access to several additional features like status codes, performance reports and options to clear the system cache and cookies.

GripIE is a plugin for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer that integrates itself nicely in the Internet Explorer toolbar. It is assisting the user in downloading multiple media files at once from the active website. Supported are image, video and audio formats that are either embedded in or linked from the website.

A click on the GripIE icon in the Internet Explorer toolbar opens the plugin. I had the difficulty that the popup blocker blocked the plugin at first and that I had to allow it on a per site basis to use it. The popup blocker can be bypassed by clicking on the GripIE icon while pressing the CTRL key.

Once loaded it presents a color coded list of files that it detected. Images are light blue while movies are dark blue for instance. Each of the available media files can be filtered so that only the interesting files are displayed in the list sorted by server. Each file can be selected individually in the interface but it is also possible to check a server directly which will download all files from that server.

The download is started by pressing the Download Files button. Each file is downloaded separately directly in Internet Explorer and stored by default in the My Documents folder under the server name. The plugin works pretty well as long as the media files are directly linked from the website but fails when it comes to media streams. It does not work on Youtube for instance but that’s probably not the main application for a mass downloader anyway.
