All you need to do, is fire up the application, select your style (Adobe style, or Web 2.0 star style), enter your text, up to four letters, select a background color and click generate. The shading is done extremely well, no matter what color you choose your icon will look good. This really is a great way to create file extension icons, especially if you use a lot like php, css, js and so on, you can get much better stuff the the original system ones.

The only thing I don’t like about the app is how it saves icons, more specifically, the naming. It generates four files with the names of “icon_16.png” for example, where “icon” is NOT the name you entered. This way, if you want to save a new icon, you need to get the old ones out of the way because they will be overwritten. I have no idea why the icons are not named after the name you enter, this would make saving and handling of these files much easier. Otherwise a great little app, give it a go!

Registration is free and simple. Add a screen name, your email and a password and you are ready to use their system. You could use one use emails to register there if you like but I don’t think this is necessary. The last thing that needs to be done is to upload an avatar to mybloglog and it will be displayed on all websites that you visit that support it. You can also add code to your own website if you have one to personalize it as well.

After all of this is done right-click a file, folder or drive and select Change Icon from the context menu. A window pops up showing the path to the file, folder or drive. You will have to choose a icon library, some of which can be loaded from the developers page, and all the icons of that library will be displayed.

Just click on the icon that you want to use and use the optional “Use icon for all files of that type” if you wish that as well. Changes will be visible immediately and you can repeat the process if you don’t like the icon anymore.

You got two options when creating a new action. The first one is two define one or two actions that should be started once you press the hotkey, the other one uses the “if the current window” state to define actions that take place if the current window is in that state. You could create shortcuts that open a program and then make it stay always on top. It is also possible to combine both options.

The Wonderful Icon adds a icon to the system tray which offers something different as well. Clicking the icon gives you the ability to logoff or reboot for instance. You can define new entries to that menu easily as well using the same technique that the shortcuts offer.
