HD video authoring software multiAVCHD has been designed to author AVCHD, Blu-Ray, HD DVD, SD-Video, to transfer DVD backups without re-encoding into Blu-Ray or AVCHD format, to watch Blu-Ray disk backups without re-encoding in their Playstation 3 or to create a 1080p menu for up to 252 different files of various formats including MPEG2, Quicktime MOV, MKV/AVC, AVI/AVC, M2TS/MTS, TS, TRP, M2V, VC1, 264, MP4, MPLS, IFO, etc.) or AVCHD / Blu-ray / DVD / VIDEO_TS folders.

Output can be created for various devices including Blu-Ray players employing Secure Digital High Capacity capabilities (SD/SDHC cards), Blu-Ray players compatible with the AVCHD format written on DVD-R media or BD-R discs, USB / MS (MemoryStick) / SD / SDHC equipped Blu-ray disc players (like the Sony Playstation 3, HD DVD players that support DVD-R (3xDVD). It is furthermore possible to output directly into BDMV format.

One interesting usage example for multiAVCHD is the following: Creating a menu for up to 252 video files (e.g. tv series, youtube clips), putting them all on a USB drive to watch these videos on the Sony Playstation 3. A good start to get acquainted with the program is the excellent tutorial that is available at the developer’s website. The developer’s website itself is linking to Rapidshare for program downloads. DVD Identifier

Many DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray writers work best with blank media from a specific manufacturer. One could argue that it is only a matter of looking at the label of the blank media to find out about the manufacturer but the information presented there is not always reliable. It can happen that the brand name differs from the manufacturer and it is not uncommon that a brand makes use of several manufacturers for the same product line.

DVD Identifier is a software program that can identify and display the information that is recorded on the blank media. The main interface of DVD Identifier will display various information about the default writer – be it DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Some of the information provided include the write capabilities of the drive which gives the user an understanding of the support media types.

The Identify button becomes active after putting a blank disk into the drive. A click on the button will start the identification which consults a manufacturer database that gets updated regularly.

Information provided include the manufacturer name, ID and the blank disk capacity. DVD Identifier is also providing in depth information about the drive capabilities on the disk inserted and the media code block.

Blu-Ray hardware sales figures drop in 2008

The format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is finally over and one would have thought that this would have a positive effect on Blu-Ray sales especially from the customer group that decided to wait and see which side would win the war. Now that HD-DVD lost the format war it should have been clear that consumers would buy Blu-Ray players. Apparently though they are not.

Figures for the first quarter of 2008 have just been released and Blu-Ray standalone player sales dropped by 40% between January and February and rose by only 2% in March. Analysts had predicted that the winning format would see a strong surge in hardware sales but this is not happening.

The price of the Blu-Ray player cannot possibly be the reason for the sharp drop. The players were as expensive when Blu-Ray was still competing with HD-DVD and the prices have not changed a lot since then. One possible reason could be that the customers who wanted to purchase a Blu-Ray player have already done so and that the others simply do not want to pay that much money for a movie player.

Add to that the Internet update problematic and horror stories that some early Blu-Ray players will not be able to play new movies because of technology updates and you pretty much got it summed up.

Would not it be funny if no format would win the war ? That Blu-Ray would not win either because most consumers don’t need it ? That another company would come up with a better format, without DRM, for a lesser price ? I would love to see that. How about you ?

No HD DVD Players for XBOX 360 anymore

The high definition format war is almost over with Blu-Ray winning the field. Microsoft was supporting the HD DVD format by offering the HD DVD player add-on for their XBOX 360 gaming system. In an announcement made today they made clear that HD DVD will be pulled as add-ons for the XBOX 360 as well.

Roughly 300.000 HD DVD player add-ons have been sold for the XBOX 360 and the owners find themselves in an awkward position although the HD DVD player was never needed for gaming purposes and won’t have an impact on that.

Microsoft does have two options at the moment. They could create a Blu-Ray add-on for the XBOX 360 which I think is unlikely or they could push digital downloads which is the most likely scenario. The major problem in my opinion is the size of the hard drive which seems way to small for huge digital downloads.

HD DVD is throwing the towel

With more and more companies announcing to go Blu-Ray exclusive it is only a matter of time until Blu-Ray will be announced the winner of the battle of the high definition war. I really could care less which format wins the race because I have no intention to purchase either of them in the near future but if you plan to purchase a HD player you probably should buy a Blu-Ray player.

I’m not a huge fan of Sony and have still hopes but it looks pretty sad for the HD DVD supporters. Those consumers who have bought a HD DVD player will face a huge problem much like the Betamax users faced back in the days when VHS did win that race. It occured to me that the consumer is always loosing in this kind of wars.

If you pick the wrong player you will have to purchase another one to be able to view high definition videos, if you pick the right player you contributed to a monopoly, and it’s Sony this time – it will be awful, it’s a Sony after all.

The HD war is not over yet

If you thought that the HD war was over with the switch of Warner Studios from supporting both HD formats to just Blu-Ray then you might want to observe the market a little bit longer. The effect that Warner has left the HD DVD supporters will not be visible to consumers later this year when the contract expires (May 2008). From then on Warner will only release movies on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Two studios, Paramount and Universal are still backing up HD DVD and press releases suggest that they have no intention to change their stance in the near future. Movie fans are still facing the problem that a choice can’t be made if they wanted to watch movies from all studios unless they would purchase a more expensive dual player that would play Blu-Ray and HD DVD movies.

Many Blu-Ray and HD DVD movies are currently offered at Amazon for 50% off and player prices have been reduced as well. You can purchase a HD DVD player for $149.99 and get five HD DVDs free as a bonus which is an attractive offer.

My stance on this matter remains unchanged. I will boycott both formats and won’t purchase a remaining format as well if there should be a winning format in the near future. I do so mainly because of DRM and all the crap that is loaded into those players. I also have no intention to update my player’s firmware regularly because the manufacturer published a new firmware to fix some security holes.

That’s not what I want and I’m pretty confident that this is something that most consumers do not want as well – if they would know that is.

HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray Next Round

I don’t know how you feel about the ongoing format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray but I’m sick and tired to hear which company is backing up which format and which format is doomed because of this move. Today the news hit the Internet by storm that Warner is going Blu-Ray exclusive and everyone was asking the question if this was the end of HD-DVD losing another major movie studio.

To be honest; I do not care if that is the end, if the war will go on another decade or if everyone will come to their senses and produce one format for all movies. I can understand that companies want to push a format that they have created. What I can’t understand is that movie companies like Warner did not pressure the format creators to create one format which would be the best for the customers.

Now we have two formats and everything seems to be utterly complicated. Playstation 3 owners want Blu-Ray to win, the guys who bought a HD-DVD drive for their Xbox 360 want that format to win and everyone can’t play movies that are released exclusively for the other format.

It’s all about money of course and the company whose format is going to win will make most of it for a long time to come. Do they care about the viewers, the customers ? I don’t think so. Besides the obvious fact that many customers who already bought a new player will not be able to view all movies they are also confusing everyone who has not made a decision yet.

My opinion is that we will see players who are supporting both formats. They will cost more but are in my opinion the only reasonable way to please those who buy the players. I for one will use DVD as long as possible and boycott this insane war. I would change my mind if they would release a player that is fast, without all the copy protection and DRM and play both formats without problems. This will never happen I know but hope is still there.

The HD-DVD vs. Blue-Ray war confuses consumers

The war between HD-DVD and Blue-Ray entered a next stage with the announcements of Paramount and Dreamworks to publish their lineup exclusively on HD-DVD. Rumors soon spread around the Internet that both companies were receiving payments (Paramount $50 million dollars, Dreamworks $100 million dollars) from HD supporters to make this decision.

The situation is currently the following: Paramount and Universal will publish their movies exclusively on HD-DVD while Disney, Fox, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM publish theirs exclusively on Blue-Ray. Time Warner seems to be the only movie company that is producing movies for both HD formats.

While the companies are battling for the one true format consumers are confused and left with choices that they can’t make at the moment. No one wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a HD player if that player will be obsolete in a few years. Remember the Beta / VHS fiasco back then ?

The best choice at the moment is to wait in my opinion and buy the movies on DVD which is the only format that will see all movie releases from all companies. If you already made a purchase you can enjoy some of the movies in HD but will have to rely on DVDs to be able to watch the other movies.

I’m really happy that I do not have an HD television yet and no desire to buy an Xbox 360 with HD drive or a PS3 with Blue-Ray in the near future. I have all the time in the world to wait and see how this war continues. Will it be decided by money or by the choice of the consumers ?

DVDFab HD Decrypter

DVDFab HD Decrypter is a free DVD and HD ripper that is able to copy the contents of a movie onto your hard drive even if that movie is copy protected. It can remove DVD copy protections such as CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS and even manages to remove AACS from Blue-Ray and HD-DVD disks which means that it should be possible to copy most DVDs and HD DVDs that you have to your hard disk without running into copy protection problems.

The only aspect that is a little bit confusing is the menu structure. Since this is basically a free version of DVDFab Gold and Platinum not all options are accessible in the main menu. It is only possible to rip the DVD or HD movie to your hard disk removing all copy protection in the process or to uncheck certain elements, such as extra languages or trailers, on the disk before you do that.

The options should be your first stop before you start using DVDFab HD Decrypter. Make sure you change the temp and output directories if your c: drive does not have enough space to hold a full DVD or HD movie.

The Region Code is removed as well by default making the disk universally playable on all players. It seems however that this setting has to be changed in the options whenever a disk with a different region code is inserted. It was automatically set to region 2 and it did not change when I placed a region 1 disk in the drive.

Still no problem unless you have a lot of disks from different regions. DVDFab HD Decrypter is a great tool if you want to copy DVD or HD movies with or without copy protection. Please note that using this tool might be illegal in some countries.

So, who is winning the HD war ?

I’m not that interested in the HD format war because I do not have a television that is HD Ready and do not plan to buy one in the near future. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I feel a little bit lost about the success or failure of HD-DVD and Blue-Ray players and movies. It is however not only a choice of choosing or owning the right tv, it is also important to know the differences of the formats as well.

I thought that I’m going to discuss it with you. What are your thoughts about both formats ? Do you think that Blue-Ray is in the lead, maybe because of the boost after the release of the Playstation 3 by Sony ? Or is it the HD-DVD format that you think will win this war.

A possible third scenario would be that both formats will get their share of the market or that hybrid players will take over once their availability rises and prices drop. I personally can’t see that one or the other format is currently leading by a large margin and this is probably one of the reasons why many consumers refrain from buying such a player at the moment.

I feel confused that some movie studios for instance only support one of the players which should be a major point of consideration for everyone who buys such a player these days. So, who is winning the HD war ?

AACS’s response to the publicity that they generated

You surely now what has happened during the last week. The AACS send some cease and desist letters to bloggers and website owners requesting the takedown of the so called HD-DVD processing key. The story more or less exploded on the web. The main reason for this was probably the way the admins of digg.com handled the affair. Their first decided to pull all articles posted to digg containing the key which lead to a furious reaction of the digg community who submitted so many articles about the key to digg that the founder of digg decided to follow the lead of his community and let it happen.

In the meanwhile many news sites, radio stations and even tv networks published stories about what was happening on the Internet distributing the key exponentially on the Internet. If you search for the code today you find that more than 1.3 million websites reference it. The AACS nevertheless decided to take on the fight which leads to question that I would like to ask “Have not they learned a thing from last weeks events ?”

Even if it would be technically possible to send Cease and Desist letters to all 1.3 million websites they would not have eliminated the key from the eye of the public. They probably can force American websites to take down the key but what about sites that do not care about American laws ? China, Russia or even Sweden for instance. Those sites most likely won’t react at all to letters that they receive.

If they are really going to send those letters out it will generate even more hype which leads to even more sites posting that key. The funny thing here is that not many users even know what they could do with that key. How is this key helping them defeat the copy protection of HD-DVD / Blue-Ray movies ?

The commercial pirates already know the key and produce copies using it but what about you and me ? Do we profit from that key in any way ? I don’t think so. At least not at the moment. The casual user will not be able to use the key until someone does write a good program that does everything automatically.

The actions of the AACS remind me of someone running with his head against a wall and instead of learning from this painful incident they decide to do it again because they still believe this was the only way to get past it.

You might have heard that the AACS is sending Cease and Desist letters to websites who link to a forum thread at the Doom9 forum which has information about the processing key for HD-DVD movies. Instead of focusing on the free speech issues that arise in this matter I would like to point out to something interesting. This number made many users creative and I decided to publish all the interesting creative works that point to that number.

09 F9 11 02 T-Shirt

Did you know that you could get into really big trouble if you post the code beginning with 09 F9 11 02 on your website ? It is very likely that a takedown notice will be send to the owner of the website as soon as the RIAA, the AACS or some of their lawyers find your website. You might be wondering why they are making such a big deal about this code that continues to be 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 which only some users might identify as the code to rule them all.. aka the processing key that unlocks the content of every HD-DVD available up to this point.

Did you know that this was the processing key that ends with 63 56 88 C0 ? I did not until I read an article where the AACS sent some takedown notices to websites owners who mentioned the key. So, what is actually happening now is that this key will be reproduced on thousands of websites who report about this takedown notices, it will be available in caches, in forum entries and in many other places including custom created T-Shirts, Mugs and Mousepads. It seems that the takedown notice somehow backfired on the AACS, don’t you think ?

HD-DVD Encryption has been hacked

The war between Blue-Ray and HD-DVD is still in the beginning which frustrates the consumers. One nail in the Blue-Ray coffin might have been added today by a guy who managed to hack the HD-DVD encryption. Being able to backup the expensive HD-DVD movies could win the format war. Most users will not be able to backup their HD-DVDs right away because the process sounds a little bit complicated and the author of the code did not reveal all the information how he managed to rip a HD-DVD movie but the source is available which means that many programmers will take a look and create advanced versions of it.

It took the author 20 days to encrypt the protection using his Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive and lots of free time. He started looking at solutions because he was unable to play a purchased HD-DVD movie using a HD-DVD drive and a HD monitor. I never fully understood why they created such restrictive formats in the first place. They only make their customers angry with restrictions like this, hackers will always find a way.

One Chip to track them down

What is wrong with those movie and music companies ? Why the heck are they increasing the pressure on people who are actually buying their overpriced items instead of those who copy them in large scale ? Their newest invention is apparently an embedded radio transmitter chip that can be remotely tracked by those companies making it possible to follow a DVD, Blue-Ray or HD-DVD from factory to consumer.

Players would then be able to check the RFID chip on the disc and refuse playback if a criteria was not met, meaning if it has been copied or someone wants to playback the dvd in the wrong region. Will this help in the fight against piracy ? Not likely, is it ? The range of the RFID chip makes it impossible to track the DVD down unless your tracking device is close. (it is short range communication).

The only thing that could be working is that new players receive data from the chip and refuse to play if the data is not correct. So, this story could be a test to see how consumers would react to such chips.

What the industry is doing is to tighten the grip on those people that they need most, the people who actually buy DVDs, Blue-Ray and HD-DVD discs. Every new restriction tightens the grip a little bit more resulting in the loss of customers.

When will they understand that they can’t win this game unless they start thinking about what the consumers want.

Blue-Ray vs. HD-DVD comparision

Do you know about the differences between Blue-Ray and HD-DVD ? I mean, the real differences, not the technical mumbo jumbo that has no meaning in real life. With the releases of Training Day, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Rumor has it on Blue-Ray and HD-DVd the guys at High Def Digest were able to compare the two formats directly. All three reviews analyze the video and audio quality, the depth of supplemental content, the overall ease of use and menu navigation.

One would think that the video and audio quality would be close to each other and that differences could only be seen in navigation and supplemental content. Apparently this is not the case: The video quality of the HD-DVD versions of all three movies is superior to the Blue-Ray disks. The Blue-Ray disks miss the Dolby Digital-Plus tracks which are provided in the HD-DVD disks as well. The tester also criticized the disk navigation on two of three Blue-Ray disks.

Training Day:

In our first head-to-head comparison, we found the HD DVD to be superior. The unfortunate cropping of the Blue-ray image, coupled with more noticeable compression artifacts and an overall darker cast, can’t compete with the more consistently pleasing presentation of the HD DVD. Also a strike against the Blue-ray version is that both the Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital-Plus soundtracks have been dropped in favor of plain old Dolby Digital, and even the disc’s menu navigation is more clunky and with less interactive functionality. Certainly, this Blu-ray release delivers fine video quality in its own right, but the format’s backers will need to step it up if they are going to win the hearts and minds of early adopters over HD DVD.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang:

With our second Blue-ray versus HD DVD battle on ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,’ we again declare victory (although by a smaller margin) to the HD DVD version. Most of the same problems we found with ‘Training Day’ on Blue-ray — namely the picture cropping (though it is likely a player issue) and darker cast — reappear again here. The absence of HD DVD’s Dolby Digital-Plus tracks on Blue-ray is problematic, and I still find Blu-ray’s clunky menu navigation quite irritating. Though with ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ Blue-ray has proven it can deliver moments of stunning high-def as good as HD DVD, it is still not delivering that level of quality as consistently. Very close with this one, but still no cigar.

Rumor has it..

I must say, our first Blue-ray versus HD DVD comparisons continue to yield surprises. I wasn’t expecting to see much difference in video quality between the two formats with ‘Rumor Has It…’, yet the two discs did bear noticeable differences, with the HD DVD boasting better detail and a more film-like look. And Warner has again dropped the Dolby Digital-Plus option from the Blue-ray version. However, the Blue-ray is a good $5 cheaper than the pricey $39.95 list price the studio is charging for the HD DVD/DVD combo version, so at least Blue-ray has that going for it. But even with its higher list price, in this reviewers opinion, the HD DVD release delivers overall better bang for the buck.

Well well well. The industry tried their best to make the new competing high definition formats blue-ray and hd-dvd as secure as possible so that no one would be able to view them with insecure hardware or would be able to copy the movies. The files themselves are protected by AACS which stands for Advanced Access Content System. HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) makes sure that high definition playback is only available if the output device (television, monitor) is HDCP capable, if not the movie will be downsampled to 960×540p.

The german computer magazine CT apparently found a way to copy Blue-Ray and HD-DVD movies. The first movie players on Windows XP that are capable of running those protected movies allow the print screen key to work which saves a hd image of the current frame to the computer. Automating that screenshot function to take 24 / 25 / 30 was the logical next step.

The mag calculated that it would not be a problem for todays high end computers to save all images in real time. All that was left to do is join all images. The result ? A high definition movie of course.

The mag tested this exploit with Sonys first Blue-Ray Pc Vaio VGC-RC 204 and with Toshibas HD-DVD-Notebook Qosmio G30. Both were running a special OEM version of WinDVD.

Upcoming versions of WinDVD will most likely be patched.
