One of the main differences between Veoh and other video portals like Youtube is that Veoh is limiting the playback of some of the larger videos on their site to a five minute preview. Veoh asks its users to download the web player beta to view and download the full video. Many users do not like the idea of downloading an external application just for the sake of being able to watch a full length video clip on a video portal.

There is however another possibility that will suite many Veoh users. The Greasemonkey script “Adds a link to download original file for Veoh” makes it possible to download the video right of the Veoh portal without installing third party software to do the same. Once installed the Veoh page will contain a button named Get URL which will display the download link to the Veoh video next to it when pressed. That download link leads directly to the full version of the video on the Veoh servers.

It will download normally just like any other file in Firefox. It will most likely work in download managers as well but this has not been tested.

File sizes can be huge depending on the length of the video. Tests revealed file sizes for Veoh videos of more than 1.5 Gigabytes which might take a while to download considering that the downloads will not be with full speed usually. The average download speed was between 60 and 100 Kilobytes per file from the Veoh servers.

Greasemonkey No Scripts Installed

Browsing

Firefox

firefox add-ons

firefox tips

firefox-extensions

greasemonkey

greasemonkey script

no scripts installed

userscripts
<guid

Some users might suspect that they need to restart the browser or at least refresh the page before the new Greasemonkey script is shown as installed.

That is however no the case. One of the main principles of Greasemonkey is that the scripts are site specific. They might work on multiple sites but they are usually limited to less than ten sites in total.

Greasemonkey is displaying “No Scripts Installed” because the script has not been designed for the currently active website. To see that a script has been installed the user needs to visit a site it is compatible with.

<span

Most captchas on the Internet are either easily defeatable by bots (yes even those basic math equations can be solved automatically) or almost unreadable for the human eye (some Google captchas anyone?) that they may thwart of bots but also a great number of human users.

Megaupload is a file hosting service on the Internet that is displaying a captcha before the download link of a file will be shown on their website. The captcha is probably one of the easiest to recognize and fill out, pretty useless from the standpoint of defeating bots and annoying to users who download files from Megaupload regularly.

Megaupload auto-fill captcha is a Greasemonkey script for Mozille Firefox (and other compatible browsers) that will automatically fill out and send the captcha on Megaupload. This essentially means that the user does not have to enter the captcha nor click on a button to send it to the Megaupload server.

It practically feels as if there was not a captcha on Megaupload at all. A short explanation of Greasemonkey. Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension that can be installed just like any other extension in Firefox. Once the extension is installed it is possible to add so called userscripts to the web browser.

Those scripts are coded in JavaScript and change the behavior and look and feel of websites automatically.

Firefox Invert Colors Add-On

Browsing

Firefox

darken

firefox add-ons

firefox-extensions

greasemonkey

greasemonkey script

invert colors

mozilla-firefox
<guid

The first run after the installation of the add-on will come as a shock for many users as the option is turned on globally by default. This means that every website will display with inverted colors in Firefox.

That’s probably not something that the user wants to see. The problem here is that the developer of the extension added the means to disable the add-on for selected websites but not the other way round. This means that there is no option to turn the add-on off globally and only activate it for specific sites. It is only possible to turn it on globally and deactivate it for specific websites.

The developer should think about adding that possibility to his add-on to make it more useful for users who want to invert colors on just a few websites. An alternative for the add-on is the Darken script for Greasemonkey which can darken the background of specific websites.

Google Multi-Column View is a Greasemonkey script that can display Google search results in two or three different columns instead of the default display. Doing that can be extremely useful for users with widescreen monitors who want to use all of the screen estate when working with Google. A test on a 1920×1200 LCD monitor revealed that about 30 search engine entries can be displayed on the screen at once in three column mode which is three times as much as the ten results that are displayed by default.

The Greasemonkey script requires the Greasemonkey extension when using Firefox. Google Chrome users can read the Google Chrome Greasemonkey article for pointers on how to add the script to their browser while Opera users can head over to the Greasemonkey in Opera article to do the same.

The installation of the Greasemonkey script should not pose any problems. Firefox users do not have to restart the browser, the new script will automatically work in new tabs and after reloading existing ones.

<span
