This is especially true for pages with dozens or even hundreds of images on a single page.

The Google Chrome Oogle extension improves this essential part of the image search experience in multiple ways. When you click on an image in the search results you are still taken to the page the image was found on. Instead of having to scroll down until you locate it by yourself, this is now handled by the extension automatically.

It will automatically scroll to the location of the image on the page so that you can see it right away. To top it all off, it furthermore highlights the image with a border so that you can recognize it even if other images are displayed next to it on the page.

<img

The developer has stated however that there are pages where it does not work yet.

Chrome users can change the highlighting color from black to another color in the extension’s options.

Just enter another color into the “highlight image in page with a shadow in” form. You should see the new color immediately being applied to the border of the form.

The options furthermore allows you to switch between the new and old style of image results, and to enable Google’s lightbox which overlays the image you have been searching for on the page it has been posted on.

Oogle is a basic extension that can speed up the a user’s workflow considerably when searching for images on Google’s image search engine.

The ability to highlight and scroll to the image sets it apart from other solutions. Chrome users can download and install <a

While you could use a search engine for that, you could also try the browser extension Periscope of the news aggregation service News360. The extension basically works like related post links that you see on a lot of blogs and news type sites. Unlike the majority of those though that only link to other articles on the same site, the Periscope extension finds and displays related articles and news on other sites.

Periscope concentrates on mainstream online news portals and sites like BBC News, the Wallstreet Journal, the Guardian, Business Week or the Washington Post. This means that it is best suited for Internet users who regularly read news on at least one of those online news sites. If you favor independent sites, smaller newspapers or niche sites then you won’t find much use in the extension as it does not provide links to related news posts in this case. The available site pool exceeds 10,000 according to the developers.

After you have installed the extension in your favorite browser, or installed an app for your phone, you will see a news bar at the top of supported news portals that links to related articles.

The toolbar displays the news magazine or site name only, and not the actual title of the related article that you will find on that site. That’s an oversight as you may run into the same article or an unrelated article on another site.

You can however expand the toolbar to display additional news sources and images on the screen. It can take a few moments before the toolbar is displayed on a page. This should not be a big usability issue considering that most users will start reading the news on the original site first before they start being interested in additional coverage.

on the official website. Everyone else finds links to the mobile app versions of the application and the web based version there as well.

Photo Finder Finds Photos Based On Camera And Other Parameters

Browsing

Google Chrome

digital camera

google chrome

google chrome extension

google images

photos
<guid

Then you probably would like to see a few test photos taken with cameras that have made it on your list. Or maybe you own a camera and want to know what it is capable of. Whatever it is, the Chrome extension Photo Finder can help you find the answers you are looking for.

But Photo Finder could also aid users who are looking for specific photo types, for instance wide-angle or fisheye photos, or photos taken in a specific month or lightness.

Photo Finder processes Exif data that many digital cameras write automatically as meta data when photos are taken. The extension uses the vast archive of Google Images.

It adds an icon to Chrome’s address bar. A left-click on the icon displays a search form and menus to customize the photo search. It is not necessary to use the menus at all, which means that the extension can also be used as a quick way to search for photos on Google Images.

A digital camera manufacturer or model can be entered in the leftmost menu. You can for instance search for all photos taken with Canon cameras, or for photos that have been taken with Nikon’s D7000 digital camera. Once you start typing suggestions are made automatically by the extension.

The second and third menu are used to make changes to the camera’s zoom level and lightness. The fourth and final menu can be used to select a specific month for the photos. Want to find Statue of Liberty, Central Park or Golden Gate Bridge photos in Winter? Just select one of the Winter months and you are good to go.

The loading of the results page is not delayed by the selections. The selection may however have an impact on the quality of the results. Let me give you an example. If you select a camera that is not really that popular, you may up with unrelated or no photo results at all.

Photo Finder is nevertheless a handy extension for Chrome users. The extension can be downloaded and installed directly <a

In my particular situation for instance, I tend to get distracted by dog walkers or service cards outside of my apartment. Others may be distracted by co-workers chatting on the phone, a refrigerator, television or anything else that is distracting them from work. Heck, even a computer that is to loud can be very distracting during work.

White Noise can help improve concentration by covering up distracting noise. You basically play white noise in the background when you are working to get rid of distracting sounds in the surrounding.

Studies have shown that white noise can be effectively used to mask office noise.

The Google Chrome extension White Noise adds a white noise player to the web browser. The extension adds a single button to the Chrome browser interface. When you click on it you see the interface of the extension pop up.

Here you can turn on the white noise. When you do the sound starts playing immediately. White noise continues to play for as long as the browser window is open and the sound is not turned off again.

Some users may want to use the volume slider to change the level of volume. The default volume was for instance to loud for my liking, I had to turn it down to reach a level of comfort.

The automatically start when the computer turns on option is a bit misleading. This basically turns on white noise whenever you start the Chrome browser. The setting has probably been designed for Chromebooks where the web app could indeed be turned on when the computer starts.

Google Chrome users can install White Noise <a

Maybe it is basic tips that can really help you improve your workflow, for instance by searching websites directly from Chrome’s address bar instead of loading a search engine’s website first to do that, or more advanced tips that involve keyboard shortcuts.

Google recently released a first party extension for the Chrome browser with the purpose of providing Chrome users with tips to use the web browser more efficiently.

The extension will display tips when it recognizes ineffective behavior, for instance if a user uses only windows and no tabs to browser multiple websites.

The core question here is obviously if those users would be able to find and install the Chrome Tips extension, and the answer is probably no.

Regardless of that oversight in design, it can be handy if you do not mind running the extension in the background while working in the browser.

The extension will display tips in a small toolbar on top. The core issue that I have with the extension is that the tips are time and action based, which means that you may never see a tip coming up if you are an advanced user.

I tested the extension for a long time and did not see a single tip come up, hence the lack of a screenshot.

If you open the constants.js file of the extension you will see all tips listed in the interface. Here are a few examples of the tips listed:

Key for tip when user needs to be educated about switching between tabs.

Key for tip when the user needs to be educated about pinned tab feature.

Key for tip when user needs to be educated about browsing in private.

Key for tip when the user needs to be educated about search from omnibox.

The extension in its current state offers 13 different tips. That’s not a lot and explains why some users may never see tips displayed in the browser. I personally would have preferred a link somewhere in the browser user interface to a static page that lists all the tips.

The idea is interesting especially since the extension can display tips whenever it recognizes ineffective user behavior. Still, a lot more tips and the option to display them directly would be handy.

Chrome users can install Chrome Tips <a

Not sure for how long it has been there but it looks clean and really nice.

PlainClothes, Use Default Web Styles in Google Chrome

Browsing

Google Chrome

google chrome

google chrome extension

plainclothes

styles

user styles
<guid

While it is still possible to use a site that uses hard to read color sets, it is usually a lot easier to turn that color set into one that is more pleasing to the eye.

PlainClothes is a Google Chrome extension that will automatically override page styles on all pages that you visit in the browser. It uses a default color scheme that can be customized in the options.

By default, all pages will be displayed with a black text font on white background. The extension furthermore ensures that links will always be underlined, and that link colors use the standard blue and violet colors for unvisited and visited links.

You basically turn a page like this

into this

That’s the Yale Art page by the way.

You do not need to configure anything if you like the color schemes used by the extension. The extension displays its icon in the address bar. You can click on the icon to disable it for that page. The default website design will be displayed if the extension is deactivated.

A right-click on the icon and the selection of Options opens the preferences. Here you can make changes to the default design used when the extension is active.

It is possible to change the text, background, unvisited links and visited links colors separately, or make the following changes to the preferences.

You can allow websites to set text colors or use your system’s default colors instead of custom text and background colors.

It is furthermore possible to allow websites to set link colors instead of defining values for visited and unvisited links.

The extension displays examples right in the options which is handy to test if the selected color schemes are readable.

Two additional options are available in the PlainClothes preferences. You can disable the forced underlining of links and the use of default system fonts.

PlainClothes has been specifically designed for Internet users with impairments.

Chrome users can download PlainClothes <a

But that’s it. Sometimes you may want to find out more about a person on Gmail, for instance before you reply to an email. While you could do that by opening a web search engine in a new browser tab, it is not the most comfortable thing to do, especially so if you have to do it on a regular basis.

That’s where the Firefox (and Google Chrome and Safari) add-on Rapportive comes into play. Rapportive integrates into the Gmail interface naturally. The extension displays a new sidebar on the right side of any email that you open on the Google Mail website.

The sidebar displays the contact’s name and email address, location, a profile picture if available, the contact’s occupation, recent social media usage (Twitter) and options to connect on social networking sites like Facebook or LinkedIn. Another interesting feature added by Rapportive is a note taking module that is displayed in the sidebar. You can jot down notes which are displayed whenever an email of that contact is opened in the Gmail interface.

You see who you are communicating with, and have options to add the person to your social circles. This works best if Rapportive was able to find the user on one of the social networking sites it uses to display the contact information. This does mean that you won’t get any useful information, that is information that go beyond the user’s email address, if Rapportive cannot find or link the user on one of those sites.

Users can hover over any email address in Gmail, for instance in emails with multiple recipients, to see their information on the screen as well.

Rapportive does not need access to your Gmail’s login credentials. href="http://www.ghacks.net/2009/03/08/how-customers-can-benefit-from-a-global-economy/">computer games and media at the Amazon UK store and not the store in Germany. I benefit in two ways here: First, prices are a lot cheaper than they are in Germany. I sometimes pay 50% less for the same item. Second, I get games and media in their original language, and not the often weak German language synchronization.

Sometimes I encounter an item that I want to buy only to find out during checkout that I cannot. Amazon then displays one-liners like “We are not able to ship this item to your default shipping address”, “We’re sorry. This item can’t be shipped to your selected destination” or “The following items cannot be shipped to the addresses you selected”.

The free Firefox and Google Chrome extension “Does Amazon Ship to?” offers a solution. Amazon customers can use it to retrieve information if a specific product on the online shop’s website is shipping to a selected country.

The browser extension works with all localized Amazon stores, in particular with Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.fr and Amazon.de.

Once installed, the button appears on every Amazon product page. The button is added to the page after the page has been completely loaded. It may even take a second or two before it appears.

When you click on the button you see a country pulldown menu where you have to select the country you want the item to be shipped to.

Does Amazon Ship to will then retrieve the shipping information and display them in the program interface. All merchants, including third party merchants selling the item are displayed here with their asking price and, if available, shipping costs.

Basically, if you see a price and merchant you know that the item will be shipped to the selected country. If you do not see a merchant, you know it won’t.

Firefox users can download Does Amazon Ship to <a

To be honest, I have been spending more site on the site than I have on Facebook or Twitter combined. That’s still not much compared to social networking geeks who spend hours on those sites.

Still, I use it and have encountered posts on the site regularly that are in a language that I do not understand or barely understand. That’s a issue sometimes especially when posts look interesting. This can be the case if a screenshot is posted along with the post for instance.

Google has just released a Google Translate version for Google+ for the Chrome browser. The extension basically saves users from having to open a translation service such as Google Translate to translate the post into another language.

The extension adds a Translate link in the “+1 Comment Share” line on all posts on Google Plus.

Here are two screenshots that demonstrate the extension’s functionality on the Google Plus website.

It feels a bit strange that the Translate link is shown on every post on Google Plus, even if the post is written in the user’s native language. Then again, this is probably the resource friendly way of adding the functionality, as it would take some processing power to parse the page for foreign language posts.

Translations are instant without page reloads, which is the optimal solution for on-page translations. The extension displays translated text with a yellow background on the Google+ website. The color of the background can be changed in the extension options.

Chrome users can pick a different background with a click on one of the colors in the options or by entering the color code in the background for the translation field.

It is furthermore possible to deactivate the translate link by default, and add it only to the Google+ page when the extension button is clicked on. The button is automatically placed on the right side of the Google Chrome address bar.

And, there is obviously an option to select the language that you want the posts to be translated into.

Chrome users who happen to spend time on Google+ can download the Google Translate for Google+ extension <a

Well, that’s not entirely correct. What Google retired was the frontend of that service on the web. The definitions are still available, but can only be displayed in Google Search.

Users need to use the advanced search parameter define followed by the phrase that they need to look up in a dictionary to display the definition on the Google search results page. The search define dictionary for instance returns the following definition on the search results page.

Looking up definitions on Google directly is not the most comfortable of options, especially not so if you need to look them up regularly. The core usability issue here is that you need to switch between tabs in the browser whenever you want to look up a word. This breaks the workflow and increases the reading time considerably.

The Google Dictionary extension for the Google Chrome web browser adds on-page definition look-ups to the Chrome web browser, which terminates those usability issues.

It adds two different look-up modes to the web browser. A left-click on the extension icon in the Chrome address bar opens a small form that can be used to look-up phrases in the browser. Definitions are displayed directly in the same window that expands automatically.

That’s better than using Google Search to display word definitions, but still not as comfortable as the second option the extension offers.

Users can get direct definitions of words by double-clicking them on a website. A double-click on individual words displays their meaning directly in an overlay. Definitions of phrases are not available by default. Users need to go into the extension options to enable the “Display pop-up when I select a word or phrase” option which is triggered by holding down the CTRL key while highlighted words on a web page.

Foreign language words or phrases are automatically translated by the Chrome extension. Non-English speaking users can change the language in the extension options to get definitions in their language if supported by Google.

Google Chrome users can install the Google Dictionary extension <a

The Chrome extension lists direct links to sport broadcasts which can be viewed directly in the browser. That’s handy if your national TV is not broadcasting the match or event at all, if you are abroad and want to see your favorite team or if you are stuck in office with no access to a television.

Live Sport adds a football icon to the address bar. A click on the icon opens a menu after a few seconds with options to display live scores or live streams.

Live Streams are conveniently sorted by sport, with tabs available for football, tennis, hockey, basketball, baseball and Volleyball. It might feel a bit strange that American football is not on the list. The most likely reason is that it is sorted in the other category.

The other tab contains sports like Cricket, Rugby, Nascar table tennis or cycling among others.

A click on a category displays all matches for the particular time and day. Each match is listed with an icon that indicates the sport, the time it starts, the teams and a Video link. A click on a match row displays detailed information, including links to flash contents that stream the game live on the Internet. Some links may require registration before they become available, the majority do not.

A click on a link opens the live stream in a popup window or in a new browser tab in the Chrome web browser. It may take some time before the contents are displayed, and you will sometimes encounter errors like streams that do not exist anymore or cannot be loaded at that time.

The popular matches, especially football matches, usually offer multiple stream links so that it is easy to switch to another stream if one is not working correctly.

The stream quality ranges from barely viewable to excellent.

Live Scores are displayed for current, upcoming and finished games. There are options to view tables in leagues or tournaments, and to customize the selection to exclude sports or events from the display.

Live Score for Chrome makes it a lot easier to find live streams of sport matches and events. While it is possible to find those links on your own, it usually means lots of searching and testing before you find one that is working and streaming in good quality.

Chrome users can install Live Sport directly <a

But can it live up to that promise? When you look at the feature set you will notice that it combines several unique options with features that are common in other YouTube extensions as well.

Probably the most unique feature of them all is the option to control the video volume with the mouse wheel. An on screen display indicates the current volume whenever the mouse wheel is used while the mouse hovers over the video. The mouse wheel volume control is compatible with both Flash and HTML5 videos, and works directly on YouTube and third party sites.

You scroll down to with the mouse wheel to decrease the volume and up to increase it. The extension adds three new control button to the video page. You see them next to the share and flag buttons. The first button enables cinema mode which darkens all of the screen but the video. The second expands the window size to full screen for a better viewing experience, and the last opens the extension’s options.

Here it is possible to change the OSD type and color, or disable it completely. It is furthermore possible to enable the Auto HD mode which will play YouTube videos in HD automatically if available, to stop the auto play feature of videos on YouTube, to hid the player controls and to enable the auto replay feature.

The fact that the mouse cursor needs to be on top of the video is somewhat of an usability issue. This can be resolved by switching to full screen video mode, which unfortunately cannot be set to automatic.

Chrome users who want to try the Magic Actions for YouTube extension can install <a

I cannot figure out for instance how to sort all extensions based on their last update. Sure there is the new and noteworthy category but it is limited to a handful of extensions. Featured and popular as well do not provide access to the newest extensions. The all extensions button links to a list of all extensions of a certain category, but without sorting options.

There’s a web app for that is a new Google Chrome extension that may help in the discovery of new Chrome apps. While it does not provide access to web store sorting options, it suggests extensions and web apps based on past visits and current visits.

The extension displays a list of suggested web apps based on the history directly after installation.

<img

It is not clear how the resulting web app is selected. The extension seems to pick the first search result automatically. This may or may not match the user’s expectations.

Chrome users can open the page at anytime with a click on Wrench > Tools > Extensions and the Options link under the There’s a web app for that listing on the page.

Suggestions based on the past browsing history are fine, but what about suggestions for the active site in the browser? There’s a web app for that supports this as well. It automatically scans for extensions that match the active page. A blue plus icon next to the bookmark star in the address bar indicates that an extension has been found for the page.

JDownloader is one of the most popular programs to download files from file hosting services like Rapidshare, Megaupload or Filesonic. It offers several advantages over downloading files directly from the file host’s website. Among the advantages are a download queue, comfortable integration of premium accounts, link verifications and the option to unpack downloaded files right away on the local system.

The program can monitor the Windows Clipboard for file hosting links to automatically suggest them in its Linkgrabber module. While that’s handy for sending individual file links to the downloader, it turns out to be everything but comfortable if multiple links need to be added to JDownloader, especially if those links are not displayed fully on the website.

JDChrome is an extension for the Chrome browser that integrates JDownloader into the browser. The extension adds a JDChrome entry to the Chrome right-click context menu when links are selected.

The context menu offers two options:

Add to Queue – This adds all files on selected links directly to the download manager queue of JDownloader.

Add to Grabber – This adds the links to the Linkgrabber module where they are checked but not directly processed.

You can send single links or multiple links to JDownloader. For multiple links you need to highlight all links first before you can send them to the program. Why? Because every minute of down time can have an impact on the website’s revenue, third party impression of the services offered and a website’s search engine rankings.

But it is not only webmasters who have an interest in monitoring pages, domains and servers. Regular users sometimes may also be interested in website monitoring solutions, for instance to receive notifications if their favorite website is down, and when it is back up again.

Server Monitor for the Google Chrome web browser is a website monitoring solution for both situations.

The extension adds an icon to the Chrome address bar that offers several features. It first and foremost displays all monitored websites and their status when it is clicked on. The second feature is the ability to initiate manual update checks for every website, and to open the options page of the extension to add servers to the list of monitored properties, or edit or delete existing entries.

Icons in front of each website or server indicate the availability. Green indicates that the site responded with the expected content, yellow that the content was different, and red that the site failed to respond at all.

New servers and notification settings are configured in the extension’s options, which are accessible with a right-click on the address bar icon and the selection of Options.

The notification settings on top are all enabled by default. A popup notification is therefor displayed when the following events occur.

unexpected responses

connection errors

server or website is restored

Some or all of the notifications can be disabled in the options. Server Monitor runs automatic checks every minute by default with the possibility to change the interval.

New servers and websites are added in the lower half of the options page. Each site is identified by a unique name (that appears if the address bar icon is clicked) and a url.

No specific contents or responses are expected by default. A user can change that in the “This Response” field. I was not able to find out which responses are accepted by the extension, since the “UseCurrent response” link did return a blank page, and the extension’s description did not reveal details either.

Google Chrome users who would like to monitor websites or web pages can install the Chrome extension directly <a

No? You are not alone. Some users say that web apps are nothing more than links to websites, at least in this early stage of development. They can be more than that though, and developers who like to get started can take a closer look at Mozilla’s Open Web Apps documentation.

The first public record of a Mozilla apps store dates back to the year 2009, see Mozilla Considering App Store For Add-Ons for details.

Mozilla is now demoing their own web apps store that supports Firefox and the Google Chrome browser. The Open Web Apps for Firefox extension or Open Web Apps for Chrome extension needs to be installed before the web apps become available in the selected web browser.

The installation adds a single button to the browser. Firefox users can move the button around after selecting customize from View > Toolbars. A click on the button displays all installed web apps. A click on a web app opens the page in a new app tab in the browser. App tab? Little pinned favicons that are displayed in front of all standard tabs.

Apps are installed by hovering over their icon on the web apps demo page and selecting the install button. The installation confirmation dialog is different. Firefox users see a small installation window at the top of the browser,

Google Chrome users an overlay instead.

The demo pages offers 17 gaming related web apps at this point in time, but that’s fine since it is only used for demonstrative purposes. The web apps engine supports auto discovery of web applications. A user who has the web apps extension installed will be notified if a page offers an installable web application.

A click on the manage button in the web apps interface opens the list of installed applications with options to remove them again from the browser and to view their manifest. The page is also accessibly by entering about:apps into the Firefox address bar.

It would make sense to eventually integrate the list of installed open web apps in the Firefox add-ons manager.

Is it possible to install apps that are currently offered in the Google Chrome web apps store? No that does not seem to be possible.

Mozilla seems to have plans to integrate web apps support into a future version of Firefox so that the installation of the extension would no longer be needed to install and use web apps in the Firefox web browser. This could happen in firefox 6, according to the Mozilla Firefox development roadmap for 2011. Firefox 6 is expected to land in the third quarter of 2011. (<a

When other elements on the page the game is embedded on distract from the gaming experience? Or have you found a solution to increase the size of the flash content only to find out that it cannot be used to scale all games, or that it had a big impact on the performance of the Flash game and caused lags?

SwiffOut for the Google Chrome browser is an incredible extension, and I’m saying that after testing many different solutions to run flash games in full screen.

What makes it that incredible? For one, it introduces lag free fullscreen gaming to the Chrome browser. Fullscreen in this regard means that all browser UI elements, like the address bar or title bar, that are normally still displayed are not shown. Only the flash game is shown in full screen on the computer monitor.

That alone makes it superior to comparable solutions. SwiffOut determines the best possible resolution to run the game to improve performance in fullscreen mode. Even better, the Chrome extension works even if flash games do not support scaling.

So how does it work? Chrome users need to install the extension first. It places an icon in the Chrome address bar that switches to full screen mode when Flash contents are embedded on the active page. If no contents are discovered nothing happens. If a Flash element is discovered it will switch automatically to fullscreen mode.

Only the flash content is then displayed on the screen, everything else is hidden and not shown anymore. Take a look at the before and after screenshots of a Kongregate game.

This is a screenshot of the standard browser UI. All browser controls and elements on the page are visible.

This is a screenshot of the full computer desktop (note not the browser window!) after the Swiffout button has been activated. Only the flash game is visible on the screen.

I have tested the Chrome extension on several popular Flash gaming websites, including Armorgames, Kongregate and Addictinggames.

Most games could be played without difficulties, a few were blurry which was probably caused by the selected resolution. The games were still playable though.

The ESC key on the keyboard exits the fullscreen mode. The extension displays an intermediary page at this point with a back button to open the game page at the developer or gaming site again.

Another interesting feature of SwiffOut is the ability to create game shortcuts. These shortcuts are placed on the computer desktop.

A right-click opens the context menu with the option to save the shortcut to the desktop. This opens the save file dialog window. The shortcuts are placed as .lnk files on the computer which indicates that this will only work on Windows.

A double-click on a lnk file starts the flash game immediately in full screen mode which is very comfortable and unique as far as I know.

As a side note, I have tested the extension on popular video portals as well but it did not work with Flash video at all, at least not on portals like Youtube or Gametrailers.

Google Chrome users can install the latest version of the SwiffOut extension <a

If you like Google Maps you could visit the Google Maps website, enter the address or addresses and wait until everything has loaded to see the address on the map, or get the directions to reach that entered location.

Mini Google Maps for the Google Chrome browser improves that process dramatically. The extension adds a single button to the Chrome toolbar that opens a minimalistic Google Maps interface right on the same page.

The two core features of Google Maps, location look ups and directions are both accessible from within the interface.
Users who enter an address or location in the form at the top of the Mini Google Maps extension window are taken directly to that location in the window. The form acts as a standard text form which means that it supports copy and paste. It is therefor possible to copy an address from a website and paste it into the form.

The second option becomes available with a click on the Get Directions link in the window. The location input form changes into two address fields to display directions between these two locations in the world.

The directions are are then added to the Google Maps window in the Chrome browser.

Mini Google Maps furthermore offers to change the map view from map to terrain or satellite, set a default location and change the size of the Google Maps window.

The Google browser extension has been designed as a way to access Google Maps information faster. It lacks several Google Maps features, from adding multiple destinations over transit information to the my maps feature and export and printing options.

The developer has already announced plans to add some of the missing features, like traffic and weather, to the Google Chrome extension. Probably the biggest missing feature right now is the inability to send addresses on websites to the extension directly.

Google Chrome users can download and install Mini Google Maps from the Google Chrome Extensions website.

Update: The Mini Google Maps extension for the Chrome browser has been discontinued. An alternative is the Mini Maps extension which provides a similar functionality.

Google Chrome Spellbook, Better Bookmarklet Management

Browsing

Google Chrome

bookmarklets

google chrome

google chrome extension

spellbook
<guid

The term combines the two words bookmarks and applets. A bookmarklet is usually a JavaScript program that provides access to a specific function, for instance search or web page modifications.

Most users who make use of bookmarklets regularly place them in a location like the bookmark’s toolbar that’s easily accessible. Many like to place them in a single folder to save room and have them all at hand in the same location.

The Google Chrome extension Spellbook adds another management and accessibility option. It basically creates a special folder in the bookmarks that gets added to the right-click context menu of the web browser.

The main advantage? Users who hide the bookmarks toolbar, or have bookmarklets scattered around all over the bookmarks folder can now access all of them a lot easier.

Chrome users who are already making use of bookmarklets need to move them from their current location to the new folder. The Bookmarklets folder gets created by Spellbook on installation. It functions like any other bookmarks folder which means it is possible to drag and drop bookmarklets from web pages and other bookmarks into it. It is furthermore possible to create subfolders in the bookmarklets folder which may be handy for users with lots of bookmarklets.

A right-click on a web page and the selection of Spellbook opens the bookmarklets that are stored in the folder. A left-click executes the selected bookmarklet on the page.

Users who have never used bookmarklets before find a good selection at the Marklets website.

The Spellbook extension is available for direct installation <a

Facebook introduced a new photo view mode about a week ago. Among the complaints is that a right-click on a photo does not reveal options to copy its web address anymore which makes it that much harder to display images individually or save them to the local computer system.

Facebook Image Link is an extension for the Google Chrome web browser that adds new context menu options to the new Facebook photo viewer.

A right-click on a page where the new Facebook image viewer is displaying a photo displays a context menu with the following three options:

Open Image URL: If this option is selected the photo will be opened in a new tab in the browser. (the same is natively available when users Ctrl-click on an image)

Show Image URL: This displays an alert that reveals the web address of the photo. The url can be copied and pasted as usually.

Show High Res Image URL: This displays the same alert but for the high resolution version of the photo if available on Facebook. Some Facebook photos have high resolution versions that can be accessed this way.

Facebook Image Link offers interesting options for Facebook users who like the new photo viewer but miss features to copy photo urls and view photos in tabs.
