Long time Gmail users on the other hand were not able to use the email import option back then. Google today enabled the email and contact import feature for all Gmail accounts. Gmail users who want to import emails and contacts from other webmail and pop3 email services can do so by clicking on the Settings link in the top right corner of the Gmail interface after logging in.

This will open the general settings window. A click on the Accounts and Import tab will display an Import Mails and Contacts button. Pressing this button will initiate the process. Gmail will ask for the email address and password during configuration.

Users get to test tools in Gmail Labs all the time and new features are added regularly. One of the new features is the ability to import emails from other popular email providers such as Yahoo Mail, Windows Live or AOL but also POP3 accounts. There have been workarounds to accomplish that like the excellent gExodus email importer for the Windows operating system which allowed users to easily import mailboxes into Gmail. The new email import feature is not yet available for all Gmail accounts but will be added to all of them over time. New Gmail accounts on the other hand do have the email import feature enabled already.

Interested users find the email import option in the Gmail account settings. The second link is displaying as Accounts for users who have not had this new email import feature enabled and as Accounts and Import for those who have.

Gmail users have to provide account login data of the email service that they want to import into Gmail. Options that are provided allow the user to import emails and contacts, add a label to all imported mails and to enable email imports for the next 30 days.

Being able to import emails into Gmail is another feature of Gmail that is poised to become popular as soon as it is activated for most Gmail accounts.

There are three different kinds of email users these days; Those that work with desktop email clients, those that work with online email clients and those that use both email solutions. Moving from one email client to another is not always as easy as it sounds, especially when moving from a desktop email client to an online client or vice verse. The main problem that arises for most users is to find a way to move their existing emails to the new email provider to be able to access these emails there as well.

Single emails can be forwarded to the new email account but what about mailboxes with hundreds of mails? Enter gExodus, a standalone program for the Windows operating system that can import email mailboxes into Google Mail. The program supports the mbox format which is supported by many desktop email clients like Mozilla Thunderbird but not Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. The easiest solution for Outlook users is therefor to install Thunderbird and import the email first into this email client before importing them into Gmail. Another possibility is to use the DBX to MBOX converter, a command line utility that has been created for that purpose.

The email importer itself is a portable software program. The email address and mbox file have to be added to the program by the user. An option is to add a label to the import to make it distinguishable from the rest of the emails in the Gmail inbox. It might also be required to change the default Gmail mail server to another one. A click on MX lookup for Gmail will open a website that is listing several Gmail smtp servers.

Each email is imported individually by the software program afterwards. The process can take quite some time as it takes between 10-20 seconds to transfer one email to Gmail.
