I switched servers from my old dedicated server hoster Hetzner to Wiredtree back in July this year. There were several reasons for this step but especially the incredible offer that I was able to get, the managed support and the need for a faster server due to recent traffic increases. The deal got me an Intel Core i7 server with 12GB DDR3 and 4 Terabytes of bandwidth for $2315.8 in the first year and $2114.8 in the following years.

I researched the new web hoster extensively before making my decision to move the website to the new hoster. That is probably the most important step in the process to ensure that the hoster has excellent customer support, servers and connections to the Internet. Wiredtree was all that and more and I learned during the server transfer that their 15 minute reaction time to customer support requests was not just a figure that they picked out of thin air.

I had to deal with customer support in a few occasions especially during server migration to ensure that everything went underway smoothly. Wiredtree was always prompt to response with a solid solution that solved my requests. They also contacted me after three months to find out if everything was as I expected it to be. Support is therefor excellent, cannot be better in my opinion. But what about the server and hardware?

I ordered one server upgrade in that time; A backup server to store backups of all the websites and databases that were on the server regularly. The performance of the server itself is great and capable of running Ghacks and a few minor websites without problems. The load average, cpu, swap file, hard drive and memory utilization of the server were much lower than on the old server. More importantly than that is the fact that the server never crashed under the load so that I did not have to get up late at night after receiving a SMS that the server was down to fix the problem.

The Wiredtree server is not as cheap as it can get but it is still a cheaper priced server especially compared to other web hosting companies who charge double or even more of the amount that I’m paying for a comparable server. The excellent hardware and connections of the dedicated server in combination with top notch customer support make Wiredtree the hosting company that I recommend to all my friends and colleagues. It cannot get much better than that. We (that’s Everton from Connected Internet and I) are for example hosting Windows 7 News on another Wiredtree server and had no complaints (only praise) there with the hardware or customer support there as well.

I will do another review in 4 or 8 months to see if they are keeping their high standard. I currently have no reason to believe they do not.

Last year’s Christmas Giveaway was a very successful endeavor. We were able to hand out hundreds of commercial software programs to ghacks readers. Here is a short description of what happened last year for new Ghacks readers. We decided last year that it would be nice to use the marketing power of Ghacks to convince software companies to donate some of their software programs for a giveaway. We were able to close several deals with highly respected companies which resulted in one giveaway per day from December 1 to December 24. Ghacks readers could participate by simply leaving a comment in a Giveaway post which would entitle them for taking part in the drawing of the winners.

We want to continue the tradition this year but instead of just writing to software companies that we think might fit we would like to do it different this year. We are asking you to leave a comment with software that you would like to see in the giveaway. We will take your suggestions and contact the companies that produce these software program to see if they are willing to participate in the giveaway.

We cannot guarantee that the software companies that you mention will donate some of their products but we will do our best to convince them that it’s a win-win situation for all sides. Leave a comment below if you would like to see a software program or developer included.

I was approached by one of the companies that I work with (IDG) to publish a survey on my website. This survey is being used to create a Media Kit for Ghacks that will be used as a data source in advertising deals. This should mean a higher ad revenue for the site as the advertising companies have a better understanding of some general information about the website’s visitors (which would make me happy, haha)

They would like to analyze 100 surveys and I thought a good way to do this is to create a post asking for your help. The survey takes between 5 to 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. You do not have to provide an email address or your name in the survey. You might do it however as there will be a drawing in the end awarding one of the participants a $100 Visa gift certificate that is valid worldwide.

I would also like to add five Ghacks T-shirts to users who contribute in the survey. Just leave a comment telling me that you did and you enter in the drawing for those shirts. You can click the link below to be taken to the survey. I understand that some of you have strong objections against surveys. That’s totally legit as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this plea for help and thanks again if you have decided to participate in the survey.

It is not often that I go on holidays. This can be mainly attributed to the fact that my work and spare time balance was leaning towards lots of work and not so much spare time. This is going to change and it is starting tomorrow with a seven day trip to Jerusalem. I just want to let everyone know that I prepared some articles in advance and will probably find the time to update the website with a few articles each day as the hotel where I’m staying is providing free broadband Internet to their guests. I’m taking my new Acer laptop with me and I’m thinking of updating Ghacks in the evenings after visiting the interesting sights of the city during the day.

I just want everyone to know that in advance so that no one thinks I’m dead or decided to stop updating the website. The other authors will continue with their usual schedule. If you have any tips or ideas for the trip let me know. I already got some great advice from Dotan for which I will be forever grateful.

I will go on at least two additional trips this year and plan to do about six in the coming years to find some time to relax and see the places that I always wanted to visit. I’m off now packing my suitcase and doing some final preparations for my departure tomorrow morning.

Otakugadgets.com is a gadget blog that is run by Everton of Connected Internet and Martin of Ghacks. It is actually our second joint venture after the successful Windows 7 website that we run together as well. We thought that it would be a good idea to write a weekly recap of the Otakugadget posts here at Ghacks to increase the reach of the website (and add some link juice as well).

A new week recap will be published on each Monday from now on giving short but precise information about the posts (max of one per day) that have been published at Otakugadgets in the last seven days. On to the posts:

Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T: HD, Thin and Light with a Low Battery Life – Sony is one of those companies that give a lot of attention to the appearance and the details of their laptops. Apple of course leads the industry in this (read Jobs is) but Sony is a good second in the design aspect. From their Vaio series of high-end laptops comes the well-designed and good looking Sony Vaio VGN-NW125J/T.

5 Recent Voice Controlled Gadgets That Are Totally Cool! – Voice control is not what it used to be at one point. Back in the days when it was first introduced as part of mobile phones and other gadgets, it was still in its nascent stages. At that point, it was nothing more than a gimmick. This I can say from first-hand experience with older Nokia phones. The accuracy was nowhere near usable and well, it was not something you would want to rely upon.

Altec Lansing Expressionist Series Speakers: Double Barrel or Single Bass, Take Your Pick – A lot of people these days are making a permanent shift to laptops. There are various points as to why everyone is leaving their desktops but the main reason is the compactness and the portability. Laptops are fast becoming as powerful as desktops and hence it is easy to understand why people who wouldn’t make the switch earlier are doing it now. While laptops can match desktops spec to spec now, there’s usually one thing missing when people make the switch and that is audio.

Hewlett-Packard Pavilion dv4-1465dx: Runs longer and heavier – The Hewlett-Packard Pavilion dv4-1465dx is another laptop that is focused on being a great 14-inch laptop for students. As you might already know, students demand specific things from their laptops and the recent run of student friendly laptops try to conform to those demands. This particular portable has the advantage of a really long battery life. It has a huge battery that is likely to last you all day and for real.

Dell Studio S1440-022B: If you want budget and slim minus an optical drive, this is it – The Dell Studio S1440-022B is targeted at school students who are looking for a budget laptop. This new offering from Dell does something quite bold and does away with the optical drive altogether. As a result, the laptop becomes much slimmer and weighs less as well.

RIM (Research In Motion) BlackBerry Curve 8520: A Cheaper Curve – The new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is the model that comes after the Curve 8900. It is a lot like the 8900 with some of the features missing. Physically the design of the Curve 8520 looks a lot like the Curve 8900 but the former has enough new features that set it apart.

8 Eco-Friendly ways of turning your gadgets green – I have recently been noticing a lot of new Eco-gadgets (or green gadgets if you will) in the market. A year or two back, these genuine eco-friendly products were barely practical let alone cool. But all that has changed. They are now looking pretty sleek and you can actually use them if you can get them. They aren’t always available and they are not available everywhere. If you do get them rest assured that that they are pretty cool and very practical.

Let us know if you have any tips or requests. We would love to hear them.

I will be moving Ghacks to the new web server today which means that you might experience all kinds of problems with the site including disconnects, display errors, script errors or lack of updates because you are still being redirected to the old web server after the change to the DNS. The new managed server has many benefits over the old one but the main reason for making the switch was that the hardware of the unmanaged dedicated server was not able to keep up with the traffic at peak times.

That’s highly problematic and reduced the experience of many visitors that discovered the site for the first time. Ghacks will be up and running on the new server in less than eight hours if everything works out as planned. You will then be able to enjoy a better connection to the web server that will serve the website faster to your local computer system. It can take between 24-48 hours before all DNS servers have propagated the changes and are routing users to the new server and not the old one.

The worst case scenario is that something goes terribly wrong during migration which could mean a short, medium or long outage or even a transfer back to the old dedicated server for the time being until the problems have been sorted out.

There will be no more posts until the migration is completed. Comments that are posted today might not be taken over to the new website as well. If you want to contact me use the contact form on the top. Thanks for your patience and lets hope for the best!

Ghacks has been running on the same server for more than a year now. The server it is running on is provided by German company Hetzner who offer a fantastic deal for the money (€49 for a 4 Gigabyte server with everything that is needed to run websites that have a lot of traffic). A recent traffic increase (god knows where that came from) has slowed down the website a bit and I finally made the decision to hunt for a new dedicated server that would add the extra bang for the buck.

A lot of research should go into such a decision and that’s what I did. One tip that I would like to pass on is to take a look at the dedicated server forum over at Webhostingtalk. Web hosting companies post special offers in that forum that will give you benefits such as double bandwidth, server memory or discounts on the price.

My business partner and I moved our Windows 7 website recently from a hosting company in the UK to Wiredtree in the US using one of the discounts found in the forum to get a great managed server for a good price and absolute reliable and fast support.

I decided to do the same and order a managed server at Wiredtree. Here is what I got for the yearly price of $2315.8 (second year will be $199 less due to setup costs which would reduce the price of the server by $25 per month for its lifetime which means it pays of after eight months). I got a deal with double server memory, bandwidth and a discount of $70.

Intel Core i7
12GB DDR3
Primary Disk:250GB 7.2k RPM SATAII 16MB Cache

Plan is to add another server with a faster hard drive (raid I suppose) that will run the database eventually. The server is currently setup by the Wiredtree support team who will also handle the migration of the website. It could mean some downtime in the next days but the website will definitely benefit from the new server with speed improvements.

You might know that Ghacks is not the only website that I run. I have for example a very successful Windows 7 website that I operate with Everton from Connected Internet. The project is that successful that we have decided to create another website as a joint venture. Otaku Gadgets, a gadgets and hardware site, was created shortly after we decided to create another project. We hired two permanent writers and will also contribute regularly to the site.

We figured that a gadget and hardware website would fit perfectly in our portfolio, as we love to write about things that we love and are passionate about. Hah, that sounds a little bit stupid. Still, if you want to keep the motivation to write for a website after a month or year you need to be passionate about the niche. Or, you need to be one of those professional writers who can write about everything without problems.

Otaku Gadgets is on the other hand an experiment as we never operated a blog where the contributions were mostly coming from writers that we hired. We made sure to hire professional writers who are also passionate about the things that they write about.

The design of the site and pretty much everything is temporary for now. We have the intention to change to a custom design in the future but this will be fine for now. I would be very happy if you would pay a visit to the site. You can subscribe to the RSS feed if you like and I encourage you to voice your opinion on the site. Is there something that you love, like, do not like, hate? Keep in mind that it is a work in progress.

It is funny how some things turn out. I met Everton back in 2005 when we created our first websites and we have become good friends over time. It is very likely that this is not the our last project.

What better way to test a new or improved search engine than to be stuck with it for a full week without being able to fall back to other search engines. Bing is the new Microsoft search engine and we would like to invite each and everyone of you to test the ins and outs of the new search engine by forcing yourself to use it. We have created a set of rules in case you want to join the experiment so that you know what you are allowed to do and what not (not that we are going to punish you if you perform the occasional search using another search engine).

Bing Experiment Rules:

Use Bing exclusively for all of your searches for the next seven days

Write down what went well and what did not

Let us know your overall experience and rating of the search engine after the week

You may perform the exact same search in another search engine to compare results

You may also perform the exact same search in another search engine if Bing does not provide the results that you expect

You may use other search engines to look at search engine rankings

Now that we have established the rules of the experiment we would like to offer participants an incentive to take part. We are going to give away five Ghacks t-shirts to five random participants providing that we get that many users participating.

We would like to hear about your thoughts and experience with Bing. If you have anything to say let us hear about it. Check out Install Bing Search In Selected Web Browsers and our initial short review of Microsoft Bing.

We have started Appnews, a software update service, about a week ago and Rarst was so nice to compile a few stats after the first seven days of service. If you have not heard about Appnews before you might want to check out the introductory posts at Ghacks, Rarst and Freeware Genius to get an idea of what it is about. It is basically a service that keeps track of software updates. The software is limited to programs that have been reviewed on at least one of the blogs and links to those reviews are included.

One could say it’s an software update tracker that tracks all the good free software of this world. The first week saw a nice start of the service although there has not been much coverage besides the initial three blog posts linked above. The RSS feed subscriber count is scratching at 1000 subscribers. The 50 Twitter followers would bring the total count above the 1k mark which is great for such a young service.

I have added the RSS feed to the sidebar here at Ghacks which will from now on display the five latest software updates that directly link to the software developer sites. If you have not already subscribed to the Appnews feed I suggest you do so as it will keep you up to date with software developments of great programs that have been covered at our sites.

We are still collecting ideas on how to proceed from here. Some suggestions are offering a widget for websites to include, a directory of programs that are monitored and the inclusion of additional websites that provide the same expertise and quality in their free software reviews.

You might have already noticed that the Wordpress theme has been changed here at Ghacks to a more minimalistic theme. I think the new theme combines an excellent design with good readability. The theme will be tested in the coming days to see if problems of any kind are experienced while displaying the new Wordpress theme. This includes both factors that are experienced by the visitors of the website but also other factors like linking structure and monetization.

We would like to ask you to comment on the new theme and especially notify us if you encounter problems of any kind including page load errors, display errors and any other kind of error that is dampening your user experience. And we would of course like to listen to your opinion about the new theme.

I think it is interesting to provide some general statistical information about the site and its visitors every now and then. Some users might just skip reading the post while others will probably find it an interesting read. The post takes the data from traffic analysis software scripts like Google Analytics and Awstats.

Lets begin with some basic information about browsers and operating system. More than 50% of all Ghacks visitors are using the Firefox web browser followed by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer with 35%, Google Chrome with 4%, Safari with 4% and Opera with close to 4%. The situation is different operating system wise. Roughly 90% of all users that come to Ghacks use a Windows operating system, hence the major concentration on that operating system. Apple Macintosh users make up almost 6% of all visits while Linux users are close to 3.5%.

If you look at some of the more technical statistics available you notice more diversity in the numbers. While 1024×768 is still the major screen resolution with almost 24%, 1280×800 with almost 20%, 1280×1024 with 16%, 1680×1050 and 1440×900 with 10% each are all above the 10% value and worth considering. There are still about 2% of all users that access with a screen resolution of 800×600.

And yes, there are some pretty strange resolutions out there like 2048×768, 3840×1024, 832×624, 1050×1400 or 1296×1304.

Where are all the visitors coming from? A majority of 40% comes from the United States followed by the United Kingdom with almost 9%, Canada with 5%, India and Australia with 3% and Germany with almost 3%.

The majority of users has a broadband connection at his disposal although there is a large 30% unknown factor in the stats. DSL, Cable and T1 users make up almost 60% of all connections to Ghacks while dialups are at about 2%.

That sums it up for now. Any other information that you would like to take a look at? Let me know and I might share it with everyone.

Two days ago I asked if I should move some of the more advanced content to another blog. The result currently stands at 47% no voters to 41% yes voters with 12% saying they do not care. This reflects why the decision is that hard to make and why it takes so long to come to a decision. I’m currently feeling that a compromise in form of a blog redesign would please most Ghacks users.

The design should lay more emphasize on the various categories and provide RSS feeds for single categories or tags so that users could pick what they want to read. Before I give the start signal for the redesign I would like to ask you about your opinion once again. Not so much if the site should be redesigned but about what you would like to see when the new design goes online. Just add anything that you might want to see. Please keep in mind that the ads have to be there as this is how I make my living.

So, let me know about colors, new features and functions, design choices, fonts and everything else that comes to your mind. I cannot promise that it is possible to add everything there is a very good chance that the popular suggestions will be added to the site.

This is also a nice idea to link to example designs of sites that you like so that we can take a look at them. Fire away!

Ghacks has seen some changes in the last two months with the addition of Jack and his Linux articles and Daniel’s web development series. A question that came up was if those two (or one of them) should be moved to a separate blog.

I still have not come to a decision and I thought it would probably be best to ask the ones that are affected by the decision (that would be you). Two blogs would make it easier to concentrate topics for a certain user base with the option to visit both if both types of content would be interesting to you.

The main question is whether the content should be separated and if that is the opinion of the majority which content should be moved to another blog.

My initial thoughts were to move the web development topics to a new blog and also some of the advanced Linux topics. The new blog would be some sort of uberGhacks for advanced users.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Please vote and let us know which content should be moved to a separate blog if you select Yes.

You already might have recognized that we have a new Linux writer here at Ghacks. Jack started writing in December and we thought it would be a good idea to create a monthly article compilation of his articles and make them available for download.

The compilation contains all Linux articles of the previous month including all images and links to the original articles. This explains the large size of roughly 8 Megabytes. The format of the compilation is doc which is readable in all operating systems.

Please let us know what you think of this idea. Feel free to download and share the file. You may upload it to your website if you give proper credits. Please do not link to the file directly but to this article instead.

This compilation contains the following articles:

•	Abiword: A Lean Word-processing Machine

We are considering making the compilations available in different formats (pdf for example). It might also be a nice idea to create a page here at Ghacks with links to all compilations and articles.

We have given away free licenses to popular commercial software programs in the last 24 days. It was not really clear how you would react to those articles and if a lot of you would participate. That cleared up pretty soon on the first day after the comment count reached the hundreds. From then on it was more or less clear that this was a great idea.

The main question is: How did you like it? We would like to hear your opinion to think about possible changes that we could make in next year’s giveaway. Maybe you would like to see more Linux or Mac programs in the mix, maybe hardware or something else that we did not think about. Whatever it is, let us know and we surely will do our best to please as many users as possible.

One element that worked out quite well was to ask you about the software that you would like to see in the Giveaway. We managed to convince most companies to donate some licenses of those programs and we intend to ask you again in next year what you would like to see.

Now it is your turn to let us know what you think about it. Oh, and merry Christmas to anyone.

Day 21 of the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway. Hope you all ordered your Returnil Premium license, if not you can do so until January 2. Today’s giveaway is Fast Picture Viewer Professional which has no registration limit meaning that everyone who wants it gets it if they download and register the software today.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional was primarily designed for photographers, designer and editors to aid them in their daily work but its core functionality makes it interesting for most computer owners as well. As the name suggests the application is a fast picture viewer with a low memory footprint. Here is but one example for that.

A 2.17 Megabyte jpg image that is loaded into Fast Picture Viewer uses 9.6 Megabytes of computer memory and 12.6 Megabytes of virtual memory. The very same image makes XNView use 48.5 Megabytes of computer memory and 44.6 Megabytes of virtual memory.

The image file formats compatibility page lists the file formats that are currently supported by Fast Picture Viewer. It does make use of the Windows Imaging Component to ensure maximum file format compatibility.

There are a few basic groups that Fast Picture Viewer aims at:

Professional Photographers

Full Color Management with Profiled Monitor Support

Plug and Play Tethered Shooting

Adobe XMP Rating, Microsoft Photo Rating

Histogram and EXIF Info

Color-Managed Raw Preview

Sort on Date or GPS Time

Watched Folder Mode

Imaging Professionals

Unmatched Speed

Browse 100,000’s

Large Images Support

Saved Bookmarks

Multipage MTIFF Support

Custom Monitor Profiles

One Key Accept/Reject/Copy

Deep Subfolder Browsing

And of course the home user who wants a fast reliable image viewer for the images on his computer.

The program’s options contain several features that have to be enabled before they can be used. This includes one-key rating of images, single-keystroke labeling, multi-core support or how file operations like copying or moving are handled.

You will discover interesting and useful new functions all the time at the beginning. A click on the image count of the folder in the lower right corner will for instance display a slider that can be used to jump directly to another image with just two clicks of the mouse button.

Another example is the folder tracking feature which automatically scans selected folders – and subfolders – for new images displaying them as soon as they become available.

Fast Picture Viewer Professional is one of the fastest image viewers out there. Combined with its low memory footprint and professional features it is currently one of the best image viewers that is available for the Windows platform.

To get your copy head straight over to the download section and download the software. Then register the software with the following information. (Make sure to put the key in one line)

username: gHacks.net

key: LPmFPNAcSb4If92TCNGny9qrqLjGfRhz1=qf4C9F4qF=fiW+9SQP10zW9TJpewmPgzTKs8kYNEXb8lAly3fG

The key can be used to register the software so that it becomes the Pro version. This is working from Sunday 10:00 UTC to Monday 10:00 UTC.

So hurry up and let the software developer know what you think of his software.

Hello gHacks faithful. My name is Jack Wallen and I am here to give you the gift of Linux. Appropos seeing as how it’s the holiday season. Let me explain…I have been brought on board gHacks to write about Linux. Why? Because Linux is the future of computing…or at least that is what my soapbox has painted (in shiny gold leaf) across all sides.

Seriously though…

I have been writing about Linux for over ten years. I have had published thousands of articles covering Linux and open source. My plans here at gHacks will begin with helping the new Linux user (or the Windows user wanting to switch) easily migrate from Windows to Linux. As I tackle this cause I will sprinkle into the mixture some more advanced topics to keep those accustomed to Linux interested. I will introduce you to software you never knew about, desktops that will wow you, and the open source ideology that has been my war cry for over a decade.

I hope you will enjoy my articles here at gHacks. If you have any suggestions (or requests) please feel free to drop me a line via email.
