Three Great Freeware Games

I do stumble upon great fanmade games from time to time and write down a note about those games to remember it and write an article like this one you are currently reading. I discovered three nice freeware games that are worth taking a closer look, their names are: Turrican 4 Funeral, Wings of Fury and Warzone 2100 Resurrection.

Do you remember the game Turrican which was famous on the Commodore C-64 and Amiga ? Turrican 4 Funeral looks a lot like a copy of those old Amiga games. You walk, jump and shoot your way in this side scrolling action jump and run game.

Wings of Fury was another game that was rather famous on the Commodore Amiga. You represent an American pilot during in the Pacific during World War II. Your mission is to destroy enemy land and sea units by using various means such as bombs, torpedos and the machine gun.

Finally we have got Warzone 2100 Resurrection which is based on the Warzone game published by Eidos in 1999. Eidos decided to release the under the GPL in 2004 and the Warzone Resurrection project decided to work further on the game. This game is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Kings Quest III Remake Released

I love remakes, especially when they are fan made and not a companys effort to make easy money with a well known franchise. I never played the original Kings Quest series (was more into Leisure Suit Larry at that time) but enjoyed the remakes that have been released so far. If you did not know, there are also remakes of Kings Quest 1 and Kings Quest 2 availabe at the website of ADG Interactive. (free of course)

I can´t say much about the story, the following excerpt was taken from wikipedia:

In King’s Quest III, the story moves away from Daventry and King Graham to the land of Llewdor, where a boy named Gwydion is being kept by the wicked magician Manannan. Gwydion was kidnapped from Daventry by the magician when he was young, and this adventure tells the story of his journey back to Daventry.

Gnome posted a nice list of freeware games over at his lair and I suggest you pay his site a visit if you are looking for new games. Some have been mentioned already in similar toplists but some are new or at least unknown to me. It looks like 20 hand picked games and reference links to more sources for additional games.

Take a look if you are into games, it´s worth it. As is his whole site.

101 freeware games

1up.com released a list of 101 great freeware games all sorted in categories like Arcade, Strategy and Shooters. Every game has a short description about its content and a link to the homepage of the producers. Everything is free to download and play of course, you will need a full priced game like halflife 2 for some mods.

I found some jewels that I did not know about and that I think are worth mentioning and trying out. Rumble Box looks unique. Beat objects that are located in a box, every time an object is defeated it stays right there and raises the ground level a little bit. You will have to defeat as many objects that it needs to get out of the box.

Another game that looks really promising is Blitz 1941 a tank massively multiplayer online game. Looks pretty unique and fun to me, takes some time to download the client. You can chose to play the Russian or the German site and use their tanks depending on your level and some other factors. All tanks look historical correct, you can play for instance in a Jadgpanther or Tiger 1 for the German site.
