The developers have raised the bar considerable in the latest version; The number of supported video hosting sites has been raised from less than 50 to more than ten thousand.

The new version comes with additional enhancements like the ability to stop downloads and resume interrupted video downloads or a searchable and sortable download history. Users need to pay attention to the installation of the program as it tries to install a toolbar that replaces search and homepage of supported web browsers. It is however easy to block this from happening during the installation process.

Freemake Video Downloader can install plugins into Firefox and Google Chrome that add buttons to the browser interface. These act as a direct send to buttons to download movies and videos that are currently playing in the active browser window. The plugins are optional though, the program can also be used directly by pasting urls into the program interface.

The video downloader displays either a download dialog to the user or, if one click downloads have been selected, starts the download of the video right away. It is possible to specify some parameters in this case, like the preferred video quality or download directory.

Users who want more control can keep the default settings which displays a video download window whenever a video is about to be downloaded. Here it is then possible to select a video quality – if multiple video qualities are provided by the site and if it is supported by the software, the action (download video, rip music) and save directory. The following screenshot is an example of how the download window looks when a YouTube video has been selected for download.

It is not necessary to use the browser add-ons to download videos. You can alternatively copy and paste video urls directly into the application to download those videos. Another interesting option is the ability to add account information to the video downloader. Supported right now are YouTube, Facebook, Vkontakte, Nicovideo, Yandex and Mail.ru at the moment.

The application is a comfortable video downloader for Windows. Is there anything missing? Well, an option to add multiple videos would have been nice. And Firefox users may wonder why they cannot move the download icon in the browser. You can still read my old review of the application for further information.

Windows users can download the latest version of Freemake Video Downloader from the developer site. It is compatible with all recent 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system.

Youtube Movies sports hundreds of films sorted in categories like Action & Adventure, Comedy, Bollywood or Horror.

Free movie offerings are often associated with mediocre content, and while Youtube Movies does have its share of that it sports a few that at least some watchers will enjoy.

Action fans find lots of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies for instance, which are watchable. As are some of the animations like Animal Farm or Alice in Wonderland. Still, the majority of movies can probably be put into the B-movies category at this point.

Not all movies on display on the frontpage are available from users from all countries. That’s a bit unfortunate, as the dreaded “this video is not available in your country” message may appear after clicking on a movie on the movies overview page.

Even more surprising is the explicit nature of some movies. The movie Naked Run for instance contains strong language, graphic nudity and explicit sexual situations, and requires therefor a sign in before it can be viewed.

Most films offered in the movie section are free to watch. Some show up as rentals on the other hand, which suggests that the long term goal is a movie platform that combines free to watch movies with movie rentals.

Users who want to check out Youtube Movies can do so at the homepage of the service.

The movies are divided into six categories: Movies, Cartoons, Documentaries, Newsreels, Commercials and Short Films. Most films are black and white movies from 1930-1950.

Among the movies are some classics like Meet John Doe with Gary Cooper or West of the Divide with John Wayne.

The cartoons are from the same timeperiod but mainly in color, you can watch Popeye and Caspar ones for example.

I surely recommend this site for people who like films from this time period and also to people who maybe have not had much contact with it. Try it out, its worth your time ;)

Update: Watch Films is no longer available. The majority of sites that you find promise online movies are of questionable nature. You can check YouTube’s Movies category for some older or specialized movies that you can watch online.

It is rather interesting that most movies are viewable by users from all over the world. The movies offered on the movies page are however all in English, which could be a issue for some users. The movies page offers classic movies, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Young in Heart or Boot Hill with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.

Another great resource is The community video archive over at Archive.org that links to “open source” movies. Movies are available in language collections, with the English community movies collection the biggest by far. Not everything listed here is a movie on the other hand, which feels strange. If you dig deep enough, you will find some great documentaries and movies listed here as well.

The third and last resource is Wikipedia’s list of Open Source film. Listed are a good dozen movies with links to a web page where the movie can be watched or downloaded.
