Changing the wallpaper of the computer is usually only possible if the image is stored locally. Microsoft has added a native option to use photo RSS feeds as sources for background images.

Another popular choice are wallpaper rotators that change images regularly. These images are either taken from a local pool of images or from an online source.

Flickr Wallpaper Rotator, as the name suggests, uses Flickr’s photo library as the resource.

Wallpapers are either found through the use of tags or by specifying a Flickr user. The wallpaper rotator supports multiple tags and offers to sort them by factors such as relevance or data of publication. Photos can also be selected from a particular user only.

Wallpapers are rotated every six hours by default and stretched if their resolution is smaller than the desktop resolution.

The wallpaper rotation is flexible, allowing users to design the rotation interval from mere seconds to months. Wallpapers can also be tiled or centered.

Desktop wallpapers are rotated in the selected interval. Users can use the get new wallpaper option to manually get a new wallpaper that is then used as the background image until the next image is downloaded automatically by the application.

Flickr Wallpaper Rotator needs to run in the background for the wallpaper changing. An Internet connection is required as well to download the wallpapers from Flickr. It is theoretically possible to kill the application after it has changed the wallpaper as the new wallpaper will remain even after the application has been closed.

The developer should consider adding an option to exit the application after changing the wallpaper. The Windows Task Scheduler seems to be the best option for users who want to automate that process right now.

Flickr Wallpaper Rotator requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. It is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows operating system. The program needs elevated rights at least on Windows 7. A download is available at the Fleace, which stands for Flickr-Enabled Automatic Changer for Everyone, is an interesting wallpaper changer that uses Flickr as the main source for wallpapers. The system works straightforward. The user enters a few tags into the application or keeps the default tags (beach and puppy), changes a few options like the size of the source that should be downloaded, the countdown timer of the preview window or if a image that does not fit on the whole screen should be centered or stretched.

He can then change the wallpaper immediately by pressing the corresponding button. This button will open a smaller preview window that is displaying a thumbnail image of a random image that got pulled from Flickr. The image was tagged with at least one tag that have been set in the application itself.

A click on the Change button loads another image. This can be repeated until a suitable image has been found. There is no immediate acceptance button. The user has to wait until the countdown reaches zero which will automatically have the effect that the full image will be downloaded from Flickr and set as the system’s wallpaper.

<span

This will have the effect that Fleace will be autostarted and display its window so that the user can pick a new wallpaper. If he sets the countdown timer to 0 the whole process of selecting and setting a new wallpaper from Flickr will be invisible to the user. The application will terminate after changing the wallpaper on the computer system.

Fleace is compatible with all Windows operating systems beginning with Windows 95 including Windows XP and Windows Vista.
