Flickr is probably the most popular photo hosting and sharing on the Internet with thousands of new photos posted to the site every minute. It is great for discovering photos and locations in the world, meeting people and sharing experiences. One thing that many users do not know is that it is also possible to identify the digital camera a photo was taken with on Flickr.

All that needs to be done is to open a photo on the Flickr website. You notice the information that are posted on the same page like comments by other Flickr users or groups the photo has been added to. If you scroll down the page you will eventually come to a section called Additional Information in the right sidebar of the website.

This section contains information about the location and date the photo was taken, the number of views and the digital camera. The Taken With A [digital camera model] row will provide the information for registered users and guests alike. This seems actually like a very good way of researching a digital camera before purchasing it. If you got a few models that you would like to compare you can go to Flickr and check out the Camera Finder section of the site.

This section lists the most popular cameras used by Flickr users and provides information about many other digital cameras and brands as well.

A Flickr user can decided to protect the photos that he uploads to Flickr which has the effect that the a user who is trying to download a protected photo will end up with a gif called spaceball.gif instead of the real image. I’ve already shown how it is possible to avoid saving spaceball.gif images at Flickr. The method made use of the fact that the real location of the photo is referenced in the source code.

It’s not everyone’s favorite to crawl through source codes and I would like to introduce an easier way to achieve the same effect. I only tested it with Firefox 2 and Firefox 3, can’t really comment about the other browsers.

All you need to do is make use of the Page Info menu that can be accessed by right-clicking on the page with the image. Page Info has a media tab that lists all media files on that page including, yes you guessed that one right, the image that is being displayed on that page.

All that’s left to be done is to find the correct image and click on the Save As button. Now, before someone (again) comes along and tells me that this is stealing I would like to inform him that the image gets downloaded automatically by the browser cache as well and that it therefor already exists on the computer.

If users want to protect their Flickr photos they should either make them private, stop uploading them at all or upload them in a resolution that they are comfortable with that it gets downloaded.

Flickr Metadata Synchr provides an easy way to keep the metadata of local images and the images that have been uploaded to Flickr in sync. The software can check if a local version of the image is existing and if it is not existing download it from Flickr to have a local copy of every image that has been uploaded to Flickr on the computer.

Flickr is using several metadata information like the image title, description, tags, author and gps location. All of these parameters can be synced with the tool. The process is always the same. The software extracts the metadata from Flickr and from the XMP and IPTC sections of locally stored images. Pictures are then matched into pairs by using filename, title and date / time information.

Pictures that do not exist locally can be downloaded from Flickr. The metadata is merged from both sides. Blank fields will be synchronized with metadata from a side that has information about that field. If both the local and online copy of the image contain metadata for a specific field the last updated stamp will determine which information will be used for both images.

Tags can be configured to be merged completely which would essentially mean that all tags from both sides will be considered and added to both sides, that the newer tags will be used or that tags will be left unchanged.

Flickr Metadata Synchr comes with a simulation mode which simulates the changes but does not actually commit them which is great to test the waters.

Flickr users have the option to turn off the show “All Sizes” option when uploading photos to the popular image hoster. This can have the effect that the original size of the photo that has been uploaded to Flickr is not available for viewing and download.

The api on the other hand does not care about those restrictions and provides access to the original photo as well and that’s what the Get Flickr script over at Techroam is utilizing.

All the user needs to do is copy the Photo ID of the photo that he wants to view or download in full size from Flick and paste it into the Get Flickr script. The Photo ID is part of the url of every photo that is displayed on Flickr. It’s usually displayed after the flickr.com/photos/username/ part of the url.

The Get Flickr script computes the url of the original image and displays a link to it in the same window. The only way to prevent this from happening is if an uploader is marking his photos as private or if he converts them to the size that he wants them to show up before uploading the to Flickr.
