Not long ago the Firefox add-on website was relaunched and users were slightly disappointed that the Firefox themes websites was not changed at that time as well. There is however no reason to be disappointed anymore because the themes website received an update that makes it look and feel similar to the new Firefox add-on website.

Between 5 and 100 themes can be displayed on each page. Each Firefox theme is represented by a fairly large thumbnail, its ratings and name. The website provides several options to filter results either by one of the ten categories or by Date, Name, Downloads and Rating.

A click on a theme will load the theme’s page on the Firefox website that contains additional information about the theme like a description, user comments, support links and of course the download link.

The new interface is definitely an improvement over the old one making it much easier to get a quick overview of up to a hundred themes per page.

Initially I wanted to write about a new Firefox add-on that I discovered recently but since I failed to download the add-on from the new Firefox add-ons website I decided to write about this new website instead. The first thing that I did encounter when I tried to download the plugin was that I was forced to login to the website to download it. This is apparently necessary for all unsigned add-ons probably in an effort to protect inept users from harming their computers.

So I had to fill out a form, click on a link that was send to my email account and thought I was done and able to download the add-on. Funny thing happened, the add-on would not download. That’s my experience with the new Firefox add-ons website.

There are some other elements – or better missing elements – that are bothering me. They have removed the option to sort by newest / latest updated add-ons on the main page, that option is only available when you are already in a category and it will – of course – only sort all add-ons in that category accordingly.

Then there is the problem that a check is performed before you can install an add-on and if your version is incompatible it will not install. Users who like to test the latest beta and nightly builds have to expand the advanced details and click on complete version history to avoid those checks.

The only positive I can say about this new design is that it looks nice and clean; But I prefer fast and accessible over that anytime.

Besides that: what cool looking themes could possibly be available for Firefox anyway ?

With some time at hand I decided to explore the depths of all themes published for Firefox at the Mozilla website and try the ones that would appeal to me. But first, I had to find a way to enable those new themes which is not as trivial as it sounds.

Firefox themes can be enabled in the same menu that is used to enable and disable extensions. Click on Tools > Add-ons to go there and select Themes from the tab menu there. Firefox has to be restarted every time a new theme is activated.
