Firefox behaved strangely this morning, it simply would not load properly but hang in the interface. The tabs of the websites that were open in the last session were showing up but they were not loading at all. Killing the Firefox process and restarting the PC did not help.

Since this is not the first time Firefox acted up I started to troubleshoot the issue by disabling all add-ons to see if an add-on was the culprit. Firefox ran fine with no add-ons running in the background. I then enabled one add-on at a time to see which one was causing the hangs.

I found out that the password manager add-on Last Pass was the problem. I then remembered that I had the same problem about a month ago (see Fix Firefox With Last Pass Not Responding), and checked the Last Pass forums for news on the topic.

Some users were reporting problems with Last Pass, most of them were running a 64-bit edition of Windows 7, just like I do.

The solution was simple. Download the non binary version of the Last Pass add-on, and drag and drop it into the Firefox interface to install it. You need to disable the Last Pass add-on first so that the web browser starts up normally.

I’m not sure what the problem is exactly but the Last Pass guys should consider fixing it, as it is an annoying experience to witness the freezes every time the add-on updates automatically in Firefox.

Firefox is already running, but is not responding

Browsing

Firefox

firefox add-ons

firefox hangs

firefox-extensions

mozilla

web browser
<guid

To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.” popped up quite frequently on a test system running the latest official version of Firefox 3 lately. The problem usually appeared after closing Firefox and trying to open the web browser anew at a later time.

There did not seem to be a pattern to it though. The only indicator was the Windows Task Manager and a Firefox process that was still running although the browser had been closed before. Waiting was no option either, the process did not close after waiting multiple times for 15-30 minutes.

The only option that helped was to kill the Firefox process which would free the resources and make it possible to restart Firefox. The problem with killing the process though is that it could damage important files that are needed to run Firefox. It could damage files in the profile folder like the bookmarks.

The Mozilla website lists a few possible causes that could be the root of the problem. The lists includes problematic extensions, Java applets or Internet security software. There is also an error description in the Firefox Knowledge Base about the Firefox is already running error message which gives a few additional pointers.

The problem is that non of the possible causes listed on the two pages were the cause for the error message on the test system. It is easy to test if extensions are the cause of the error by starting up Firefox in safe mode which will load Firefox without extensions. If the problem persists it is clear that extensions are not the source.

Anyone else ever got that problem and found a solution for it?
